Police accuse Oklahoma City couple of abusing son of woman deployed to Afghanistan

Police arrested an Oklahoma City couple on complaints of child abuse by a caretaker after doctors found injuries consistent with abuse on a 1-year-old whose mother is deployed to Afghanistan.
Gabriel Brian Solis, 29, and Elsa Solis, 30, who were legal guardians of the child, were booked into Oklahoma County jail Friday and later released on bail, jail records show. They have not been formally charged.
A doctor at The Children's Hospital at OU Medical Center called police about 11:05 p.m. Thursday and said the 1-year-old boy, whose name was not released, was taken to the hospital by paramedics after vomiting and having a five-minute seizure, according to a police report released today.
The boy had a subdural hematoma, broken left shoulder, lacerated liver, punctured lung with blood in his abdomen and a large bite mark on his left thigh, the report states. The doctor told police almost all the boy's ribs were broken and in various stages of healing, and he had bruising on his face, back and legs. The boy also had bruising on his chest indicating he had been squeezed.
The boy remained hospitalized today, police Sgt. Jennifer Wardlow said.

Police Master Sgt. Gary Knight said today the mother has been notified about her son's hospitalization.
Elsa Solis told police she and her husband became friends with the boy's mother when the boy's mother and Gabriel Solis were both stationed at Hickam Air Force Base in Hawaii. The boy's mother asked the couple to be legal guardians of her son when she learned of a pending deployment to Afghanistan.

The report lists Gabriel Solis as an active duty member of the military, and Elsa Solis told police her husband is stationed at Tinker Air Force Base. Tinker spokesman Ron Mullan said he was not able to verify Solis' rank or duty status today because he and other base public affairs personnel were out of the office because of the Columbus Day holiday.
The boy's mother left for Afghanistan in June, shortly after the Solises left Hawaii following Solis' transfer to Tinker, the report states. The Solises spent about a month in California visiting relatives this summer with the boy and their own two children before moving to Oklahoma City.
Elsa Solis told police the bruise on the left side of the boy's face came from falling on a toy, but she could not explain the rest of the injuries. She said the boy did not have the injuries before paramedics took him to the hospital.

The Solises were arrested after being interviewed at police headquarters, the report states. Police have not said how they think the boy got the injuries.

The 1-year-old and the Solises' 7-year-old son and 4-year-old daughter were taken into protective custody, according to the report.

Reportedly brought in to the OU Medical Center children's hospital by paramedics, it turned out the little one was suffering from far more than just vomiting and a five minute long seizure.

The boy was under the care of Gabriel and Elsa Solis until the hospital visit. His mother apparently met Mr. Solis while the two were stationed at Hickam Air Force base in Hawaii. The mother deployed to Afghanistan in June, and asked the Solises to become legal guardians to her son when she was given the deployment orders.

The Solises were both arrested after questioning on an abuse complaint, and their children were removed from their home along with the boy.

This poor baby has been enduring this crap since June. All his ribs broken. Broken shoulder. Lacerated liver. These POS should be deeply ashamed of themselves. Gabriel and Elsa. Huh!

They may try to blame it on their kids, or on their relatives, but the bottom line is they had no business taking on someone else's child in trust if they couldn't do better than this. I hope Gabriel (talk about a misnomer) gets subjected to some military justice along the way. And Elsa (Bitchtress) better be ready when that child's mother comes back.

I spent about 5 minutes just staring at the screen. What in the heck is it about biting babies thighs? I love nibblin on baby toesies, but to actually BITE, that is beyond my comprehension. Can anyone enlighten me about this? Im serious, and would appreciate it. And you know that this is totally freakin out moms that have been deployed. Its not like the military gives a shit where you put your kids, when they call you, you have to go. And sometimes what you had in place falls through. Can you imagine that mindfuck to deal with , worried about your babies, and keeping your ass safe til you get home?

There is no mention of the baby's father. He was not in his life? That's my assumption, otherwise, why would you leave the kid with another family. Perhaps Gabriel is baby daddy and baby is the red headed affair child?

Tinker Air Force Base officials have placed on limited duty an airman arrested on suspicion of abusing a 1-year-old boy whose mother is deployed.

Senior Airman Gabriel Brian Solis, 29, is performing only administrative duties for his unit, the 72nd Security Forces Squadron, pending the outcome of the criminal investigation into the abuse, base spokesman Ron Mullan said. Solis normally participates in security patrols and other police-like functions on base.

