A mother is being charged in the death of her own eight month old baby.
Thirty one year old Natalie Thorton of Carencro was arrested for second degree murder for the death of her eight month old daughter.
Details surrounding the case are still unclear police officials tell us at this point the only information collected is based on the story Thorton gave officers early Monday morning.
Thorton tells Police she left her daughter in the car while she went inside her residence. She says the eight month old was inside unattended for approximately five hours with the heater turned on.
Thorton says when she finally went to check on the infant the baby was non-responsive.
Thorton got into her vehicle and frantically sought help. She saw a Lafayette police officer at a convenient store and the officer called Acadian Ambulance. Unfortunately the child did die.
Police are now waiting on a report from the coroner's office to determine the time and cause of death. Police officials tell us collecting physical evidence takes time and the coroner's report will shape the focus of the on-going investigation.
We briefly spoke with some family members of little girl this afternoon and the grieving relatives are taking the death hard.
The infant's father is returning to Lafayette from his offshore job.
