Man, she has definitely aged in looks in the year since she was arrested. That is one scary looking woman.

What I keep thinking when I look at her picture is that it's really really horrible and scary to know that this was the last thing that little Zahra saw before she died. That poor little kid. An abusing, murdering stepmother and a bio father who didn't give a shit enough to find out if she was actually around for two weeks. What a miserable life that little girl must've had.

Only one she's fooling is herself.
Elisa Baker, in her first public interview, insisted from jail Friday that she was innocent despite pleading guilty last month to murdering her stepdaughter Zahra.

Baker portrayed herself as a loving stepmother and an unwilling participant in covering up the 10-year-old’s mysterious death.

But her sympathetic depiction is at odds with the one painted by police of a manipulative woman who faked a kidnapping in an attempt to thwart their investigation into Zahra’s death. Family and friends accused Baker of controlling her husband and abusing her children, including Zahra.

At times, during a 30-minute interview ended abruptly by a sheriff’s deputy, she cried and rubbed her eyes; other times she poked fun at investigators and berated her husband, Adam, again accusing him of the worst offenses – including dismembering and hiding Zahra’s body.

“I pled guilty, but I’m not guilty,” she said.
    [...]

Baker said her lawyer, Scott Reilly, told her accepting a plea deal was in her best interest.

“I wouldn’t get a fair trial here, or anywhere,” she said. “I’m going to be an old woman when I get out.”

Reilly said Saturday that he advised Baker to take the plea deal because the evidence against her was strong.

Adam Baker asking for felony case to be moved from Catawba Co.
CATAWBA COUNTY, NC (WBTV) - The father of Zahra Baker is looking to get a trial for felony charges moved out of Catawba County.ing to court records, Adam Baker is filing for a change of venue for his two felony charges in the county. Baker was slated to appear in court on Monday for charges obtaining property by false pretenses and financial identity theft.

He was previously indicted on a charge of obtaining property by false pretense and identity fraud in connection with securing electricity at a his Hickory home using someone else's name.er spent time in a Caldwell County courtroom late last week, only to find out that his case on misdemeanor charges had been delayed. Baker was scheduled to have a hearing on misdemeanor charges for assault and writing several worthless checks, according to court records.
That case was continued until January 5th.
As Adam left the courtroom he spoke with WBTV's Steve Ohnesorge and told him he is frustrated at how long it is taking to resolve his misdemeanor charges in Caldwell County.
"I'm ready for it to be over with," he said.
He also talked about his wife Elisa Baker, and reacted to her comments in a published report last week that she is innocent in the death of Adam's daughter Zahra.
"I'm Angry," said Adam, "Someone who is innocent doesn't plead guilty to stuff like that."

    LITTLE GIRL LOST: ZAHRA BAKER

The disapperance of 10-year-old Zahra Baker from the community of Hickory gained international attention. Then, more than a month into the search, news of her death and
the gruesome details -- the young cancer survivor's body was
dismembered and the remains hidden across several rural areas -- shocked and angered many. People grieve
for the freckle-faced girl with the wide smile ... but they also want answers.

Just give her a life sentence and put her away. Put him away too. I will never be convinced that Adam Baker didn't have a hand in what happened to his daughter. I bet HE knows where the lost remains are, like her head, arm and leg. I don't see how some guy can live in a house and not know his daughter was gone for two weeks, he lived in that house where Zahra was dismembered and he never saw or heard ANYTHING? I'm calling bullshit.

Zahra Baker's remains returned to her father
Zahra Baker's remains are now in the custody of her father.

The Medical Examiner's office in Chapel Hill released the remains to a Hickory Funeral home two weeks ago. The remains were cremated and given to Adam Baker, Zahra's father.

    SLIDESHOW

Click here to view photos of Zahra and key players in her life and death

Adam Baker has told us in several interviews that his wish is to return home to Australia and to give Zahra a proper service and burial there.

No paperwork was filed by law enforcement, the District Attorney's office or Elisa Baker's attorneys requesting the Medical Examiner's Office to continue holding on to the remains.

Policy at the Medical Examiner's Office is that after a waiting period, if they are not notified, they will release remains to a family member or a person "in standing."

Officials have said in the past that Adam Baker would be the first person eligible to ask for Zahra's remains.

He can't leave the country yet, however, because of several outstanding misdemeanors and two felonies against him unrelated to the Zahra Baker Case.

Elisa Baker pled guilty to second degree murder in September and sentenced to 18 years in prison.

She is awaiting trial on federal drug charges.

