A man accused of murdering his girlfriend showed no emotion when he opened the door to the apartment where her decomposing body lay and admitted to a police officer that he had killed her, a court has been told.

The body of 48-year-old Thai sex worker Nuttidar Vaikaew was found on May 12 last year in her Western Springs, Auckland, apartment, where it had been lying in a bed for up to 3½ weeks.

Gordon Hieatt, a 48-year-old computer programmer, has pleaded not guilty in the High Court at Auckland to her murder, claiming instead that the killing amounted to manslaughter.

The first officer to see the body, Constable Kym Lam Sam, said that when he first entered he was struck by a terrible smell and saw dead flies scattered on the ground.

There were burned incense sticks in the room and a fan pointing at a bed where he saw the contours of a body under the covers with "larvae'' on top.

He announced that he was a police officer and tapped the ankle-area with his flashlight before removing the covers from the face to reveal the dead body underneath.

Hieatt was calm, quiet and emotionless when he admitted to the killing, Mr Sam said.

The police officers who responded to a call from Ms Viakaew's landlord on May 12 were greeted by a smell "indescribable and putrid", Ms Reed said.

Viakaew's body was on a double bed in a curtained-off corner of the lounge, covered in blankets, with a dressing gown over the head.

Detective Constable Scott Jones said she was slightly curled up as if she was sleeping and was holding a playing card – the ace of hearts – in her hand, pointed towards her face.

A fan was set up over the bed to try to alleviate the stench, Ms Reed said.

Landlord Ray Goffin said he called police after he went into the house inquiring after her well-being and noticed a "very strong dead smell".

"I'm a ex-butcher and a farmer and I know a dead meat smell. It wasn't right – the state of the place – there was something wrong."

Mr Goffin said he encountered Hieatt in the flat and he said he was Ms Viakaew's boyfriend and that she was not well.

Ms Reed said Hieatt killed Ms Viakaew on April 16 but went about his life as normal – taking trips to Wellington, visiting other prostitutes and going to family gatherings.

An examination of his computer showed he had been on instant chat site MSN with another girlfriend in Thailand during the time his partner lay rotting next to him. The chat logs showed him saying Ms Viakaew "had gone and she was never coming back".

He later said Ms Viakaew "had made him crazy and he had killed her on Friday".

In other conversations he said he had read jokes for a day to cheer himself up.

Giving evidence at his trial in the High Court at Auckland for murder, Gordon Hieatt, 48, said he strangled Nuttidar Vaikaew, also 48, with a slipknot after they had an argument in April last year.

After she was dead, Hieatt washed her with a cloth before spending the night in bed with her body, the court was told yesterday.

He denied touching her in a sexual way.

Prosecutor David Johnstone said Hieatt made a conscious decision to kill Ms Vaikaew after he punched her and became worried she would contact the police.

Hieatt responded yesterday: "I didn't want to kill her, it's not what I wanted to do."

Murder accused Gordon Hieatt says he killed his sex worker girlfriend after they argued about him having to leave her small apartment when she was seeing clients.

"She could have worked in a massage parlour or she could have just ignored me being there," he told the High Court at Auckland this afternoon.

Hieatt said it wasn't fair that he was made to leave her apartment when he paid more than half the rent.

"Really that was fair enough though, wasn't it, because it was her house," Crown prosecutor David Johnstone said to him.

"How could she earn any money?"

Johnstone said that Hieatt didn't really care about Vaikaew and was just using her for sex because his other girlfriend in Thailand was sick of him and he had nowhere else to go.

Hieatt had told the court Vaikaew started screaming at him to give her money for rent - which Johnstone said was strange because this happened on a Friday and rent wasn't due until Tuesday.

The court was told Hieatt had just smoked a joint.

He then tried to cover her mouth with masking tape, which he said was "just one of those stupid ideas that don't seem so stupid when you're stoned".

When Vaikaew tried to escape he carried her back to the bed, held her face down and muffled her cries for help with bedding, loosening some of her teeth and caused her mouth to bleed.

Hieatt said she was wriggling around quite strongly and he was worried that she would call police if he let her go.

"She was waiting for me to drop my guard so she could run away."

She then said "you want to kill me", at which point something in him "snapped" and he strangled her for about two minutes, he said.

Hieatt said he never intended to kill Vaikaew but she had wanted to die.

"I came to the conclusion it was equivalent to suicide by cop," Hieatt said.
