A Frederick man has been charged with child abuse and assault after police intervened Friday as he allegedly attempted to suffocate his 19-month-old infant son.

Alton Howard Ambush, 33, of the 600 block of Gas House Pike has been charged with with 2nd degree child abuse, 1st and 2nd degree assault, reckless endangerment and resisting arrest after city police responded to a report of domestic dispute at 175 Fairfield Drive.

According to police, Officer Alcorn of the Frederick Police Department’s Patrol Division arrived at the residence at about 5:24 p.m. and was met outside the house by family members of Ambush who screamed that the man was “killing the baby.”

Once inside the house Alcorn found Ambush squeezing the infant to suffocate him, police say.

A number of pleas by the officer to get Ambush to let go of the baby only enraged the man who increased his pressure on the boy, police say. After more police arrived, officers struggled with Ambush and were able to get him to release the child, who had begun to turn blue, police say.

Ambush was taken into custody and admitted to Frederick Memorial Hospital that evening for evaluation to determine his motive.
