GAINESVILLE — Florida safety Jamar Hornsby has been kicked off the football team after being arrested Friday morning on a felony charge of credit card fraud.
Police said Hornsby charged more than $2,800 in six months to a gas card that belonged to a Florida student who died in October.
"He is not part of our program," Florida coach Urban Meyer said in a statement issued Friday night.
Hornsby, 21, turned himself in to police in Gainesville early Friday. He appeared before a judge and was charged with a third-degree felony for fraudulent use of a credit card, and a first-degree misdemeanor for the theft of the card. He was released from jail several hours later.
According to the arrest affidavit, Hornsby allegedly stole a BP gas card from the home of Ashley Slonina on Oct. 12. Slonina, the 20-year-old girlfriend of Florida cornerback Joe Haden, was killed early that morning in a motorcycle accident with Florida football walk-on Michael Guilford. Hornsby reportedly was helping Slonina's family gather her belongings.
