SANFORD, Fla. -- A Eustis Middle School teacher was arrested and charged with child neglect after his 1-year-old child was found holding onto a fence at the entrance of an apartment complex. The 1-year-old boy, who was wearing only a diaper, was found wandering outside the Pineaire apartment complex on Florida Street in Sanford (see map) Sunday, police said.
Kelly Wilson called 911 after she said she found the child in his soiled diaper walking near the entrance of the complex. Wilson said she was able to feed the baby, change his diaper, provide him with clothes and care for him until officers arrived.
The responding officer walked door-to-door in hopes of finding the boy's parents, but was unable to locate them. The boy was placed with Child Protective Services (CPS).
Police said, around 8:00pm, they received a call about a missing 1-year-old child who was last seen wearing a diaper.
Officers said that when they arrived at a home on El Capitan Street in Sanford (see map), Durand Brown told officers that he was at home watching six children. Durand said, around 6:30pm, he went to the grocery store for approximately 20 minutes and left the 1-year-old with his 12-year-old son and the other children.
When Durand returned home, he began cooking dinner for the children, noticed the baby was gone and then called 911. Investigators were contacted by CPS and were notified that they had the baby.
Officers determined that the 1-year-old disappeared when Durand was home around 7:30pm and failed to check on the child when he returned from the store. Durand was placed under arrest and taken to John E. Polk Correctional Facility and charged with child neglect without great harm. He was given a $2,000 bond.
