Deputies Say Drunk Caregiver Dropped Toddler Down Stairs
Union County, NC -- Deputies in Union County say they have arrested a home health nurse after they say she was drunk and dropped a toddler on a flight of stairs.
Melinda Kloppenburg was charged with misdemeanor child abuse. The special needs toddler was hurt, but authorities told WBTV, he will be okay.
Investigators say Kloppenburg blew a .25 blood alcohol level when they arrived at the home where the incident occured. The legal BAL for operating a motor vehicle is .08.
Kloppenburg worked for Bayada Nurses, who let her go after hearing about the incident. They said they were "appalled" by the incident and released the following statement to WBTV:
"Upon our office director discovering the incident, the nurse was immediately fired and reported to the State Department of Health, Board of Nursing and Child Protective Services."
