Crystal Sanders and Michael Wihebrink Broke Their 5 Month Old Boy

A Somber morning at work is an understatement. Crystal Sanders is the step-sister to my good friend/co-worker. His family is in complete shock right now. I don't think the full magnitude of this trgedy has hit them. I feel sick to my stomach over this. This is a huge deal seeing that his family in Indiana are pretty big and anger seems to be the feeling at this beginging point.

MUNCIE -- A Muncie couple were arrested this week after their five-week-old son was found to be suffering from brain damage and multiple injuries to his arms, legs and ribs, allegedly as a result of abuse.

Michael R. Wihebrink, 25, 1500 E. Dartmouth Ave., and Crystal L. Saunders, 19, 2103 N. Wolf St., were being held without bond Wednesday in the Delaware County jail, preliminarily charged with neglect of a dependent causing serious bodily injury, a Class B felony carrying a standard 10-year prison term.
Wihebrink is also preliminarily charged with a second Class B felony, battery of a child.
The couple's son was taken to Riley Hospital for Children in Indianapolis on Monday, where he is still under care, according to Muncie Police Sgt. Jimmy Gibson. Riley officials said Wednesday they could not confirm whether the baby was still a patient there, or the child's condition.
"I don't have a prognosis for him," Gibson said. "I don't think he's in critical danger."
According to a probable cause affidavit, Riley Hospital officials notified the Muncie Division of Child Services that the boy had suffered several injuries, including an apoxic head injury, with damage to the brain due to the lack of oxygen.
Gibson said Riley officials told his office last night that there was also evidence of an epidural hematoma, which causes bleeding between the skull and the brain's covering.
Other reported injuries to the infant included breaks to both upper arms, a broken lower arm, a broken collar bone, a spiral fracture of the lower leg, a broken femur and evidence of already-healing injuries to the boy's wrists and ribs -- all apparently the result of abuse from his parents.
"It looks like he'd been hurt previously in his short little life, and it had already began to heal some," Gibson said. "This didn't all happen at one time."
According to the police report, Saunders originally told police on Monday one of the child's arms could've been broken when the mother "caught the child as it fell from her sitting on a couch with the baby."But when questioned by police the next day, Saunders admitted that she had also seen Wihebrink "shaking, holding the baby tight, cupping his hand over the baby's mouth, and yelling at the infant to 'Shut the ---- up, you whining b----."
Saunders also admitted to waiting a day to seek treatment of her son after hearing a "thump on the floor" from the other room when Wihebrink on Sunday was allegedly attempting to burp the crying child.
Police located Wihebrink on Tuesday, where he was questioned about the abuse allegations. During the interview, Wihebrink admitted to having an "anger problem."
Wihebrink -- who told police he suffers from "memory problems" -- also said he "may have" caused the child to break his arm on Sunday, but said he "couldn't remember" if he caused the other injuries to the baby, saying it was possible, according to the police report.
Wihebrink is no stranger to local authorities, having been booked into the Delaware County jail nine times. He was convicted of battery by body waste (in 2006), possession of marijuana (2008) and receiving stolen property (2004).
Court records reflected no prior charges or convictions for Saunders.
Gibson said the infant involved already had prior medical issues, including a case of kidney renal failure that he was set to receive surgery for in the coming months.

I imagine the act of birth to be a tad painful. Right after you enter the world, people handling you and poking you and passing you back and forth. Bright lights, strange loud voices in every direction. What a fucking trip. Ya know? And then go from that to these fucking beasts beating on you because your hungry and need to be changed. I wonder to myself if this child was ever comforted. So gentle, so delicate. I hope that this family can fix what has happen to this precious child.

I love how all these people who go into a fit of "sudden rage" happen to lose memory of what they did. Later on, he will remember and then "try to kill himself" and be held on suicide watch hoping to be saved from Bubba or shipped to a hospital instead. Makes me sick how they invent these cycles.

It only took 5 weeks for Crystal Saunders & Micheal Wihebrink to almost kill baby

A little boy from Muncie is fighting for his life just five weeks after he was born. Police say he's the victim of abuse at the hands of his parents. As I-Team 8 discovered, the parents nearly beat the boy to death

Crystal Saunders, 19, and 26-year-old Micheal Wihebrink are now in the Delaware County Jail. Both are facing charges of neglect of a dependant causing serious bodily injury. The victim is their 5-week-old son, Brayden.

Grandfather Henry Tucker spoke to 24-Hour News 8 outside the couple's home.

"When they left here, one arm was broke. We found a lot more injuries," Tucker said. “It had been happening since day one."

Crystal told her doctor that she thought Brayden broke his arm when she tried to catch him as he rolled off a couch. But later she told police Micheal had shaken the baby, cupping his hands over the baby's mouth and yelling at the infant to shut up. The Department of Child Protective Services was called. The baby was transferred to Riley Hospital for Children with a long list of injuries: three fractures of the arm, one of the jaw, broken ribs, collarbone and legs. He also had brain damage from lack of oxygen. And perhaps most telling, he had a broken wrist that had already healed.

"I don't think Crystal had anything to do with beating Brayden. It was Mike, fully," said Amber Shaw, a family friend. "I've known Crystal since she was 10 or 11 years old. She's not that type of person."

