Young woman in custody after infant found dead in Saanich
A 20-year-old mother is in custody awaiting criminal charges after her newborn infant was found dead in a Saanich home Monday morning.

Saanich police were called to a home at 3846 Saanich Rd. at 9:30 a.m. yesterday where they found the dead baby. Police spokesman Sgt. Dean Jantzen would not say what gender the child is, and his or her precise age isn’t known. Jantzen described the baby as a newborn but said police are still determining the age.

An autopsy will be done in the next couple of days to determine cause of death.

Police were called to the home overlooking Swan Lake by someone from inside the house, he said. The child was found dead inside.

Meanwhile, the mother is in custody and will likely appear before a justice of the peace this afternoon. The exact charge has yet to be finalized, said Jantzen who called the death “suspicious.”

An interpreter has been brought in to help communicate with the mother, although Jantzen would not say what her first language is.
