Crazy bee man shoots 3, kills 1, and is still at large

    http://www.google.com/hostednews/ap/...ocId=D9IN4CQG0

CROWN POINT, Ind. — Authorities asked for the public's help Thursday finding a disheveled gunman who fatally shot a man and wounded two others in rural parts of Illinois and Indiana.

Investigators said the assailant approached his victims with strange questions, asking one man about honeybees and another about construction material, then pulled out a gun.

Sheriff Roy Dominguez said the shootings appeared to be random.

"We don't know what might have precipitated this rampage," he said.

Police had not received any reports about the gunman since Tuesday, when he killed a 45-year-old man near Beecher, Ill., about 35 miles south of Chicago, then wounded another man in the same area. He later shot a 64-year-old farmer near Lowell, Ind., about 10 miles east of Beecher.

Kaupas said his department has received more than 50 tips, but most failed to turned up any solid leads.

"We need the help of our citizens to solve this," the sheriff said. "He didn't just fall out of the sky. He's here."
Here's a composite sketch of this crazypants...

This composite sketch provided Thursday Oct. 7, 2010 by Lake County Police Department shows the suspect in Tuesday's random shootings at a work site in Illinois who ended about an hour later across the state line on an Indiana farm. The suspect, described as heavyset, unkempt and mentally unbalanced, is thought to be driving a 1990s Chevrolet pickup with a loud muffler. Authorities say the suspect asked about honeybees before shooting three men, one of them fatally, in rural areas of Illinois and Indiana.(AP Photo/Lake County Police Department)

I kinda like DV's crazy bee man. He has a come hither look to him! LOL
"The path of the righteous man is beset on all sides by the iniquities of the selfish and the tyranny of evil men. Blessed is he who, in the name of charity and good will, shepherds the weak through the valley of the darkness. For he is truly his brother's keeper and the finder of lost children. And I will strike down upon thee with great vengeance and furious anger those who attempt to poison and destroy my brothers. And you will know my name is the Lord when I lay my vengeance upon thee."

Cop arrested in 2-state shooting spree

CNN) -- A police officer was arrested Friday in Will County, Illinois, in connection with a two-state rural shooting rampage south of Chicago that left one man dead and three others wounded earlier this week, authorities said.

The suspect was identified as Brian E. Dorian, 37, of Crete, Illinois, an officer with the Lynwood Police Department. Dorian was being held on a probable cause warrant, and bail was set at $2.5 million, said Charles Pelkie, a spokesman for the Will County Attorney's Office.

Obviously someone else has access to his Facebook as he would have been unable to make the post shown above. But it's funny! The post discussed in the following article is missing.
If you can believe the Facebook page of a police officer accused of going on a two-state shooting spree, killing one and wounding two others, then he was actually stopped by officers three days ago, who let him go.

Lynwood police Officer Brian E. Dorian, 37, of rural Crete, was arrested at his home shortly after midnight Friday morning by Will County sheriff's police.
    [...]

Will County and Lake County, Ind., sheriff's officials held a news conference Friday to announce the arrest and charges.

At that time, reporters asked about Dorian's Facebook page. It states he was stopped by police in Indiana after the shootings Tuesday. But officers let him go.

When questioned about this Friday during a press conference, Will County and Lake County sheriff's officials and prosecutors declined to comment.

Police, friends saw a change in Dorian after crash that killed 17-year-old
To the people who worked with him and were served by him, Brian Dorian was one heck of a good cop.

Yet, former colleagues and friends said Dorian's personality changed dramatically after he was involved in a crash that killed a teen.

In 2006, Dorian was involved in a crash that killed Dylan D. Drapeau, 17, of Crete. Dorian was never charged with a crime in connection with the accident, but he was cited for speeding.

Police officers who worked with Dorian reacted with shock at the news of his arrest Friday on a murder charge stemming from Tuesday's bistate shootings.

Some said the officer looked confused in his booking mug shot and did not look like the officer who worked alongside them.

Many said that hearing a fellow officer is being charged in connection with the crimes is like a death in the family.

David Palmer, who served as Lynwood police chief from 1994 to 2008, said Friday morning he was shocked and saddened at the news of Dorian being taken into custody in connection with the shootings.

Dorian - a Lynwood native and 1991 graduate of Thornton Fractional South High School in Lansing - served as a police officer under Palmer twice, leaving for a stint as a Lansing officer before returning to the Lynwood force.

Palmer said Dorian was on disability for a bad shoulder for the past year. As an officer, Dorian was one of the best, Palmer said.

