One day after a Cook County jury returned a guilty verdict on one of the two men accused of killing DePaul University student Francisco Valencia, his mother pleaded with Chicago parents to keep their children from joining street gangs.
"These gang members choose a life of risk," said Joy McCormack. "Sadly they made that choice for our son too."
Berly Valladeres was convicted of murder for providing the gun that was used to kill Valencia outside a Logan Square home that had been rented for a party. The alleged shooter, Narcisco Gaticca is still awaiting trial.
"Frankie was killed outside a million dollar home," McCormack told reporters. "If this could happen to us, it could happen to you, to anyone."
With her partner on one side and her son, Victor, on the other, McCormack pleaded with parents of gang-age children.
"If someone had taken the time to save [Valladeres], perhaps Frankie would be alive today," she said.
