BURLINGTON, N.C. -- A 65-year-old man suffered serious injuries on Wednesday when a 17-year-old beat him with his own cane during a robbery, Burlington Police Assistant Chief Greg Seel said.

Seel said the incident happened at about 3:45 p.m. at a location on North Ireland Street.

The suspect, Dameo Lee Tanner, was arrested and charged with assault with a deadly weapon while inflicting serious injury and attempted armed robbery.

The victim, John Jefferies, was taken by helicopter to Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center to be treated for his injuries. He was last listed in critical, but stable condition, Seel said.

Tanner was being held on a $50,000 bond.

Seel said the incident wasn't random, and Tanner and Jefferies were acquaintances.