Cop released in 'honeybee gunman' case

Hours after Will County prosecutors appeared at a court hearing with a Lynwood police officer charged in a bizarre two-state shooting spree, they set him free Tuesday evening with an apology and the hope that he understands their error.

A relieved Brian Dorian, 37, was released from Will County Jail as local law enforcement officials dropped a murder charge against him and resumed their hunt for a man known as the "honeybee gunman." Dorian had been held in lieu of $2.5 million bail since his arrest Friday morning at his Crete home.

"I feel horrible that Brian Dorian went through this," Will County State's Attorney James Glasgow said. "I certainly would apologize for any inconvenience he has suffered. But at the same time, he is a police officer, and if he were in our shoes ... Brian Dorian would have acted the same way."

Attorneys for exonerated Lynwood police officer Brian Dorian have said he was the victim of a botched investigation by Will County detectives and prosecutors.

However, even after Dorian was freed and the murder charge against him dismissed, Will County law enforcement officials said that many signs pointed to Dorian prior to his arrest, and that he waited until days later to provide a credible alibi.
    [...]

According to Lake County Police Chief Marco Kuyachich, a Lake County detective and Schererville police officer stopped Dorian within an hour of the Lowell shooting because his truck matched the description of the vehicle -- a white or silver Chevrolet pickup truck -- mentioned in an all-points bulletin.

Dorian identified himself as a police officer and was released because police did not have enough information to hold him, Kuyachich said.

Lake County officials have not confirmed the exact time or location of the stop.

Kaupas, in the interview, connected the dots between that stop and Dorian's arrest.

"At one point, a Schererville policeman saw the second sketch and said, 'Hey, that's the guy I stopped right after the shootings,' " Kaupas said.

The Schererville officer called Lake County investigators, who contacted Will County detectives, who pulled Dorian's driver's license photo from an Illinois secretary of state's website.

"We put it in a six-pack, a lineup of six people, and took it to the victim witness (the third worker at the construction site), and we asked him, 'Does anybody on there look familiar?' and he said, 'Yes,' and we said, 'Who?' and he pointed to (Dorian's) photograph but stated, 'He looks older now,' " Kaupas said.

Kaupas said investigators checked the date on the driver's license and discovered the photo was 8 years old.

Throughout the rest of the interview, Kaupas revealed many more details, including the following:

-- Illinois secretary of state records showed Dorian was driving a light blue Chevrolet truck.

"That was No. 2 flag," Kaupas said.

-- While watching Dorian's home, detectives questioned a "lady friend" after she left the house.

"She told us that he did, in fact, have said vehicle that we were looking for and at the present time it was at a shop in Lynwood having new tires put on," Kaupas said. "We knew that day that Lake County had shown some kind of a news reel about them trying to take imprints of the tire tracks out at their shooting scene."

-- She also told police Dorian was "rehabbing his house at the time," Kaupas said. "He had drywall lying around and that kind of stuff and that was the comment that was at the Beecher incident." A relative of Garza's told The Times the gunman asked about scrap wood at the construction site before opening fire.

-- Kaupas said witnesses said the gunman's truck had a loud muffler. Dorian's truck has a custom muffler that resembles a vintage model, Kaupas said.

The Will County state's attorney's office thought there was enough evidence to issue a warrant for his arrest, Kaupas said.

Initially, Dorian could not account for his whereabouts from 10 a.m. to 11:40 a.m. on the morning of the shootings, Kaupas said.

Barry, Will County sheriff's spokesman, told The Associated Press that Dorian didn't provide specifics about what he was doing the morning of the shootings until Tuesday, four days after his arrest.

"You have all this circumstantial stuff -- and he won't tell you ... what he's doing," Barry said. "All Dorian would say is that he was watching TV -- and no further explanation."

During questioning, Dorian initially said he left his home about 11:15 a.m. and previously was on his computer and watched some television, Kaupas said. Comcast couldn't provide details of what channels he watched.

Dorian allegedly said he'd been in Indiana, and records from his phone and cell phone towers showed he was near Cedar Lake at one time, Kaupas said.
    [...]

A Will County officer drove the route Dorian said he took with lights and sirens on at 85 mph as part of the investigation and had the officer calling in on his cell phone at every mile to check connections with cell phone towers.

Meanwhile, investigators took Dorian's computer and showed the activity on the hard drive stopped at 10:10 a.m. on the morning of the shootings.