Solis and his wife, Elsa Solis, 30, were arrested Friday after doctors found significant injuries on the boy, whose mother is an airman deployed to Afghanistan, Oklahoma City police said. They were released from the Oklahoma County jail after posting bail and have not been charged. . . .

It is unclear whether the victim's mother is still abroad or has been able to join her son at The Children's Hospital at OU Medical Center in Oklahoma City. . . .

Nicolas Carbajal remained in good condition Tuesday at OU Medical Center, a hospital spokeswoman said.

Air Force investigators will aid city police in their investigation, but the alleged crimes took place off base grounds and thus outside of their jurisdiction, Mullan said. . . .

The wife of a Tinker Air Force Base airman accused of beating a 1-year-old boy in 2010 pleaded guilty Friday to enabling child abuse.

Elsa Solis, of Oklahoma City, entered her plea without the benefit of a deal with prosecutors and faces up to life in prison when she is sentenced Nov. 30 by Oklahoma County District Judge Cindy Truong.

This is probably the cause of his plea. Didn't want to hear his own child testify to his actions. (If we're generous, maybe he didn't want to put his child through the court procedure, but I have difficult believing a man who cared that much would have hurt another child with his child as a witness.)

A judge sentenced a woman Friday to 35 years in prison for enabling the abuse of a 1-year-old boy left in her care while his mother was deployed overseas.

Elsa Solis, 30, stood by while her military husband severely beat the child, the judge said.

“You knew, you were present and you still don't take responsibility,” Oklahoma County District Judge Cindy Truong told Solis, who pleaded guilty in September to a charge of enabling child abuse.

The judge considered sentencing Solis to probation, but changed her mind after considering court transcripts and an interview in which her 6-year-old son told detectives his mother watched as Gabriel Solis punched the 1-year-old repeatedly.

Elsa Solis testified Friday that she didn't recall ever seeing her then-husband abuse the boy.

“You called your son a liar,” Truong said. “You don't deserve to be a mother.”

Gabriel Solis, 31, of Del City, also appeared before Truong on Friday and attempted to withdraw the Alford plea he entered in September for a child abuse charge.

Under an Alford plea, a defendant accepts a sentence for a crime while still asserting innocence. The former Tinker Air Force Base airman admitted in court papers that sufficient evidence exists for a jury to convict him.

When Truong asked Gabriel Solis whether he was attempting to withdraw his plea because he was told the length of his ex-wife's sentence, he said “no.”

The judge then asked defense attorney Jason Lowe whether he told Gabriel Solis about the woman's sentence. The attorney said “yes.”

Lowe withdrew as his attorney, citing a conflict of interest. The judge will appoint a public defender to represent Gabriel Solis and set a Dec. 7 court date to consider the motion to withdraw his plea.

Gabriel Solis, who was fired in September by the Air Force, faces up to life in prison if Truong rejects the motion and decides to sentence him.

Eyvette Carbajal, the child's mother, had placed her son in the care of Gabriel and Elsa Solis and made them legal guardians before she left the base in Hawaii where she and Gabriel Solis had been stationed, police said.

Carbajal, 23, is stationed at Fairchild Air Force Base near Spokane, Wash., where she works as police officer. She said her son, who is almost 3, is “doing fantastic” and shows no lingering physical effects from his injuries.

She said she and the couple once did everything together, often walking into each other homes without knocking.

“We were that comfortable with each other, which makes her betrayal even more devastating,” Carbajal said.

Elsa Solis testified that her ex-husband verbally and physically abused her during their marriage, saying she was psychologically damaged as a result.

Elsa Solis' attorneys asked the judge for mercy, saying she took responsibility by entering a guilty plea in September.

“She's shown remorse for this,” attorney Johnny Lombardi said.

The defendant apologized to Carbajal, saying she was sorry she couldn't protect her son.

“I couldn't do it,” she said. “I tried really hard.”

Prosecutors saw it differently.

“This mother trusted her with her most prized possession — her son,” Assistant District Attorney Pamela Stillings told the judge. “She didn't stand up for little Nicholas, who couldn't stand up for himself.”

I don't think so. Maybe you had the sense to call 911 when he had a seizure, but you did nothing to prevent the abuse before that. Nor did you try to get his various broken bones or injuries taken care of before he was in crisis. Your own son, who testified you watched, didn't mention any protests on your part or any actions taken to shield the baby. The BABY, you freakin' bitch! Who the hell punches babies?!! And who the hell can stand aside and let it happen?
