Man escapes police custody despite cast on leg and handcuffs
KANSAS CITY, Missouri - Cops are searching for a man who, despite a cast on one leg and handcuffs on his arms, escaped from police custody while he was being taken to jail in Jackson County.
At about 12:30 p.m. Thursday, police were taking Ryshod Mercer, 34, from his arraignment in Jackson County Court to the Jackson County Jail. Mercer was charged with burglary and domestic assault and his bond had just been set at $50,000 cash-only.
Police say Mercer jumped from a moving police car at Truman and Denver in Kansas City, Mo., and ran away. The car was traveling at about 20 miles-per-hour when Mercer jumped from the back seat.
Police say Mercer was allegedly injured during a footchase with Sugar Creek police earlier this week. As a result of those injuries, he had a soft cast on is right wrist and a soft cast on his left leg.
Mercer was handcuffed in the front of his body and his legs were not shackled because of the casts. He was last seen wearing a white hospital gown and blue scrub pants.
Kansas City police helped Sugar Creek officers search for Mercer for a short time, but have since discontinued their search.