Once Dorian revealed he had been on the Internet the morning of the shootings, authorities examined his computer and were able to clear him, Barry said.

Kaupas said that further investigation showed someone was using the computer at 10:25 a.m. on sites that require passwords. The first shooting, at a work site in Illinois, happened at 10:30 a.m. Ballistics from the gun in both shootings matched, meaning Dorian could not have been involved in the later one, authorities have said.

The relief that accompanied last week's arrest in the mysterious shooting of three people along the Illinois-Indiana border is gone, and the wanted posters are going back up.

Beecher's 4,000 residents, who breathed easier after the arrest last week of a police officer, have found themselves once again looking suspiciously on strangers and keeping their eyes out for the 1990s Chevy pickup truck the shooter reportedly drove.
    [...]

As the realization sank in that the gunman remains at large and could strike again, the manhunt kicked back into high gear in the border area, which is scattered with small villages and separated by miles of undulating farm fields.
    [...]

More worrying in this case, she said, is that the shooter may be emboldened by the false accusations against the police officer, Brian Dorian, who was cleared after detectives verified that he'd been home logged onto his computer on the morning of the attacks -- and thus couldn't have played a part in them.

Dorian's arrest may have demonstrated to the gunman that authorities have no good eyewitnesses and no solid physical evidence, such a fingerprints or DNA samples, Zellner said.

"He may think he's successfully getting away with it," she said. "That could encourage him to try again."

This is a good example of how your ass gets condemned prior to a trial. This is scary when you think about how all those circumstances fell together that made him look like the shooter and he wasn't. All you need to do is add one dirty investigator to the mix that is hungry to put someone away and you have an innocent man going to jail for murder. This could happen to anyone.
If I swallow anything evil, put your finger down my throat...

Trail's gone cold for 'honeybee killer'
The tips have slowed, but two dozen investigators in Will County and Northwest Indiana continue to doggedly hunt for a killer.

They say there's reason for hope - police have a vivid description of the gunman who killed a Hammond, Ind., man and and severely wounded two other men Oct. 5 in attacks barely 40 minutes apart on either side of the state line.

Investigators also have three surviving witnesses from the two shootings to help identify the killer, who talked about raising honeybees and obtaining construction supplies before opening fire near Beecher and Lowell, Ind.

But the mistaken arrest of Lynwood police officer Brian Dorian on Oct. 8 sidetracked the investigation.
    [...]

Since then, despite sorting through hundreds of tips, authorities have little to show for their efforts. Police have followed more than 400 leads and tips since the shooting spree, but much about the gunman and the attacks remains unknown - including what may have prompted the shootings.
    [...]

Despite the detailed descriptions given by the survivors, investigators haven't identified any potential suspects. Efforts to match the shootings to other similar attacks also haven't turned up anything solid, police said.

"They've come up with nothing close to this," Will County sheriff's spokesman Pat Barry said. "They're looking at a lot of different things, just trying to find something that fits here."

    Dead Robber Looked At
llinois law-enforcement authorities are looking closely at a would-be robber killed Saturday as the "honeybee gunman" suspect in an October shooting spree that killed one and wounded two others in Illinois and Indiana, sources told the Chicago Tribune.

The robber's vehicle matches the description of the gunman's 1992 light-blue Chevy truck, and the gun used in the Saturday attack at L.A. Tan in southwest suburban Orland Park is a revolver of the same caliber used in the October shootings, sources said Sunday.
    [...]

Investigators plan to send the revolver for ballistics tests to see if it matches the weapon used in the earlier attacks, sources said.

Officials on Sunday identified the would-be robber as Gary Amaya, 48, of Rankin, Ill., a small town about 100 miles south of Chicago.
    [...]

The latest lead for sheriff's police began about 6:30 p.m. Saturday, when a female employee at L.A. Tan called police about an armed man apparently robbing the business. Another woman was using a tanning bed at the time, Orland Park police said in a news release.

Amaya allegedly entered the tanning salon, announced the robbery and pointed a gun at the employee, police said. Amaya allegedly ordered the employee to tie her hands and feet with rope he had brought, police said.

Minutes later, a male customer came for his appointment. Amaya changed his target and aimed his gun at the new customer, then ordered him to tie his hands together, police said.

For reasons that remain unclear, the customer was able to grab the gun, which prompted Amaya to move aggressively toward the customer, police said. That's when the customer shot Amaya, hitting him twice, authorities said. Amaya was taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, where he died at 7:30 p.m., police said.

The incident was captured by a surveillance camera, police said. The male customer, whom police would not name, was released without charges. Keating said the man wants to remain anonymous.

