LAWTON, Okla. – The local man charged with child abuse, after his girlfriend's 2-year-old son was hospitalized with a skull fracture and two black eyes wants his version of the story told. And although Antonio Maldonado, 23, is still inside the Comanche County Jail, he has found a way to get his story out.
7News reporter Sylvia Corkill received a letter from Maldonado, written from jail, explaining how the boy was injured. It was, however, only two pages long and did not explain exactly how the little boy was so badly injured. Maldonado says he cannot provide an explanation on how the child was hurt, but could give some insight on how the injuries could have happened.
Whatever the story, Maldonado says he is innocent and that there is more to his case than what has been told through the media. He says for some time he has noticed marks or bruising appearing on the boy's body and was not sure where they were coming from. He goes on to say his girlfriend, the mother of the child, has always told people the child bruises easily.
In fact, when the child was eventually taken to the hospital, his mother explained to doctors that the marks on his arms, face, and bottom were caused by family pets. Maldonado claims he and his girlfriend would take notice of the marks each time the boy returned from his grandmother's care.
As far as the boy's severe head injury, Maldonado claims he has no idea how that could have happened. He says the accusation that he maliciously struck the child is extremely bothersome to him, because he never beat the child and says he can prove it. He says it is unfortunate that people choose only to believe the medical doctor's evaluation of how the child could have sustained his injuries.
Maldonado goes on to say he just wants a fair trial and that his girlfriend is his heart and always will be and is a wonderful mother.
