Savannah Pickett, Mother Of Abused 5Mth-Old Arrested In Death

DECATUR - Police in Decatur have arrested the teenage mother of Amarrius Rice on a warrant naming her as the killer of the 5-month-old boy.

Savannah G. Pickett, 17, was taken into custody in Decatur on Tuesday in an arrest assisted by the U.S. Marshal Service. She is now being held in the Macon County Jail awaiting further court proceedings.

Amarrius was pronounced dead at Decatur Memorial Hospital in the early hours of Sept. 18. An autopsy revealed he died as a result of multiple injuries and Decatur Police Lt. David Dickerson said Wednesday those injuries were caused by "blunt force trauma to the head and torso, due to child abuse."

    Amarrius Rice
    http://obit.moranandgoebel.com/obitd...&listing=Found
The picture is from his obituary, which states he will be missed by his mother and several other family members.

He looks like a very happy, fiesty little guy. With four women in the home, probably generations of his mother's family, I can't understand how he was allowed to be killed.
    . . .
Amarrius, son of Robert Rice Jr. and Savanna G. Pickett, had been staying at a house in the 2800 block of East Cardinal Drive, according to a police report. Amarrius was born on March 22.

There were four female witnesses listed in an initial police report concerning the boy's death, with ages ranging from 15 to 72 years.

Amarrius was transported to Decatur Memorial Hospital by an ambulance from Decatur Ambulance Service, following a 911 call early Saturday morning.

Day said the boy arrived at the hospital with no signs of life present. Resuscitation efforts were undertaken, to no avail.

The death of Amarrius Rice, a 5-month-old baby who died of multiple blunt trauma wounds allegedly caused by his 17-year-old mother, was ruled a homicide by a coroner's jury on Monday.
    [...]

In the case of Amarrius, who died Sept. 18, Decatur Police Detective Brad Allen testified that Savannah Pickett, the baby's mother, admitted to police that she had dropped and punched her baby, which matched with the injuries that led to his death.

Allen, who attended the autopsy at Springfield Memorial Medical Center, said it was determined that Amarrius died from multiple injuries due to blunt force trauma caused by child abuse. The injuries consisted of multiple skull fractures, a lacerated liver, abdominal bruising and bleeding, bleeding to his kidneys, hemorrhaging to his thymus, bruising of his ribs, bleeding on his brain and hemorrhaging on his spine.

Pickett has confessed to police that she dropped him on the floor, punched him in the stomach and shook him.

Allen said that Amarrius, who had sustained the injuries on Sept. 15 and 16, was cared for by the boy's aunt for the 36 hours prior to his hospitalization. The aunt was the sister of Amarrius' father, Bobby G. Rice.

Rice, 23, an inmate at Jacksonville Correctional Center, was arrested Nov. 6 on a burglary charge. He was later convicted of burglary and aggravated domestic battery, and sentenced to four years, six months in prison. He was incarcerated when the baby was born on March 22, three months before Pickett's 17th birthday.

Allen said the aunt and others at her home told police they did not notice the baby was seriously injured, until he turned purple and stopped breathing. Then he was rushed to Decatur Memorial Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 3:24 a.m. Sept. 18.

    Previous Coverage:
Pickett later told police that she was having a bad night on the previous Wednesday, with feelings of sadness, anger and frustration, according to a complaint for an arrest warrant filed in circuit court.

She said she "dropped Amarrius to the floor and his head struck the floor," according to the document. She told police this occurred "quick and with force," but was accidental.

Pickett also said she punched Amarrius in the stomach five to seven times, "but claimed she punched him in a playful manner." Pickett acknowledged the punches were probably too hard, but did not make her son cry.

She also told police she held Amarrius around his torso, under his armpits, and shook him, causing his head to move back and forth. She did this to "wake her son" so she could talk and play with him.
    [...]

Dr. Ralston reported that it was possible the infant was injured two days earlier and it took two days for them to cause his death.
    http://www.herald-review.com/news/lo...58ce12cb4.html
Under cross-examination, Mattingley asked Allen if officers had asked Pickett if she knew the consequences of shaking a child.

"She indicated she knows you're not supposed to shake a child," Allen said, adding that Pickett said she had previously shaken Amarrius.

According to the autopsy report, the bleeding along the spinal column resulted from the baby being violently shaken.

I can't wrap my mind around punching a baby. Not that I understand shaking a baby, but punching a baby? I've never been pissed off at my son enough to think, you know, a good punch in the face ought to teach him a lesson. Fucking evil bitch.

I can't wrap my head around these cases; I just can't understand it. Babies are so soft and sweet, so innocent and beautiful. (I know I'm a mush about little ones, hell, I even like teenagers). There is something missing in this woman; her youth has nothing to do with it. Many very young women have babies and manage to raise them very well. How the hell can anyone hurt a living creature so helpless and so small? I can't even think of cuss words to describe her, and what's worse, I can't think of a punishment that would penetrate her thick selfish mind.

How right you are. I have friends that were abused as children, and I don't see them punching or shaking their children. How do you look at a tiny baby and decide that hurting him/her is a way to solve the problem? Something IS missing in this woman - her heart.

OH, JFC! WTF is wrong with this woman?!! Oh, it was accidental, but with force? (I'm thinking it was at the very least like that woman in the Australian train station, where she more or less flung her arms out wide, "dropping" the baby. Punched him, maybe too hard, but playfully -- he didn't cry. Yeah, he had his breath knocked out of him at least and couldn't get a cry going. She broke or bruised his ribs, FFS! The shock of that! Lacerated kidneys, abdominal bruising and bleeding, bleeding on the spine! Sure it was playful! Shaking him to wake him! You know I'd buy that if he weren't so bruised, bleeding and abused. I think it's just another weak oh-poor-me excuse.
