HIGHGATE CENTER, Vt. -- Vermont police have charged a Highgate Center man with multiple counts of domestic assault after he allegedly admitted to shaking and squeezing his five-month-old twin daughters multiple times.

Jeremy Grant, 24, admitted to police that he shook the babies to keep them quiet, police said.

The charges came after Grant's wife brought the twins to their doctor Wednesday because one of the girls was injured, police said. X-rays revealed the injured baby had a broken clavicle, police said.

The children were then brought to Fletcher Allen Health Care in Burlington, Vt., for full skeletal surveys, after which two more bone fractures were discovered in the first baby and one fracture was discovered in the second baby, police said.

Grant was scheduled to appear in Vermont District Court in St. Albans Friday.

A father from Franklin County is in prison tonight. He will spend the next 18 months behind bars for beating his infant daughters.

25-year-old Jeremy Grant of Highgate walked into Franklin District Court a free man. But that wouldn't last long. He was there to be sentenced for severely beating his 5-month-old twin daughters.

"There's not a day that goes by where I don't feel remorse for what I did," he told the judge.

Grant pleaded guilty to two counts of aggravated domestic assault.

Because both little girls have fully recovered, and Grant has only two minor offenses on his criminal record , prosecutors agreed to a sentence of 18 months to 18 years in prison. Prosecutors say Grant will likely only serve the minimum sentence.

Goddamnit, that effing sucks. I wonder if the mom will let him play daddy again. I know I would NEVER let that man around my children EVER again.

FOX 44 Local News's Michael Henrich interviewed the step-grandmother of the babies at the time. She said Grant was constantly showing up at his ex's house. His conditions of release specifically said Grant was not to come into contact with her, her address, or her children.

"Jeremy did show up at her house Friday night with birthday gifts for her, a scrapbook that he had taken and a forgive me type love letter," she said. "He needs to stop falling through the cracks and not following his conditions."

In July - FOX 44 Local News caught Grant violating another condition of his release. He wasn't allowed to be near anyone under 16...yet he worked at a Burger King.

In court Tuesday, when asked by a judge what he was thinking when he committed the offenses, Grant said he was in over his head, and disgusted with himself.

"I guess I was overwhelmed and stressed out and got to a point where I really didn't know what to do," Grant said.

Grant is back in jail, his pre-trial will be held on December 1. Part of the plea agreement was an eight-month 'self change' rehabilitation program.

The status of the twin baby girls is good. Their mother says the infants are making a healthy recovery, and bones are healing and developing as they should.

That's the part I found most interesting, anyway.
