    Elementary Student Tattled On Parents

MATTHEWS, NC (WBTV) - Two parents are facing drug charges after their child took their drugs to school and told a school officer his parents were breaking the law.

WBTV is not releasing the names of the parents or the name of the school to protect the child's identity.

The 11-year-old student is in 5th grade at a an elementary school in Matthews. Police say he brought his parents' marijuana cigarettes to school when he reported them.

Matthews Police say he reported his parents after a lesson about marijuana was delivered by a police officer who is part of the D.A.R.E. program, which teaches kids about the dangers of drugs, alcohol, and tobacco.

"Even if it's happening in their own home with their own parents, they understand that's a dangerous situation because of what we're teaching them," said Matthews Officer Stason Tyrrell. That's what they're told to do, to make us aware."

Tyrrell says the town's D.A.R.E. officer spends time at each of the three elementary schools in Matthews teaching kids to make the right choice when it comes to drugs.

Police arrested the child's 40-year-old father and 38-year-old mother on Thursday.

Both were charged with two misdemeanor counts each of marijuana possession and possession of drug paraphernalia.

They were not jailed and were released on a written promise to appear in court.

"I don't give drugs to my kids," the father told us when we went to his house.

When we asked him how his kid got ahold of his drugs, he replied, "That's no one's business."

Police say both the 11-year old and a sibling have been removed from the parents' house by social services. Police say they are staying with relatives.
Sad thing is: It's just weed.

If you do your homework D.A.R.E. doesn't work, at best.

At worst, it has the opposite of the desired effect by making kids aware of drugs and that some are worse than others and piques their curiosity.

    I'm just saying.

Blessed is he who, in the name of charity and good will, shepherds the weak through the valley of the darkness. For he is truly his brother's keeper and the finder of lost children. And I will strike down upon thee with great vengeance and furious anger those who attempt to poison and destroy my brothers. And you will know my name is the Lord when I lay my vengeance upon thee."

OMG! This sucks. Stupid parents for leaving their stash in reach of their kid. Having said that, it is ridiculous that people are being prosecuted for having pot. I also think it is stupid for schools to teach children b.s. about pot. They teach kids that pot will make them stupid, steal from other people, hurt people, not be able to function as a normal person..... all lies.

Okay I get the "it's just weed" mentality. However...if you're going to break the law (whether you agree with it or not) maybe you should:

    A) Not let your kids know about it
    B) Not leave your drugs where your kids have access to them
    you think you're god's gift
    you're a liar...

I totally agree with the above but...

What if this wasn't about drugs? What if this was about political or religious affiliation, or about country of origin? This kind of shit scares the hell out of me.

I can't wait for when an Arizona elementary school kid turns in his parents (or neighbors) for not having their papers in order. Sieg Heil!

Agree completely. Even tho many do pot as recreation, STILL the responsible thing is to do it away from the kids not in sight, certainly not made easily accessible.

You want your children to be good law abiding citizens, well this kid did what was taught. And I'd much rather he learn about the dangers about drugs than go to school high as I heard 2 jr. kids did so at my neighboring junior school. It's sad 'cause if this kid felt he could ask his parents questions about why they do pot and why its against the law, this might have been avoided. Do it behind closed doors for fuck sake, I don't blame the kid at all.

That's exactly what the issue is for me. Like I stated above, my daughter came home yesterday informing me how I "need" to vote. No I don't and I shouldn't have my child putting that pressure on me or anyone because the school or her teacher feels that way. Whether I vote or not is MY business and choice. I don't do weed myself but I know and have known parents that do and I really don't care as long as it is not around the children or in their reach. That is the only thing about this story that I don't agree with/like. The kid shouldn't have been able to access it. Otherwise, the school and LE has just turned that kid into another "good little citizen".

I remember a family member talking to other adults about the dangers of DARE. I dunno if DARE was around when I did it but I've been told the story about the time I took my maternal grandfather out to my dad's weed patch. MY mom said he never visited that home again. I don't remember that particular incident but I do remember riding with my dad in his old Army jeep up the hills when he tended to the patches up in the woods. After I led papaw to that one close to the house I wasn't allowed around it for a loooong time. LOL

But it sucks because all my cousins know how to grow it, but not me.

    I'm just saying.
I disagree. I think the DARE program is good. It's different than when I was in school in that the education varies according to the age. It doesn't just deal with drugs, it deals with bullying, domestic violence and lots of other situations a child encounters as part of life. I'm glad my kid formed a relationship with his officer and doesn't automatically hate or distrust the police, despite how I may personally feel about the police.

I'm just telling you what they teach at the university where I attend, and that is that in a majority of cases D.A.R.E. has the opposite of its intended effect when it comes to the drug side of it.

The rest is probably a good thing.

    Your womb is polluted.
Yet know, my master, God omnipotent,
Is mustering in his clouds on our behalf
Armies of pestilence; and they shall strike
Your children yet unborn and unbegot,
That lift your vassal hands against my head
And threat the glory of my precious crown.

I'm torn...My parents were open and informative about drugs and sex so the school wasn't teaching me anything new, I had been taught all of it well before they got their hands on me. Yet some of my peers got all of their information from the school and none from their "parents". Hell, MY parents taught my friends about safe sex and drinking and drugs. They also maintained a pretty open-door policy with our friends if they had questions.

While I personally do not partake of any drugs anymore, I DID smoke A LOT of pot. I always felt completely turned off when parents of my friends wanted to smoke and drink with us...it was just so awkward. In hindsight most of my friends growing up in households like that were left to fend for themselves while their parents relived youth.

I feel the worse for the kid, he told on his parents b/c what was drilled into his head. As a child I had reported my own mother being abused to CPS unknowingly and it has caused permanent damage to our relationship but hey, the school told me to tell them if someone was hurting someone else so I did what I had been told to do. Nothing will fix the damage done to this family and perhaps if I was the parent who wanted to smoke pot I would have taken the time to educate my child or opt out of the DARE program. Unless things have changed my parents HAD to sign a permission slip for me to take DARE and sex ed. A few kids I went to school with were kept out of the DARE and sex ed classes per their parents wishes.
At first, I was thinking, "Oh, what the FUCK is this shit?" Then I was chewing my nails and screaming at Mr. Lizard: "PAUSE IT! I HAVE TO GO PEE!" ~Lizard

And all b/c the guy was trying to steal a pants full of meat!! ~whisperswing

I was in D.A.R.E in E.S. I don't remember much, but we had a workbook and an officer came in to teach it or whatever. I forgot what I did, but I won a ride in a DARE truck in 2 parades. Anyway, I've done drugs since then, so I doubt it had any impact on me. LOL But, when I did do drugs and drink I was responsible about it- if that makes any sense.
I fart in your general direction.
