A Key Largo man has been charged with animal cruelty after he allegedly beat his dog nearly to death Sunday. The black Labrador named "Bubba" almost died of its injuries, according to the Monroe County Sheriff's Office. 33-year-old
Noah Mitchell was jailed on a charge of Animal Cruelty.
"Bubba" almost died of its injuries which include
a collapsed lung, damaged esophagus and fractured ribs. Doctors at South Florida Animal Hospital said if Bubba had been brought in an hour later, he might not have survived.
The dog in is an oxygen tent under observation and is expected to be hospitalized for several more days.
A witness said
Bubba upset Mitchell when he tried to run away. Mitchell caught the dog by the collar, the witness said, and
dragged him so violently inside he damaged the dog's neck and esophagus. Then Bubba grabbed a steak from the kitchen counter.
Enraged, Mitchell allegedly
picked the dog up, slammed it to the ground and then performed a "knee drop" wrestling move on the dog once it was on the ground.
When police arrived Bubba was in a cage, unresponsive. Mitchell was taken to jail, and Bubba was taken to the hospital.
