ASPEN, Colo. -- A Pitkin County man faces felony charges for allegedly stealing painkillers from a monk -- at least once during a sermon.
Daniel Kramer, 23, of Carbondale surrendered to authorities Tuesday. Bond was set at $13,500.
Authorities say Kramer, a congregation member at St. Benedict’s Monastery in Snowmass, was caught on surveillance video stealing a bottle of Vicodin from Father Joseph Boyle’s bedroom at the monastery while Boyle was leading mass.
The camera had been placed in Boyle’s room after the monk and a brother at the monastery noticed their prescription drug bottles had been disappearing, the Aspen Times reported.
The brother claimed 10 pills of Percocet, which he was prescribed after undergoing back surgery, had gone missing.
Kramer faces felony charges of second-degree burglary which carries four to 12-years in prison, and misdemeanor counts of theft and unlawful use of a controlled substance.
