Abdullah Fisher Injured After Being Restrained At School

HILLSBOROUGH COUNTY -- Even on a dreary day, Abdullah Fisher wears sunglasses because it's too painful not to.
Last Thursday, the 8th grader came home from the Dorothy Thomas School with hemorrhaging in both eyes and a strained neck.
"When Abdullah came he had blood running down to the left corner of his eyes and I couldn't believe it," said his mother, Deborah Williams, "I couldn't believe it, I said, 'Abdullah what happened?'"
Williams rushed him to the hospital and called the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office.
It turns out, Abdullah knocked papers out of his teacher's hand at the Dorothy Thomas School and refused to go to time out.
That's when an aide at the school restrained him by putting him in a neck hold.
"He was choking me and I kept telling him I couldn't breathe," said Fisher.
According to the Hillsborough County School district, the aide has worked there for two years and is well trained at restraining students who are out of control.

"All indications from the school are that he handled it properly," said Hillsborough County Schools spokesperson Linda Cobbe, "however, there is an investigation being conducted by Child Protective Services."
Williams said her son is mentally challenged and admits he can be disruptive. She said school officials called her to tell her Abdullah was restrained, but failed to say he was injured.

The 14 year old was moved from his last school two months ago for disruptive behavior, but Williams feels extreme force was used in this situation.
Cobbe said the aide is in another position where he's not dealing with children while the investigation takes place. She also said unruly kids can often pose a threat to teachers and students.

"They can be very difficult and depending on the size of the student more people would be in danger," said Cobbe. "Certainly, any student that's thrown things or flings their arms or is fighting is a danger not only to teachers but other students in the class."
    [...]
"I want justice to be served," she said. " I want punishment because if it was me, I'm pretty sure enough they would have jailed me and said child abuse."

Williams said the doctors are hopeful the hemorrhaging will go away in a few weeks. In the meantime, her son has been out of school for a week and she is trying to find another school for him to attend.

I am having a harrd time with this story. I totally understand that some kids can be pretty disruptive, and this child has a history. However, why is a choke hold being used in scholl, to the point that this child's eyes are bleeding?

This kid's parents need to find a school better suited for the child's condition. Now the teacher that placed him in a choke hold should be removed. There is no excuse for what he did.

Deport the little bastard to Yemen.
Yet know, my master, God omnipotent,
Is mustering in his clouds on our behalf
Armies of pestilence; and they shall strike
Your children yet unborn and unbegot,
That lift your vassal hands against my head
And threat the glory of my precious crown.

I'm surprised the mom didn't go up there and kick some asses!
"The path of the righteous man is beset on all sides by the iniquities of the selfish and the tyranny of evil men. Blessed is he who, in the name of charity and good will, shepherds the weak through the valley of the darkness. For he is truly his brother's keeper and the finder of lost children. And I will strike down upon thee with great vengeance and furious anger those who attempt to poison and destroy my brothers. And you will know my name is the Lord when I lay my vengeance upon thee."

You get a big 14 year old and you have your hands full restraining him
Bottom line if he hadn't been kicking and punching, and kept struggling with the aid this wouldn't have happened and the kid has a history of disruptive behavior, which is probably a nice way of saying he's violent and dangerous
It's BS when some one attacks others than plays the victim when they get hurt being restrained, the harder the fight you put up the stronger the restraint will be
I'm sure this kid put up one hell of a fight when they were trying to restrain him and that's why he got hurt
Everyone complains about schools not doing enough to protect innocent students and when they do react to a danger they get sued
This was no innocent little kid that the aid roughed up, the force was probably equal to the struggle needed too restrain him, he was a violent dangerous student they did their best to control
The kids mother expects the kid to fight back and now she's complaining about the use of a full Nelson to restrain her son?
    what a stupid ignorant idiot

Fisher said it started last Thursday when he "smacked" paper out of his teacher's hands. Staff called in the school's resource officer, formally called an exceptional student education aide, and a scuffle escalated, according to Fisher. That aide tried to put Fisher in a time-out room, but he fought back.

"He's just a child; he's going to want to fight back, but there's a way to restrain people," Williams said. "You don't have to choke him and shorten his breath [or] cut off his circulation."

I agree with biteme on this one – I have a 13 year old boy and an 11 year old boy – both are big, strong boys. Thank God they are respectful and well-behaved without any of the problems this kid obviously has. If it came down to having to physically restrain either one of my boys, it would take a full-nelson from a large, strong man to subdue them. This kid obviously has emotional and mental issues.

I have seen teachers injured by out-of-control kids like him and have witnessed doctors declare a classroom an “unsafe working environment” because several teachers have been physically injured by a particular student. I would not want my kids mainstreamed with a kid who is physically violent – God forbid a student gets hurt because of this child’s behavior. This kid needs to learn that he will suffer consequences for his actions – he should be kicked out of school and placed in a special needs school before anyone else gets hurt. A little subconjunctival hemorrhage is a small price to pay in order to ensure the safety for the rest of the class. He is 14 with the mind of a 3rdgrader –even in 3rd grade, children know to respect their teachers and do what they are told. Maybe his mother should home-school him for a while before she forms that opinion that he did not need to be choked or restrained
