Ella Grace's grandmother, Renne Demery, told Local 4 that she suspects the children's father had a hand in their death.

"My first thought was -- we started screaming and crying and I said immediately, 'He killed her,'" said Demery.

Medical Examiner says two toddlers died from severe burns

ALLEN PARK, Mich. The Wayne County Medical Examiner has released the cause of death for the two toddlers who were found dead in apartment complex in Allen Park.
According to the Medical Examiner, the 13-month-old baby boy found dead along with his 15-month-old half sister, died of severe head-to-toe burns while in their father’s custody.

A forensic examiner spoke to the relatives of the older child Ella Grace Stafford this afternoon. The child’s grandmother tells Action News the little girl appeared to have less than half the burns that Jonathon “Cash” Sanderlin had on his body.
The children were found by police in the Allen Park apartment of 27-year-old Steven Nicholson around 2:00 a.m. Tuesday. Nicholson, the father of the children, is currently in police custody.
Taylor Stafford, 19, is the mother of little Ella. She tells of a bizarre, violent history between her, the baby’s father and the children. She says she not only suffered verbal and physical abuse, but that “he wasn’t nice to the little boy at all.”

She told Action News, “He would hit him and grab his arms and throw him around – not to play with him, but to hurt him... yell shut up at him and tell him to go away.”

Moms: ME Says Toddler Deaths Intentional

ALLEN PARK, Mich. - The toddlers' mothers came to the Wayne County Medical Examiner's Office on Wednesday to identify the bodies. They both say the medical examiner told them the deaths were intentional and that he's ruling homicide.
One-year-old Ella Grace Stafford and one-year-old Jonathon Sanderlin were both found dead Tuesday morning in their father's Allen Park apartment. Few can imagine what their mothers are feeling.
"It's so hard for me to accept," said Sarah McGee, Jonathon's mother.
It's absolutely terrible," said Taylor Stafford, Ella's mother.
Just a day later, the medical examiner confirmed what they already knew.
"It was intentional," McGee said.
However, the way these babies died is all the more sickening.
"Her skin was burnt off from scalding hot water," Stafford said.
"His face is just so bad," said McGee.
Ella's mother, Taylor Stafford, and Jonathon's mother, Sarah McGee, say the babies were left in the water while it got progressively hotter. McGee believes her son, Jonathon, was the intended target because his burns were more severe than Ella's.

"I knew he was going to torture him from the beginning because it was already starting off in small things like beating on him, suffocating him with pillows," McGee said.
Both mothers claimed they called police and Child Protective Services time and time again, but nothing was done. The 27-year-old father is in police custody. Sources tell FOX 2 he told police the babies climbed into the tub themselves and turned on the water. That's a story the mother's believed was a lie from the very start.
"Two babies just don't climb in a bathtub and drown themselves," said Stafford.

The father is in police custody, but he has yet to be charged.

1) Who keeps their hot water heater that hot? I can let mine run for 30 minutes, and my water NEVER gets hot enough to burn. That's ridiculous.

2) The notion that a 13 m/o or a 15 m/o could climb into a tub and get the water on alone, without the parent hearing some sort of commotion is absolutely ridiculous. My daughter is a tall girl @ 15 mos, and she can barely reach the handle to turn the water on.

And even if they did get in the tub and turn the water on I will not ever believe they knew how to put the stopper in or work the thingie that you pull up to stop the tub from draining out. I don't know about you, but I've read lots (one is too much) where someone did that to a kid with a pot of boiling water.

I don't know what the codes are there, but here housing complexes, apartment complexes have to either
1. Have a built in thermostat that prevents the water from reaching over something degrees or
2. Have something wherever the source of the heat is keeping it from reaching something degrees before it reaches that apartment.

And the smell someone smelled. When will it come out he did this days prior to the flooding?

ALLEN PARK, Mich. - A suburban Detroit father charged with first-degree murder in the deaths of his two children says he didn't harm the toddlers.

Twenty-seven-year-old Steven Nicholson was dressed in street clothes and handcuffed behind the back when he appeared Friday in an Allen Park courtroom. He shook his head no as the judge read the charges, and his voice broke as he could barely say his name.

Nicholson declared while being led away: "I didn't hurt my babies. I didn't hurt 'em. I was sleeping."

Autopsy results say 15-month-old Ella Stafford and 13-month old Jonathon Sanderlin were scalded and had drowned. They will be buried Saturday.

Nicholson has been in custody since Tuesday when police responding to an emergency call found the bodies at his apartment.

Nicholson was ordered held without bond.

The father of two toddlers was charged today with murder and child abuse in their drowning and scalding deaths.

Steven L. Nicholson, 27, who was handcuffed, sobbed and shook his head in disagreement as 24th District Judge John Courtright read the six felony charges against him, including felony murder and first-degree child abuse.

Corey Nicholson said Steven Nicholson called another relative from jail and said he was "frightened and depressed."

Some neighbors in the complex described Nicholson as "rude." Others said he was a good father to the children. Nicholson's mother has told The News that he has a drinking problem, and sometimes carried a pint of liquor in a back pocket.

Nicholson has a lengthy record of mostly misdemeanors, including malicious destruction of property and alcohol and marijuana offenses. Some of the offenses date to his teenage years. Police said they've been called to the home before.

Court authorities confirmed Nicholson at one time faced a domestic abuse charge but declined to release the records.
