St. Pete police say mom left kids alone in car while she went in store to shoplift
Kids alone in running car for at least 45 minutes
ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. - A St. Petersburg woman left her small children alone in her car while she went into a department store to shoplift, according to police.
It happened at the Bealls on 49th Street North in St. Petersburg Thursday morning, said St. Petersburg Police spokesman Mike Puetz.
Yakeria Smith left her 4-year-old son and 9-month-old son in her car with the engine running while she went into the store, Puetz said. "She was taking clothing and stuffing it down the front of her pants."
Store security detained her and called police. That's when they found the two children alone in the car.
They had been there with the windows cracked and the engine running for at least 45 minutes.
