No emotion and any she does show, seems totally forced and why in the fuck, would the cartel, take your husbands dead body away and keep it?? Please tell me, I am not the only one thinking this because it seems really obvious to me. If I was the cop and she was telling me to look on land, I would keep searching the water.

I don't think she's lying. Blood pattern on her life jacket and a witness back her up.

Zapata County Sheriff Sigifredo Gonzalez Jr. detailed some of the reasons he does not doubt that David Hartley, a 30-year-old Loveland native, was murdered a week ago by a drug gang on Falcon Lake, a 44-mile long waterway bisected by the U.S.-Mexico border.
It goes to show that not everyone reacts the same in all stressful situations. In interviews of her I saw right after the murder, she was crying hysterical.

Dakota - thank you for the link to that news article. At first, when i saw those videos, i called "bullshit" on her whole story. Then i read the article you linked to and that certainly changed my mind on it. It seems like a very outrageous story, but sometimes truth is stranger than fiction. If she is telling the truth (and i am inclined to believe that she is) then my heart goes out to her - what a horrible way to witness your loved one die. i was glad to hear her say that she has a lot of support because she is certainly going to need it.
I do not care if she is lying or not, so long as this incident can be successfully utilised to increase border security.

I've been following this story for the past couple of days and I think she either killed him, had him killed OR he is waiting for her to ca$h in the in$urance policy ..
Maybe this story should be moved to the Crime section ..

Sheriff: Pirates shoot US man in Mexican waters
An American tourist was shot in the back of the head in Mexican waters on Thursday after being ambushed by armed boaters, a Texas sheriff said. It happened near the U.S. boundary of a lake where run-ins with pirates already had fishermen and Texas officials on alert.
Zapata County Sheriff Sigifredo Gonzalez identified the victim as David Michael Hartley, 30. Hartley and his wife were riding personal watercrafts back from Mexico on Falcon Lake when about six gunmen approached in two boats, Gonzalez said. The sheriff said Hartley was shot as the couple sped away at the sight of the boaters.
What happened to Hartley was unclear. Gonzalez said the man's wife tried circling back to pull him from the water, but she was forced to retreat to U.S. waters after being fired upon again.
"They saw them approaching and started revving it up back to the U.S. side," Gonzalez said. "The guys just started shooting at them from behind."
Gonzalez said he has contacted the Mexican consulate and asked them to look for the man. He said there was nothing else he could do.
One of the boats may have crossed the U.S. side of the lake to fire at the woman, said Mike Cox, a spokesman for the Texas Parks & Wildlife Department. The shooting renewed warnings of pirates on Falcon Lake, which is about 60 miles down the border from Laredo and is popular with water skiers and bass fishing.
Earlier this year, several fishermen were robbed at gunpoint on the lake's Mexican side. In those holdups, authorities say the gunmen traveled in the low-slung, underpowered commercial Mexican fishing boats that are familiar in the area. They asked for money, drugs and guns, and took what cash was available, but no one was hurt.
Hartley and his wife moved to McAllen, Texas, from the Mexican border city of Reynosa about five months ago and had planned to returned to their native Colorado in two weeks, Gonzalez said. Gonzalez said Hartley worked in the oil business.
Reynosa has been beset recently with warring drug cartels and Mexican authorities, but Gonzalez said he believed the shooting was a random attack. He has previously chalked up the dangerous waters as the product of fighting between rival Mexican drug gangs.
"I would think that, right now, the prudent boater would want to stay on the Texas side," Cox said Thursday.
Authorities said the shooting happened about 2:45 p.m. Gonzalez said the couple never spoke to the gunmen, and the woman raced her watercraft to the shores of the first lakeside homes she could reach and asked for help. He said they had ridden over to Mexico for sightseeing and to take photos of a famous church in Old Guerrero.
That is identical to what five boaters did in April when authorities say they were approached by men who identified themselves as "Federales" and asked for drugs. Those boaters handed over $200 before the pirates chased them back to U.S. waters.
Violence on the Mexican side of the lake has been climbing for several months, as a fractured partnership between the region's dominant Gulf Cartel and its former enforcers, the Zetas, plunged many of the area's Mexican border cities into violence.
Falcon Lake is a dammed section of the Rio Grande that straddles the border. The border is marked by 14 partially submerged concrete towers that mark the Rio Grande's path before the lake was created in 1954.

