    Murder-Suicide at CELINA, Ohio Daycare

The Celina Police Department responded to a call of a murder suicide at 1:52 p.m. Friday.

The incident took place at 719 S. Elm Street, which is a residential area in the southwest part of the city. Officers arrived at the scene and found neighbors standing near the home.

Officers explained that children had come from the home and told them that there had been a shooting. Officers entered the home and said they found the body of April C. Vann, age 33, who lived at the residence.

According to police, officers also found the body of Eric L. Vann, 34, who had been staying at a rural Celina home with a friend. A baby was also found in a playpen in a different section of the home, the baby was not injured.

A baby was also found in a playpen in a different section of the home, police said. The baby was not injured.

The incident was complicated by the fact that the woman provided day care services at her home. At the time of the shooting, there were seven children at the residence, either in the back yard or in the house. Initial interviews indicated that the children did not witness the actual shooting, but did hear the gunshots and realized what had happened.

The incident was complicated by the fact that April Vann provided day care services at her home. All of the children were under the age of six.

Immediately after the shooting had occurred, six of the children, together as a group, left the house and went to a neighbor, seeking help. They stated that they were unable to get the baby that was left in the home out of the playpen to bring with them.

They were able to contact the next door neighbor and that is when the call was made to emergency services.

None of the children were injured, and it is not believed that they were ever a subject or a target of this incident. One of the children, a 4-year-old boy, was the son of the deceased couple. The parents of the day care children were all contacted and were able to pick up their children from the scene shortly after the incident was reported.

The Celina Police Department worked with the Celina City Schools and Mercer County Children’s Services to insure the victim’s children that were still in school, ages 11 and 7, and other school age children who were daycare clients, were cared for after school dismissal.

The Vann couple was separated and there was an active court order preventing Eric Vann from being around April, or near her home.

Family members from both parents’ families met and made arrangements for the care of the Vann children. Both bodies were taken to the Montgomery County Coroner’s Office for autopsies.

Well. That restraining order worked rather well, didn't it?

See, It pisses me off. Restraining orders are nothing but a waste of time and money, and trees. If someone wants to kill you, they are going to do it. That piece of paper isn't going to turn into Superman and beat the hell out of someone if they violate what is written on it.

Restraining orders should come with shock collars that would bring the person to their knees and keeps them down until the police show up IMHO.

So relieved baby and none of the other children were injured or killed. SICK of those stores. Must have been very scary for them and so brave and smart to work together as a group, far smarter than some adults we read on.

So sorry for the little one who lost his parents.

I'm thankful the guy didn't decide to take the kids into the afterlife with him and his wife. As for restraining orders, I agree, to this time they are useless. I think it would help a great deal of other states followed Kentucky's lead with Amanda's Bill, which has since became "Amanda's Law". To explain a bit what it involves, I'll borrow this description, known as "Amanda's Bill," that would allow judges to order electronic monitoring in domestic-violence cases if certain violations of protective orders occur, such as assault, burglary or kidnapping.

The tracking devices would alert victims and police if alleged abusers get too close. Granted, the offender first has to violate the Restraining Order before a judge will order a tracking device, but it's a start.

A Murder-Suicide In My Hometown Of Celina, Ohio

Michael Williams recalled the life of his daughter April Vann exclusively to NewsChannel 15 and the relationship that led to her death.

April was killed Friday, October 29 when her estranged husband Eric Vann shot her in the head in the laundry room of her own home. He then turned the gun on himself.

April had been running a daycare at the time. Seven kids under the age of six were around the home at the time of the murder-suicide. Williams told NewsChannel 15 April had re-filed no contact papers toward Eric the day before the incident.

Williams said April told the kids at the daycare if they ever saw Eric around the home, to go in the neighbor's house and tell them to call the police. Police said just before 2:00 Friday, Eric hopped the fence in April's backyard, walked in the back door, locked it behind him, and approached April in the laundry room. Without saying a word, he put the barrel of the gun to his estranged wife's nose and pulled the trigger. He immediately put the barrel of the gun to the side of his head and pulled the trigger.

The kids saw Eric walk through the back door, but didn't go to the neighbor's house first. A few of them, including April's four-year-old son, instead crawled through the doggy door of April's house to round up the rest of the kids and "help April." Williams said the children didn't see the murder-suicide, but his grandson told him he saw "mommy's nose bleeding."

This wasn't the first time Eric had fired a gun in the home. Williams said domestic issues started when April went to a parent-teacher conference.

"One of the mothers that she babysits for told her that he was having an affair with one of the other mothers that she babysat for," said Williams. "That's when she decided she was going to end it."

The relationship took a turn for the worse in September, when April told Eric it was over. Eric said he was going to kill himself, but this time he only fired a gun through an upstairs window. The 34-year-old was arrested and charged with one count of using a weapon while intoxicated, and two counts of operating a vehicle under the influence.

The dangers Eric posed to both April and her family became even more real inside a Mercer County courtroom after April told the judge, she feared for her safety.

"When she said that to the judge, Eric turned around and looked at her and I and mouthed the words, 'You're dead,'" said Williams. "I think from right then April knew that if he ever got out, he would kill her."

In September, the judge approved no-contact papers between the Celina couple. Later, April had the judge allow limited visitation so her estranged husband could babysit her kids while she took online classes. But Williams said Eric started harassing April by calling at all hours of the night.

The day before she was killed, April re-filed no contact papers. She started telling her family more about her daily routine, leaving clues that led her family to believe she knew her time was coming.

"She was telling her oldest son that if she ever died she wanted to be cremated and her ashes sprinkled in the Pacific Ocean with a pod of blue whales," said Williams.

Williams said he feared for his life during an encounter two days before his daughter was killed. He got a knock on his door early in the morning and thought it was Eric. The Rockford man grabbed a gun, told his wife to lock the door behind him and call 911 if she heard gunshots. Williams didn't find anything. After his daughter was killed, he found out April's grandfather had the same thing happen early Wednesday morning.

"We honestly feel that it was Eric trying to fulfill his promise on killing April's family one by one," said Williams.

    Why do women date idiots?
Yet know, my master, God omnipotent,
Is mustering in his clouds on our behalf
Armies of pestilence; and they shall strike
Your children yet unborn and unbegot,
That lift your vassal hands against my head
And threat the glory of my precious crown.

Amanda's Law would be better if the abuser were required to wear an ankle monitor immediately upon abuse being proven by clear convincing evidence. Perhaps it would stop some of these needless killings. My thoughts and prayers are with April's Father, her son and the rest of the children there that day.

I cant even begin to imagine the process these children will have to go through to heal. Most people go their whole lives without seeing this kind of stuff first hand. These guys are so young and acted so responsibly and bravely but they will never be able to erase what they saw.