At Elisa's hearing, authorities said there was no evidence to implicate Adam Baker in the death of his daughter.

On December 1, a new law was enacted in North Carolina and has become known as "Zahra's Law" or House Bill 227.

The updated law makes it a felony to disturb or dismember human remains.

According to the law, "any person who, with the intent to conceal the death of a person, fails to notify a law enforcement authority of the death or secretly buries or otherwise secretly disposes of a dead human body is guilty of a Class I felony."

The law also includes punishment for anyone who "attempts to conceal evidence of the death of another by knowingly and willfully dismembering or destroying human remains, by any means, including removing body parts or otherwise obliterating any portion thereof, shall be guilty of a Class H felony."

Parts of 10-year-old Zahra Baker's body were found in multiple sites around Catawba and Caldwell counties months after her disappearance was reported in October 2010. Zahra's arm bone, prosthetic leg, torso and pelvic area were found.

Police said they also found a saw, which they believe was used to cut up the girl's body. A vertebrae and other bones of Zahra were also found with saw cut marks on them, an investigator said earlier this year.

But Zahra's head and many other body parts were never found.

When asked last year if the rest of Zahra's remains would ever be located, Chief Tom Adkins said "There's only one person in the world who knows, and she's not talking."

Elisa Baker pleaded guilty in the death of her 10-year-old stepdaughter in September 2011. Baker pleaded guilty to various charges including second-degree murder, obstruction of justice, and bigamy.

The potential maximum total sentence for all charges would typically be 60 years in prison. But, under the plea deal in presented in court, Baker would be sentenced to only a maximum of 18 years in prison.

This act took effective on December 1 and applies to offenses committed on or after that date.

    Baker accepts drug plea

Dec. 24—Elisa Baker, who pleaded guilty in September to murdering her 10-year-old stepdaughter, Zahra, has cut a deal with prosecutors on federal drug-trafficking charges.

In a plea agreement filed earlier this week, Baker agreed to plead guilty to conspiring to distribute a mixture that contained painkillers oxycodone and hydrocodone, and the anti-anxiety drug alprazolam.

The conspiracy charge is punishable by a maximum of 20 years in prison and a $1 million fine.

The plea agreement says Baker's crime involved about 12,000 doses of oxycodone, about 10,000 doses of hydrocodone and about 29,000 doses of alprazolam.

Baker has agreed in the plea bargain to pay restitution to victims directly or indirectly harmed by her conduct.

Baker was indicted in May and charged with seven federal drug offenses, each punishable by up to 20 years in prison. The plea agreement calls for prosecutors to dismiss the other six drug charges.

Baker, 43, is in the Mecklenburg County jail while she awaits the disposition of her federal drug charges.

Well, I hope this sentence is to run consecutive to the one she got for killing Zahra. It would be the biggest miscarriage of justice yet if they ran concurrent.

Burn in hell, Elisa Baker. RIP sweet angel Zahra.

This is an interesting little doc about Zahra. I think there are still far too many unanswered questions & I am really surprised they let that bitch take a plea deal without getting the straight story.
Why hasnt Adam,at the very least, been charged with child endangerment? He clearly knew zahra was being abused and did nothing.
Also what ever happened with the claims that step-monster's relatives raped Zahra? Are more people involved?
The thought of Adam being able to go back to AUS like nothing ever happened breaks my heart.
There are just too many questions...

I'm disappointed but not at all surprised with the outcome.
I wanted badly for the useless pos to face a first-degree murder charge and be tried before a jury. I just don't think there was enough evidence to determine premeditation, especially w/ little forensics evidence to support it. A jury likely would have felt she was guilty in all respects, premeditation and otherwise, but another thing to convict without a shadow of a doubt, based on facts/evidence. It could have been another Caylee and lord know's we didn't want to see that happen.

It's so unfair and hard to call it justice. 15-18 is nothing, not even the term of life Zahra might have lived.
Her father is no father and I hope he is reminded of that to his dying day.

So sorry Zahra, this not at all what we had hoped for. You were an angel of a child.

@Silvahalo, that was just beautiful. I am just amazed when I see one of your awesome tributes to the little ones who have been lost to violence. Every single one of these cases involving a kid just hits me right in the chest. I don't see how someone can deliberately murder a child, especially one as precious and so full of life and fight as Zahra was.

I am glad that Elisa Baker (or whatever her real name is) is being punished, but it's sad that she won't give up where the rest of Zahra's remains are. That makes her even more of a heartless bitch, in my opinion.

