Robert Barker "Motivates" His Teen Son (And Usually Wears A Hat)

A Leesburg man is accused of domestic abuse and assault with a firearm for trying to get his teenage son motivated to play football.

Volusia County deputies say Robert Barker was upset with the boy, who the coach sat for half the game, because he complained of feeling dizzy.

"Mr. Barker apparently made him suit up in his pads and his helmet later that day and run what's described as a wind sprint back and forth," said Sgt. Jim Vachon with the Volusia County Sheriff's Office.

"While we can't say for sure he was shooting at him, the victim was in the state of mind that he was about to be shot," Vachon said.

According to the arrest report, Barker said the boy suffered a concussion about three weeks ago but was cleared to play. The boy said he felt dizzy and numb during the game, so his coach decided to give him rest.

Robert Lynn Barker, 41, is accused of using the teen's pellet gun to "motivate" the boy after he fell ill at a football game earlier the same day.
    [...]

Barker reportedly told the teen he needed more conditioning, the arrest report said, so he set up cones about 20 yards apart in the front yard of a home.

Then he ordered the teen to perform sprints while wearing football gear. It was 91 degrees with a heat index of 107 on Saturday, a deputy said in a report.

Either a hat or a clown wig.

I can remember my younger son giving me grief about football practice, didn't wanna pad up, didn't wanna get in the car, didn't wanna get out of the car, didn't wanna participate once he got there, BUT...he agreed to attend all practices and games if not incapacitated or hospitalized and we made sure he understood what that meant. His dad was one of the coaches and dad had rules, too. He was never, ever to coach his own son and football practice was not to be talked about at home. What happened at practice stayed at practice. I made sure this kinda stuff did not happen with my kids!!!

Man charged with child abuse in BB gun incident hospitalized
The Leesburg man charged with child abuse after he allegedly used a BB gun to motivate his stepson to run sprints in the heat last weekend, is in the hospital recovering from an overdose.Dispatch records show Lake County Deputies and EMS responded to an overdose call at 8544 Treasure Island Road about 4 p.m. Tuesday, the same residence where Barker has lived since he was arrested. He was taken to Leesburg Regional Medical Center, but there is no word on his condition.

A woman who identified herself as Barker's mother answered the phone at the address but declined to comment.

A call to Barker's hospital room revealed the 41-year-old suffered from gastro-intestinal bleeding but was set to be discharged later today.

Barker told the Orlando Sentinel Monday he was sorry about the Saturday incident but it was all a misunderstanding. He said the football training exercise was mischaracterized because he mistakenly used a BB gun to "motivate" his 13-year-old stepson.

The BB shots, which are propelled by a carbon dioxide cartridge, alerted a anonymous caller who dialed 9-1-1.

Well, alrighty then. If it was a mistake, did he try to off himself because now the world has seen him without his hat?

"the football training exercise was mischaracterized because he mistakenly used a BB gun"

this whole line is laughable, I was thinking the same Dakota.

So we are all wrong because he made a mistake?? He also mistakingly didn't take enough pills to rid us of him-self forever.