"Everything's been good. She's been a good mom," says neighbor Misty Wilson. "And that guy (Wihebrink), I've known him personally from people he's hung out with. I know his face, I know the crowd he hung out with and it's a bad crowd."

Later, Wihebrink told police he has an anger problem, and a memory problem. He did remember why he didn't go with the baby to Riley — he has an outstanding arrest warrant.

"I'm the one who drove her up. He didn't want no part of that. He didn't want to go. He preferred to do his drugs rather than dealing with his son," Shaw said. "He's trash."

Wihebrink also faces a charge of battery on a child.

I-Team 8 tried to talk with both the mother and the father behind bars. Both declined our request for an interview.

I am really really hoping that red mark on his cheek is from the cops ruffing him up when he was arrested.

Also I don't care what moms friends say she let it happen so she is just as guilty as the dad is. She could have grabbed her baby up the first time he was hurt and got him treatment. I am sure there is somebody in her family who would have helped her keep the baby safe..She was afraid of losing her man and her baby will forever be damaged, that is if he survives. Selfish bitch!!

5 weeks old and this sweet innocent baby incurred all these injuries???? CPS Pleeeeeeeease do the right thing here. Forget reunification. Put this sweet baby in the arms of a woman who can't give birth and who will love this baby as her own and give him a MUCH better life than these 2 POS can ever dream of providing. Please don't let this innocent baby go back.

He has memory problems and takes drugs -- chickens and eggs. Anger problems and drugs -- well, I guess he's not taking the right drugs or he'd be too comatose to be angry about much. Stupid choices and stupid actions lead stupid people to prison. His head looks tough as a rock, too, so I guess that lessons come hard.

As to Crystal being a good person and a good mom, the problem is she'd hang out with, have sex with, and stay with the bad boys who do harm to others. If she were a good mom, she'd at least take her baby to a doctor when he was injured -- right after she saw the POS shaking, squeezing, yelling, and muffling the baby. Young women who have attractions to bad boys (and on some level didn't we all?) have to grow out of it sometime. Hopefully, they don't manage to have babies with the stink weeds first.

Bones will heal but the lack of oxygen, I hope didn't leave permanent damage.

This fucker has memory issues. I'd love to fix his memory for good. This woman lived and breathed with this asshole and did things only a woman called a whore does with a man who beats her child.

I hope they never get to see or hold baby Brayden again. Looks like he had a rough time much from the beginning. He doesn't look too happy here.

Be happy and safe little one.

As of now the Grandparents (James' parents) are trying to gain custody. Then, as for the two dumpsters--there was NO bond set for either as of Sunday.

I'm still on my "just kill them" streak, but these I want to torture first. I'd like to take my nail clippers and just start clipping away at them. See how they like being scared and in pain! Poor little man, I'd take him in a heartbeat and he'd know nothing but cuddles and love.

I just don't understand these idiots! 5 weeks? All my girls did at that age is sleep eat and poop! I wanted to have their photos taken and dress them up in all those cute clothes I'd been collecting for months and all they wanted to do was sleep! So,..I cuddled, sang lullabies and fell in love with that sweet new baby smell.

What on earth could a child do in five short weeks to cause any irritation at all? That's still the honeymoon period when your sooooo proud to finally get to hold your baby in your arms and see them sleep in that beautiful room you'd been fixing for them all those months! I just don't get it! This woman should never, be allowed to have another child, ever. She had her shot and blew it,.never again!

These parents suck but I did want to point out that the pic Silva linked is from the day he was born. So he looks that way from the birth, not a beating. Don't want anyone upset by the pic. My kids looked worse!

Actually that's what I meant. He had a rough time from the beginning, meaning hard birth apparently as it is a hospital pic.
I think it said somewhere too that it was touch-no go at first after birth.

After then we know it was abusive touch.

My niece looked real bad after birth bruises and all, forceps delivery.

Death is too kind for these fuckers.

I think for the mother, if we can call her that, should be given a tubal ligation without painkillers or sterlized equipment. After she is in a weakened state, I say put her in a place like the tower in England. Every hour on the hour, she is to be flogged and have small pieces of bamboo shoved under her nails. With a hammer.

The sperm donor, since I believe he did most of the damage should be put on a diet of dog food and chained to a pole in the middle of his jail cell. He will be allowed to use the restroom and shower, but after he is done, he is to continue to be in the nude. Why? Because then he gets the floggings also. But right until he begins to bruise. Then pull back. Continue to do this until you can peel his skin off the muscle. Hang him by skin on hooks while still alive.

    Done.
    I'm gonna hug you!

My youngest daughter cried day and night for the first three or so months of her life. She was having trouble pooping and was often in pain. We went to the doctor all the time and eventually the problem went away. Well during that time there was nothing you could do to comfort her. The whole time she was pushing a poop out she would scream. It seemed like I never slept at that time because I had a one year old too. I often felt overwhelmed yet never once did I hit my kids.

I found the best thing for me was to put my one year old in her pack and play with a safe toy. Then put my screaming baby into her swing. Sit them both by my large sliding glass door. The I would sit on the deck where I could still see them both but could get a minute to just clear my head before going back in for more. I felt bad for my baby. It was easy to tell she was in pain. I know I wanted her pain to go away not cause her more pain.