I will always feel that Adam had something to do with his daughter's death, even if it was just helping to dispose of her body after he found out that Elisa killed her. I won't ever change my mind on that, unless they come up with some perfectly indisputable evidence, and I don't see that happening. As for where the rest of the remains are, Elisa will never give up that last bit of control she might feel she has in all this and Adam CAN'T reveal the location without implicating himself.

It makes me sick to think of Adam going back to Australia and living his single life again like Zahra never existed. He is young enough that he could meet another psycho bitch on the internet and have more kids. I really pity and feel for any future child that Adam contributes sperm for.

Adam Baker deported; takes Zahra's remains
HICKORY -- Adam Baker has been deported to his native Australia and has taken the remains of his murdered 10-year-old daughter Zahra with him, Baker's attorney told reporters Monday.

Shell Pearce, who represented Baker in his legal battles in Catawba and Caldwell counties, told reporters his client quietly was deported almost two weeks ago.

Baker's daughter Zahra disappeared from the family's Hickory home in autumn 2010, and her remains were found scattered in Caldwell County in early November of that year. Baker's wife, Elisa, who was Zahra's stepmother, pleaded guilty last year to second-degree murder in Zahra's case and was sentenced to up to 18 years in prison.

Adam Baker back in Australia, but ICE didn't deport him
ICE says he left on Jan. 19; he bought his own ticket
Baker, 34, voluntarily returned to Australia on Jan. 19, said Vincent Picard, southern regional communications director for the US Immigrations and Customs Enforcement (ICE).

“Mr. Baker coordinated his return to Australia with ICE officials who verified that he had purchased a ticket to Australia and had boarded the plane prior to departure,” Picard said.

He said Baker was not deported, because he purchased his own ticket and left the country voluntarily. However, ICE officials were at the San Francisco airport to ensure Baker boarded his plane, Picard said.
    [...]

He still has court dates in March in Caldwell County for the other pending charges.

Picard said the district attorney’s office was aware of Baker preparing to leave the country.

“As Mr. Baker updated ICE officers on his travel plans, ICE also continued to keep local law enforcement agencies and prosecutors apprised of his status,” he said. “Local authorities were notified of Mr. Baker’s return plans at least 48 hours prior to his departure and indicated that they had no interest in pursuing his case.”
    [...]

After investigators found Zahra dead, Baker told members of the media he wanted to return to his native country to bury his daughter there. Baker received Zahra’s remains from the NC Medical Examiner’s Office on Nov. 21, and had them cremated. He told Pearce he planned to bury them in the family’s plot in Australia.

“Adam’s looking forward to resuming a low-key, quite, private life,” Pearce said.

The Australian mother of 10-year-old Zahra Baker who was murdered by her stepmother in North Carolina said Tuesday she has no idea what became of her daughter's ashes since the child's father brought them to Australia.
    [...]

Zahra's biological mother Emily Dietrich said her daughter's remains might have been buried in Australia without her knowledge.

"I don't have her remains and I don't even know if she's been buried at this point," Dietrich told Seven Network television.

Dietrich, from the rural town of Wagga Wagga in New South Wales state, last saw Zahra as a baby. Dietrich had been suffering postnatal depression and gave custody of her newborn to the father.

Dietrich rejected the prospect of dividing the ashes with Adam Baker.

"The way that her murder was carried out, splitting her ashes just seemed so tasteless,"
Dietrich said. "She's already in pieces."
    [...]

Pearce said he didn't want to reveal Baker's exact location in Australia.

I sincerely hope that the Australian authorities hound this guy to his dying day, that he never has one second of peace, no matter where he ends up.

I hope the birds shit on head and peck at his eyes, the cats hiss and scratch him, I hope nobody will ever associate with him except nefaious people who will just get his ass in trouble!

then the added insult of not even telling her mother where he buried or even if he buried her, hell he could have thrown her into the boot of the car and left her there.

Can you tell I really, really, dislike, no...hate this person!!!

    Adam Baker.....I spit on you!

I can't find any Australia articles. I mean I can, but they are about word for word what we got here. Aren't they looking for him for an article?

Maybe they aren't so media frenzied like we unfortunately are.

I would just really hate to think of this character disappearing into a billabong or something, I just want his life to be a living hell, comparable to Zahra's for the rest of his shitty life. I suspect that unlike Miss Case-O-Crabs, he will be able to fly under the radar, and keep it all quiet on the homefront, I'm pretty sure his MOTHER will see to that, if he doesn't.