Dead guy's gun matches that of the "Honeybee Killer"

Gary Amaya driver's license photo and a police sketch of the "Honeybee Killer"
The ballistics tests on the .38 caliber revolver found at the scene of an Orland Park tanning salon attempted robbery reveal it was the same gun used in the Oct. 5 shootings in Beecher and Indiana that left one man dead and two injured, a Chicago news station is reporting.

Police tests showed the gun of Gary Amaya, 48, of Rankin, who was killed in the weekend robbery attempt, was the same used in the shootings and authorities are searching his home, suspecting he may be the "honeybee killer," WBBM CBS- 2 news said a police source told them.

In Rankin, shocked residents of the close-knit small town said Amaya stood out as a loner.

For a town that has "less than 600 residents, including cats and dogs," according to Rankin Mayor Aaron Warren, Amaya's lack of contact with neighbors was remarkable.

"We've never had anything like this here," Warren said.

Amaya moved to the town about a decade ago to look after his elderly mother, and stayed after she died of cancer a couple of years ago, said Lynn Magers, who runs the town's post office.

"He seemed so normal -- if you saw him you wouldn't think there was anything unusual about him," she said, adding that Amaya worked as a truck driver.

But neighbors on Amaya's street, opposite a snow-covered corn field, said they almost never saw him.

"He mowed the lawn on Sundays and that was it," Debbie Osborn said. "I don't think I even saw his lights on at night."

Staff at the town's two bars also knew nothing of him until Monday morning.

Amy Hofbauer, who runs Boone's Firehouse on the town's quaint Main Street, prides herself on knowing everyone in town, but when a UPS deliveryman came into her bar last week asking for directions to Amaya's house, "I'd never even heard of him," she said.

The town's only police officer, Tim Condon, said he'd never been called to Amaya's home, while sources said he had no police record whatsoever. Police have not been able to find any relatives of Amaya, a source said.

Jason McDaniel disarmed and shot Amaya
during a tanning salon robbery gone bad
(or gone "good" - depending on which side
of the bullet you are on)
Amaya was killed during a struggle with a customer at L.A. Tan. Jason McDaniel said Amaya was eerily calm as he aimed his revolver at McDaniel's chest.

McDaniel, 29, said he tried to reason with Amaya, offering him $600 in cash -- his holiday bonus -- that he received at work earlier that day, and telling him about his 15-month-old baby girl.

"I don't care about any of that (expletive)," Amaya allegedly told McDaniel. "Get back here. I'm going to tie you up."

As the gunman leaned down to reach for rope in his bag, he set the revolver on a counter. McDaniel said he saw his chance.

"I just ran at him really fast, kind of rushed him," McDaniel said.

He elbowed Amaya under his chin. The gunman backed up, but didn't fall. "I went to go shoot him, boom," McDaniel said.

But the gun didn't go off. Amaya lunged at McDaniel, who said he then hit the gunman across the forehead with the weapon and split his head open. A shot went off but McDaniel said he couldn't recall if it hit the gunman.

Dazed, Amaya staggered and began falling toward McDaniel. "So I shot him again in the stomach, and that's when he fell," McDaniel said.

Amaya was pronounced dead about an hour later, at 7:30 p.m.

"I was just in attack mode, a mode to just protect myself and everybody else," McDaniel said. "My daughter's everything to me. I wanted to make it home."

Nick Patel, who operates the tanning salon, praised McDaniel's actions and is giving him a $5,000 reward and free lifetime tanning for him and his wife.

"We're fortunate. We were blessed to have customers like that," Patel said.

He said he was stumped by the attempted robbery.

"I just was shocked," Patel said. "Most of our transactions are on credit card. (Stores) don't have a lot of cash money."

The dude was just a one man psycho crime spree.

A handbag stolen from a Chicago prostitute Saturday morning has been found in the possession of suspected “honeybee” killer Gary Amaya, police sources say.

Unemployed truck driver Amaya, 48 — shot dead by a customer during a botched attempted robbery at an Orland Park tanning salon Saturday evening — is already suspected of the Oct. 5 honeybee shootings in rural Will County and Lake County, Ind.

The handbag theft was reported to Chicago Police on Saturday morning by the victim, who has a history of prostitution arrests, the source said. She told officers a man approached her on the 3100 block of West Chicago in Humboldt Park at 9 a.m. Saturday and told her to “give it up,” before snatching the bag and taking off in a beat-up pick up truck.
