    Helen Miller Survives Impaling

Connie Odoms couldn't believe it when she came across the smashed yellow car.

A woman was trapped inside, her body pierced by a large tree branch, and no one was stopping to help near a busy intersection in Lindenhurst Tuesday morning.

"I couldn't believe people kept passing her," Odoms said. "I was ticked off."

So Odoms pulled over. "I saw a woman with the door open, hanging out of her car, saying 'Help.' "

Odoms, who is CPR-certified, said she was shaking and had to struggle to stay cool so she could calm the woman, Helen Miller, 41.

"I told her not to touch anything," Odoms said. "She was wheezing pretty bad. I didn't want her to panic. She was pretty much pinned. I just tried to keep eye contact with her."

Odoms, 34, called the woman's husband, Todd Miller, and waited until the ambulance arrived. Then she went went back to work at Allendale Associates in Lake Villa.

Miller was listed in fair condition at Advocate Condell Medical Center in Libertyville. Her husband says the tree branch impaled his wife below her lungs and above her stomach, missing vital organs.

Todd Miller, an IT auditor for Baxter Healthcare, had come home earlier than planned this week from a business trip and was there when Odoms called.

"I was here 45 minutes before the ambulance arrived with her," Todd Miller said from the hospital Tuesday. "That was some of the longest 45 minutes in my life."

Miller said his wife, a teacher at Waukegan Public School District 60 schools, was in good spirits after surgery and plans to use the tree branch for an art project.

He said he heard she was singing the Vanilla Ice song, "Ice, Ice Baby" during the ambulance ride to the hospital.

Last year, Helen Miller was treated at the same hospital for a rare heart disease. She was unconscious in the intensive care unit for more than 30 days, her husband said.

Todd Miller said he called Odoms back after the surgery to let her know how his wife was doing.

"I just prayed that she would be okay," Odoms said.

This wasn't the first time Odom has come to a stranger's assistance. About five years ago, she helped a woman whose vehicle ran off the road and smashed into a telephone pole.

"I just did what I teach kids to do, which is try to treat others as you want to be treated," Odoms said.

"If anything, I was ticked off at the people driving by," she said. "Even if they were scared, they should have at least stopped and talked to her and gotten some kind of information."

Damn, I think its criminal that people just passed her by and did nothing. There is nothing I hate more--well, there is, but in this particular article..I definitley hate that the most. Forty-Five freakin' minutes too. Damn, Damn, Damn. Crazy.

I love that she was singing Vanilla Ice on the way to the hospital. If I'm ever impaled by a tree branch that's exactly what I'm going to do.

Does this have to do with the bad weather in the west?

I heard on the news "one person was impaled by a tree, she survived"

And I thought the anchor fucked up and meant to say she did not.

When I think of "impaled" I definitely don't associate it with living.

Dear Mommy...I see you smile down there below...are those tears of joy you show? I'm glad you're happy, although you lied...I'd love to be right by your side...but by your choice, I view from above...tell my Grandparents I send my love...it's Beautiful here, is all I can say...your life will go on... without me in your way. Yes, this happened yesterday when there were gale-force winds. The branch fell 70 feet and crashed through her windshield.

i just watched on the med channel about a month ago about this one guy who was impaled by a fence post that went thru his car...he lived too...amazing how a bump in the wrong spot on your head could kill you and then someone could suffer an injury like this and survive!

They were doing some construction at my first duty station and a teenaged dependent jumped 3/4 of the way across a ditch with rebar sticking out of it. If he'd made it all the way across he would have been fine; as it was he landed on one of the rods and it went into his groin and came out his back. He survived too, because the rebar either missed or pushed aside all the vital organs in its path.

I'm so glad she survived. Every person that drove by and did nothing to help this woman should be deeply ashamed of themselves. Best of luck to Helen on a speedy recovery.

I impale women all the time.
Yet know, my master, God omnipotent,
Is mustering in his clouds on our behalf
Armies of pestilence; and they shall strike
Your children yet unborn and unbegot,
That lift your vassal hands against my head
And threat the glory of my precious crown.

Illinois woman impaled by branch sues owner of tree

WAUKEGAN, Ill. -- A suburban Chicago woman who was impaled by a tree branch during a thunderstorm last fall is suing the owner of the 65-foot tree.

Helen Miller of Lake Villa was driving through Lindenhurst on Oct. 26 when the branch crashed into her car and impaled her in the stomach.

Although the branch missed vital organs, the lawsuit claims it caused serious injuries.

The lawsuit filed in Lake County alleges Vista Health System Surgery and Treatment Center failed to properly maintain the tree. A center spokesperson cited the litigation in declining to comment.

Unless the tree was rotten and the owner of the tree was formally notified (certified letter) that it was a hazard and he failed to take action, he is not responsible. It's considered an act of God.

maybe they didn't. i suppose, if it is rotted out or something, they may get traction with the lawsuit. it is hard to imagine that it wasn't just the wrong time to be under a big tree in a little car, though...

My sweet mother in law survived being impaled by a tree branch in 2009. she was driving on a road with a very sharp left turn in it, the road had a berm built up where the turn was to stop people when they miss the turn but behind the berm was a large pile of brush, consisting of tree branches, when she missed the turn she also traveled over the berm into the brush and a large tree branch went thru the windshield and thru her abdomen. Her bowel was perforated in several places, but she survived. She's one tough little cookie.
