KANSAS CITY, MO - A couple is in custody and police in Kansas City, Missouri, are investigating a possible case of child abuse after a 2-month-old baby boy was taken to the hospital with two broken legs.
According to police, the child's mother, 22, took the baby to the emergency room on Tuesday night because the child's thighs were swollen. Police say the mother told doctors and detectives that she wasn't sure how the baby was hurt. The mother told police she first noticed the baby's swollen legs on Monday morning, and by Monday night, she says the baby became cranky and restless.
On Tuesday, the mother described her son's legs as crooked, unlike a normal child's legs should be, while the baby's father, 23, told police he was unaware of the situation until the mother told him about it Tuesday night.
X-rays revealed that both of the child's femurs had been fractured.
"Her boyfriend it appears also was possibly in care of the child, so we'll have to talk to both of them and figure out when the injuries happened and who may have had care custody and control of the child at that time," said Capt. Rich Lockhart of the Kansas City, Missouri, Police Department.
The identity of the parent's have not yet been publicly released. The Missouri Department of Social Services has taken custody of the injured baby, who is being treated at Children's Mercy Hospital, and his 1-year-old sister.
