Mattaya Bowie And Jeremy Johnson Ignored Pleas To Get Help For Little Mattasia

A mother who ignored the pleas of family and friends to take her critically injured daughter to the hospital was charged Wednesday with child neglect, and the mother's boyfriend was charged with abuse.

The 3-year-old child, Mattasia Bowie, died early Saturday at Aurora Sinai Medical Center, according to a criminal complaint, which says charges against the mother, Mattaya Bowie, 20, and her boyfriend, Jeremy P. Johnson, 21, may be amended to homicide pending the results of an autopsy.

Johnson told police he brought Mattasia home from day care around 4 p.m. Sept. 30.

The child, he told police, ran into her bedroom and he heard a "thump." He said, according to the complaint, that he found the girl crying on top of a pile of toys. He said Mattasia wouldn't stop crying, so he slapped her. When that failed to quiet her, he said, he grabbed the front of her shirt and threw her against a wall.

When Bowie returned home from work, he told police, he told her Mattasia had fallen on some toys.

Johnson's brother, however, told police that he heard Johnson beating the child earlier in the week.

Mattaya Bowie's grandmother told police she saw Mattasia on Friday and told Bowie she believed the child appeared to have suffered a serious head injury. The grandmother begged Bowie to take the child to the hospital and even offered to pay cab fare. Bowie refused.

A friend of the mother told police that she visited the home late Friday, and that Bowie showed her the child's injuries. Bowie noticed that the child was sleeping deeply and that her breathing appeared labored.

Bowie told the friend that the child had taken a sleeping pill. The friend told police she insisted that Bowie and Johnson call 911.

When they refused, she had Bowie get the child dressed and then drove them to the hospital.

The child was pronounced dead shortly after they arrived.

Bowie told police her daughter might have taken a methadone pill that was left on a table.

Johnson told investigators the little girl injured her head when she fell onto a doll house. He also said he threw the child into a wall because he was angry that she would not stop crying.

The great-grandmother of a 3-year-old girl who was killed over the weekend told 12 News she was concerned about the child the last time she saw her.

WISN 12 News learned on Tuesday that Mattasia Bowie had head injuries hours before she was taken to a Milwaukee hospital, where she died.

Sallie Bowie, the great-grandmother, was helping raise Mattasia until she and and her mother moved out a few months ago.

Sallie Bowie said she became increasingly worried about the man the mother was living with.

Police and the district attorney are still investigating of what happened at Mattasia's south side home on Friday, but 12 News has learned she went to her great-grandmother's house with her mother Friday night with visible head injuries.

"Her head up here was swollen. And her eye, was like someone had cut it, and she couldn't raise it. And, that's when I told her (the girl's mother), 'Take the baby to the doctor,'" Bowie said.

Mattasia's mother had recently moved out of her grandmother's house to live with her 21-year-old boyfriend.

The mother did take Mattasia to Sinai Hospital, but she died early Saturday. The mother's first call was to her grandmother, who had raised her.

"She says, 'Granny, don't try to come down here.' I said, 'Why?' She said, 'Mattasia is gone, and I don't want to live.' I said, 'What are you talking about she's gone?'" Bowie said.

Even though this turned out to be too late, I applaud this woman, who didn't just say "call 911", she acted when the two POS refused. If only someone had called earlier. WTF is wrong with Bowie that she can't see what's right in front of her face?!!

All these stupid mother fuckers coming out to say what they saw before this child died should be horse whipped for failing miserably to save this baby. That's not to say that the whore mother is exempt from any guilt, cause not only did she allow this to happen, she refused to get immediate help. Those two should just suffer to no end.

Wake the fuck up people and do something when you see a child being hurt. GRRR

No one should ever have to utter those words. If you ever do, CALL 911 AND CPS. I wouldn't even trust my own kid to do it if they were stupid enough to show me my grandchild in that condition.

First, I don't understand why the hell anyone thinks hitting a child is going to make them stop crying. Pain = hurting = more crying. You can't hurt fear into a toddler and expect them to shut up. Dumb motherfucker.

Second, I don't understand why the grandmother didn't call an ambulance, the police, the firetrucks, life flight, DHS, CPS, SRS, and the fucking SWAT team when the mom refused to take the baby to the hospital. If she was my daughter, I'd have went upside her damn head and took that baby myself.

She didn't want to take her baby to the hospital 'cause she was protecting her POS boyfriend. And the baby killer, he hits the child as she cry's not in hopes to quiet her but to let out his frustration. I don't think people like this who realize they are causing injury give two shits. It's all about their needs. No surprise there. I'm assuming there were no visible injuries from the injuries inflicted earlier in the week or the daycare would have said something.

This child had been beat prior as his own brother tells the police. I wonder how old his brother is? he sure seems a lot brighter than this fucker. And big time praise that he tell the police what he saw.

Prosecutors have amended the charges against a Milwaukee woman and her boyfriend charged in the Oct. 2 death of the woman's 3-year-old daughter, according to a criminal complaint released Thursday.

Jeremy P. Johnson, 21, is now charged with first-degree reckless homicide in the killing of Mattasia Bowie. He had previously been charged with physical abuse of a child causing great bodily harm.

The child's mother, Mattaya Bowie, 20, is now charged with child neglect resulting in death. She had previously been charged with child neglect causing great bodily harm.

The charges were amended after the Milwaukee County medical examiner's office said Wednesday that the girl's death was a homicide caused by blunt force injuries to her head, with a "significant contributing factor" of methadone intoxication.

Doesn't sound like she phoned any authorities to report the abuse. Do you think she photographed the injuries to have as evidence later so she could keep her granddaughter?