There it is..... more proof that Adam Baker is as heartless and psycho as his ex-wife (or almost-was but never-was married ex-wife, I mean, WTF) Elisa. He stood in court and begged Elisa to tell them where the rest of Zahra's remains are, and yet, he goes back to Australia and won't tell Emily where Zahra's been buried, or IF she's even BEEN buried at all. As for splitting the ashes, Emily has the right thoughts on that. With Zahra's remains scattered all over two or three counties here, it's pretty damned tasteless to even suggest splitting up her ashes at this point. What an asshole. Well, we already knew that. He's just coming out with it publicly now.

I think we all should agree that Adam Baker should suffer for his part in the death of his daughter. I will never believe that he didn't know more than he professed to know. Maybe he didn't particpate in the actual murder, but I could see him being afraid of Elisa and being forced to help in the disposal of the remains, with no problems at all. He's not as stupid as he comes across. We need to remember that this is the same man who was communicating threats and selling drugs right along side Elisa Baker.

He knows what happened to his daughter, and he knows how it happened and who did it. No doubt in my mind.

When his time comes, if there is a hell at all, Adam Baker will be burning right along with Elisa.

Arrest order for father of slain disabled girl
LENOIR, N.C. – Authorities say Australia native Adam Baker, who has since returned home after his disabled daughter was murdered in North Carolina where he had lived, is being sought on a local arrest order on a charge unrelated to her death.

The Hickory Daily Record reports (http://bit.ly/wrtWey ) Baker had a scheduled Monday court date in Caldwell County on a charge of failure to return rental property. His attorney, Shell Pierce, said Baker returned in January to Australia at the behest of federal immigration officials. The district attorney's office said it wouldn't drop the charge.

Construction underway for playground in honor of Zahra Baker

HICKORY, NC (WBTV) - One colorful piece at a time, hundreds of volunteers are assembling a new playground in honor of Zahra Baker.

The playground is located at 805 6th St. SE in Hickory. It's a project driven by the Kiwanis, with help from the city of Hickory and numerous corporate sponsors.

Donations from the community totaling more than $200,000 and counting are making the playground possible. The original goal was to raise $100,000.

Reese Construction Company has taken the lead on building the playground.

"It's really just exciting to see the number of folks who have volunteered," said builder Clint Reese. "They've had to turn away people."

Reese and his workers are guiding hundreds of volunteers with patience and a sense of humor.

Many of the helpers don't have much building experience, but they certainly have a willingness to learn.

"To have a small piece in this is so rewarding," said Katherine Eanes, who is pitching in along with a group of colleagues from Target.

Kevin Bibbee is a volunteer who showed up by himself after his wife encouraged him to check out the project. The couple has three daughters; two are disabled.

Bibbee is excited that the playground will have several features made just for children with disabilities, including wheelchair accessible ramps and rides, as well as a padded floor.

"They have a very limited understanding, but once they get on the ride, the smiles will speak for itself," said Bibbee. "They'll be happy.
    [...]
That's exactly why hundreds of volunteers are giving their time and money to make the project happen. Zahra may not be able to play there, but her story has inspired something beautiful that other children will enjoy for many years to come.

The playground is scheduled to be dedicated in May

    Zahra movie in the works

The story of Zahra Baker’s murder is about to become a feature film. Independent film producers have teamed with a local screenwriter known as Douglas Whittington who penned “The Last Autumn …. The Zahra Baker Story,” in January.

The story is, “based on real facts of the case, from public records and newspaper articles,” according to a media release issued by producer Dorothy Houston. “This is a story in honor of Zahra Baker, to be told nationally, in hope to raise awareness of such horrific abuse, to bring attention to the importance and help improve laws regarding such horrible crimes against children.”

Ralph Singleton has signed on to produce and direct the movie. Singleton has produced several movies including “Because of Winn-Dixie,” “Last Man Standing” and “Clear and Present Danger.” He was an assistant director on multiple films including “Taxi Driver,” “Three Days of the Condor” and “Death Wish.”

Maxann Crotts-Harvey will be producing as well. Crotts-Harvey is best known as a casting director and has cast actors in nearly 40 films including, “Juwanna Mann,” “The Patriot” and “Black Dog.”

Dorothy Houston owns Connections Model & Talent of Hickory. She’s producing on “The Last Autumn” as well.

The movie is in pre-production. The producers are finding financial backers, scouting locations and starting casting. Filming will be in North Carolina and it’s slated to begin in October and November of this year.