Search teams combed the U.S. side of Falcon Lake for David Michael Hartley, 30, whose wife told police he was shot in the back of the head Thursday after being ambushed by gunmen on boats.
The gunmen are suspected pirates who have turned Falcon Lake, a waterskiing and bass fishing hotspot down the border from Laredo, into uneasy waters for fishermen and boaters. There have been at least five reported run-ins with pirates on the lake this year, though prior holdups had never been deadly.
Hartley's fate was unclear. Zapata County Sheriff Sigifredo Gonzalez said 29-year-old Tiffany Hartley fears her husband is dead. She circled back on her Jet Ski to rescue him but had to retreat when she heard bullets whizzing by.
Gonzalez said he had contacted the Mexican consulate to ask them to search for Hartley on its side of the lake.
"I'm not trying to place the blame on her or him," Gonzalez said. "But we've told people not to go over there, and now this happens."

“I think they're all too worried with elections and everything else and anything and everything other than our border,” she said in a shaking voice from the studios of KURV radio, her sister Nikki at times holding her for support.
“They need to have a realization, a wake-up call. ... We need to get people down here. We need to get our Army and military and whoever. We need to double our Border Patrol and take back the lake. Why in the heck do they have that lake? They have most of that lake.”

(CBS) Tiffany Hartley, the wife of missing American David Hartley, said on "The Early Show" Thursday she doesn't believe her husband is alive.
"Unfortunately I don't think he is alive at this time, since we're almost a week since he's been gone. I do believe that possibly they do have him and they're hiding him. And if they would just give us back his body, then we can move on."
Tiffany said she and her husband's family are just trying to survive as they wait, hoping for news that his body has been found.

BROWNSVILLE — Mexican officials stepped up efforts Wednesday to search for the body of a U.S. citizen believed killed by drug gunmen on the binational Falcon Lake, sending in boats and helicopters after calls for action from U.S. officials, including Gov. Rick Perry.
The effort came a day after David Michael Hartley's family criticized the lack of progress. A week after the incident, his body hasn't been found.
The search was stymied because U.S. officials said they could not search Mexican waters. Mexican officials said they hadn't gotten the correct directives, but based on informal searches had doubts about the story.
On Wednesday, Perry called on Mexican President Felipe Calderón and Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano to take charge of the search.
Napolitano said U.S. authorities were working with Mexican officials, who were dredging the reservoir Wednesday.
The search is to continue today.
The Mexican Foreign Relations Ministry issued a statement saying said Mexican authorities “from the first moment” have been in contact with their U.S. counterparts to coordinate the search, and noted that Mexico has “stepped up (its) actions with the support of specialized personnel, boats and helicopters.”
Asked about claims that the incident could be other than reported, Napolitano said “speculation is unwarranted” in the case.
She said her office also is working with the local sheriff, who like Perry has criticized the federal government for not doing enough.
Perry, a Republican running for re-election in November, repeatedly has bashed the Obama administration for not sending enough resources to the U.S.-Mexico border.

The drug war is bad around the southern border. The lake is used to smuggle drugs back and forth. If they (drug pirates) believe that the husband and wife were from rival drug families or even if they were LE, they'd shoot. Anybody that crosses into their territory is shot. That's how ruthless it is down there.
I'm sure you've heard of the drug lords killing reporters and photographers in mexico because of reporting of crimes, it's extremely plausible that this woman is telling the truth.

I will see if I can find a video (so far no luck) that I saw on TV news this morning. It is a dashcam of the police stop of the Hartleys hours before they hit the lake (for bad lights or license or something on jet ski trailer).
In the video, David explains to the officers where they are going and what they will be up to. It fits the wife's story as well as the time line she's given all along.
off to search.... It would help if I could remember which broadcast I saw it on. (I'm a morning news junkie even on Saturdays).

And they hired the pirates to chase them on the lake that the witnesses saw? Nah... I don't see that scenario.
Given that there have been at least 3 previous attacks (although none fatal) by pirates on the lake, I don't see the story as impossible.

I really didn't think she was... was just putting that out there because I have heard of that shit before (people faking a death for money). And who knows, maybe there isn't even a life insurance policy.
I couldn't imagine how terrible this must be for her then. Hope they find his body so they can bring him home.
I'm wondering why people are doubting her. Natural tendencies, I suppose, but as more and more comes out it seems obvious to me that all the evidence is lining up just as she said it happened. Mexico stated a doubt but now seems to have changed it's tune.
