Jason Carter ran over his 5 yr. old son's leg with a truck & didn't report it

KISSIMMEE, Fla. (AP) - A central Florida father has been charged with child neglect after he allegedly ran over his son's leg with a truck and didn't report it.

Osceola County Sheriff's deputies said Jason Carter was dropping his 5-year-old son off at the school bus stop Thursday when the boy jumped out before he came to a complete stop. Carter said his son was lying on the ground, but wasn't crying and didn't appear to be injured so he placed him on the bus. He said he called the school to alert them his son might have hurt his knee and to call him if the injury got worse.

The boy told the school nurse he fell out of his dad's truck and was run over. A doctor found tire tread marks on the boy's thigh.

Carter told authorities he had been drinking beer before driving his son to school.

    Wow. Just WOW!

Not to insult, but WTF is it with Florida?! Is it the weather? The water? I'm thinking Pgh traffic and an assload of snow doesn't seem all that bad.

Dad's an idiot for drinking and driving, especially that early in the am... but aside from that I don't see the big deal. It doesn't sound like he knew he ran the kid over, he even asked the school to call him if the kid got worse. The kid needs to learn not to jump out of the car before it's stopped.

Child neglect? Really? If the kid was not actually injured, just a bit sore, what is the big deal? (What the hell is the kids bone made of anyway?) I don't think dad knew he actually went over the kids leg, only that he fell out of the car. If the kid said he was fine, was not crying or anything, why would dad take him to the hospital? The man was concerend, he called the school and said if the boy was in pain to let him know.

There is no law that says you cannot have 1 beer and drive your car, no matter the time of day. It is only illegal to be drunk and drive. (I only say it is not illegal, not that it is a good thing to do. Perhaps this man works nights, so he had a beer when he got home? I don't know. But no one bats an eye when a family goes out to dinner, mom has a glass of wine, dad has a beer and they drive home with kids in tow)

The education system here is lacking in areas away from the major cities. There are a lot of country people who are very happy to live simple ignorant lives. I'm generalizing but it's partly true. It's also very populated with a big mix of people.