Crew resumes are being accepted and can be submitted to thelastautumnmovie@Gmail.com. Casting dates have not been announced.

The film’s producers plan to donate a percentage of the proceeds to charity.

Fucking useless POS that dont want to work and steal stuff piss me off let alone a murdered childs memorial thats about as low as you can get
COUNTY, NC (WBTV) - It is a quiet spot along a rural road in Caldwell county. "A sacred place to the people of Caldwell County," said one man. It is where the first remains of Zahra Baker were found in 2010 and the first confirmation that the ten year old girl was indeed dead.
A memorial was built on the spot by property owners Jake and Pricsilla Icenhour and since then people have left momentos, notes and other items. Monday night someone stopped by and instead of leaving something, an angel statue and a family bible wrapped in plastic were taken.

"I can't imagine why anyone would do that, "said Priscilla as she looked at the memorial Wednesday morning. "Just what the world is coming to it seems, "said Jake.

It is not the first time something has been stolen from the memorial. In February another angel statue was taken. The Icenhours hoped that was the end of the thief problem but Tuesday they noticed the other items missing.
    [...]
Earl Owens said it was like desecrating a grave site and doesn't understand how anyone could do it. "I'd be afraid the Lord would punish me for doing something like that."

Authorities have no suspects but want anyone with information to call them. Deputies on patrol will watch the site and people who live in the area are being asked to watch for anything suspicious.

Jake said the memorial will stay in place no matter what happens. Anyone is welcome to come by he said and leave a momento behind if they wish. He is asking whoever stole the items to return them.

Zahra park nearly done, ribbon cutting Saturday

The grand opening of the new Hickory playground inspired by and named after Zahra Baker will be on Saturday at 11 a.m.

Buzz Bakewell Jr., of Morganton-based Protect it First, spent Thursday morning making some final preparations to the park’s equipment at the Zahra Baker All Children’s Playground.

The Protect it First crew applied a long-lasting anti-microbial spray to all of the surfaces that children will come in contact with.

“What drew us here is the horrific nature of this crime and the fact that we’ve got a product that will help protect these kids,” Bakewell said. “We did this at no cost to anybody.”

The crew recently returned from Chicago where they applied their product, known as Sterile Coat, to the White Sox facilities including the team’s training room and locker room.

If an adult or child with a cold touches any of the treated surfaces, the chemicals are designed to break down any microbes left behind. The surfaces are safe to eat off after the application is dry and the coating is expected to continue working for two to four years, Bakewell said.

The cost for applying Sterile Coat to the Zahra Baker playground would normally run about $3,500, he said.

The community is invited to attend the ribbon cutting ceremony at the Kiwanis playground at 805 6th Street SE, Hickory, NC 28602. A celebration will be held immediately following the ribbon cutting ceremony.

“We are looking forward to the official ribbon cutting. The time has now come to get the playground open for the children to enjoy it,” said Steve Aaron, a Western Catawba County Kiwanis Club member and a co-chair of the Zahra Baker All Children’s Playground Campaign. “This facility is the first public playground in this area that allows all children to be able to play together.”

The playground amenities accommodate special needs and handicapped children. The facilities include a 50-foot slide, a play web with interactive features, a sand area and much more.

The community, businesses, foundations and grant funds have collectively donated more than $200,000 for the playground for Zahra. The community effort was spearheaded by the Kiwanis Clubs of Catawba County.

Police: Skull found last year is that of Zahra Baker

    HICKORY, N.C. —
A skull found in April 2012 is that of Zahra Baker, Hickory police said.

The skull was found in Caldwell County, off Winkler Way near Highway 268. Police said the State Bureau of Investigation notified them on Wednesday that it was Zahra’s remains.

Zahra, 10, was reported missing in October 2010. Soon after, police began investigating her disappearance as a homicide. Some of the girl's remains were found weeks later.

Zahra’s stepmother, Elisa Baker, pleaded guilty in 2011 to second-degree murder in the girl’s death. She was sentenced to a maximum of 18 years in prison.

Police said Thursday that the examination of the skull didn’t provide any further details on how Zahra was murdered.

"This information gives the members of 'Team Zahra' mixed emotions," said Police Chief Tom Adkins. "It brings up the tragedy of Zahra's death and the life she lived before she was killed, but it also gives us and the community a sense of finally bringing her home."
"Our county and all the folks who worked on this case are reminded of the days spent trying to find Zahra. She will be in our memories for the rest of our lives,” Caldwell County Sheriff Alan Jones said.

Police said the remains will be returned to the appropriate family members.
