A couple remains behind bars today after the woman allegedly threw hot grease toward her husband, who tried to defend himself by holding his 10-month-old grandson in front of his body, and instead hit the boy and another grandson.
Gainesville Police say Johnnie Allen Hutchinson, 51, and Dorothy Williams Hutchinson, 51, were arguing at about 1 a.m. Sunday morning at their home on Northeast 52nd Street. According to the police report, Dorothy Hutchinson told her husband that, if he didn't leave her alone, she was going to throw hot grease on him. The fight continued, so she picked up a pan of hot grease in the kitchen and approached Johnnie Hutchinson in living room, the report states.
The couple's four grandchildren were asleep in the living room. When Dorothy Hutchinson approached her husband with the hot grease, the report states he picked up the baby and "used him as a human shield and still, the defendant threw the grease."
The baby sustained second-degree burns on his right leg and stomach. Another grandson also was hit with the grease, which caused first- and second-degree burns under his left eye and on the left side of his face.
Dorothy Hutchinson is charged with felony aggravated domestic battery and child neglect. Johnnie Hutchinson is charged with felony aggravated child abuse and knowingly causing disfigurement. They are both being held without bond in the Alachua County Jail.
