Police: Breanna Gering Put The Baby In The Trash And Went Back To Work

A 23-year-old Franklin woman has been arrested by Racine police after she allegedly gave birth at work and then put her newborn daughter in a large metal trash bin, leaving the infant to die.

Breanna Gering works at Perkins restaurant, 4915 Washington Ave. and at 9 a.m. on Aug. 16 she reportedly gave birth in the bathroom there, according to Lt. Ray Knapp. After giving birth, Gering allegedly put her daughter into a bag and into a trash bin behind the nearby Old Country Buffet.

Police said Gering then went back to work.

Knapp said Gering left work that same day to go to Wheaton Franciscan-All Saints hospital, 3801 Spring St., because she was having complications.

Police said Gering initially denied to medical professionals that she had given birth. Officers were called to the hospital at 3 p.m.

After several hours of questioning, Gering reportedly told police where to find the baby in the trash bin. The baby's body was recovered by officers the same day.

Police said an autopsy was performed and the results show that the infant was alive when she was put into the trash bin.
    [...]

Knapp said Gering concealed the pregnancy and told police she didn't know she was pregnant. The Franklin woman also has a 3-year-old child, according to police.

Even if I pretended to believe that she didn't know she was pregnant, how many labor pains does it take to figure it out?

She's charged with First-Degree Reckless Homicide which carries a sentence of up to 60 years.
First-degree reckless homicide is the reckless causing of the death of another human being or unborn child under circumstances which show an utter disregard for human life.

You might can say you don't know you are pregnant, and that you mistook the labor pains for apendicitis, but once that baby pops out, it doesn't look like nothing but what it is, it cannot be mistaken for anything else.

So I don't understand why you would even say you didn't know you were pregant, because that has nothing to do with how you treated the sweet little baby that you obviously just gave birth to. Saying you didn't know you were pregnant does not explain your actions at all.

You know, I was reading the posts above and thinking about the "mother" and, while her actions filled me with disgust and horror, I was imagining how desperate and trapped she may have felt, how terrified, perhaps, of losing her job and the means of supporting her existing child, how maybe poverty and stupidity prevented her from seeing any other way out of her situation. And then I read this line in the journaltimes link:

Johnson said no employees saw Gering put the baby in the trash bin but that Old Country Buffet managers had viewed video of the incident that showed Gering driving up to the bin and placing the baby inside.

She... drove... to the bin. She drove. She didn't stuff the baby into a bag and nip out to the dumpster out the back. She made excuses to her employer, got in her car and drove.

If you look at a map of Racine, you'll see Perkin's Restaurant is 5 blocks from the hospital and maybe 7 or 8 from the fire station. She was a five minute drive from a Safe Haven point. God. Damned. Bitch.

The fact is, if she had come out of the restroom with a baby in her arms, all surprised and traumatised by it, no one in the restaurant, particularly her boss, would have carped about taking her to the hospital and giving her some time off work pronto. She may not have been their favorite employee, she may have just started working there, but there are things that people don't do, and one is expect a newly delivered mother and infant to come back to work.

I was thinking that too, Tundra, most people will bend over backwards to help a new mother especially one that was so surprised, not only would they take her to the hospital but all the ladies would be offering babysitting services for the baby or older sibling if needed and I'll bet they would have probably taken up a collection of money for her and possibly throw her an after the fact shower, that's how the places I've worked at have treated people I've worked with and I'm real sure that her workplace would have done the same. She's just a selfish twat, no excuses for her.

God, stories like this make me sick. But, what I do not understand is how no one noticed something was wrong? I'm not saying anyone else should be charged, but I don't get it. Did she have a 5 minute labor where she made absolutely no noise? And, did she cover the baby's mouth to keep the child from crying? And, did it only take her a minute to clean up the mess from the birth? Not to mention her clothes. She had no mess on her clothes? Stories like this always make me wonder how no one else noticed. I can see how no one would have noticed if she was alone at home. But, in the bathroom of a restaurant? I don't get it. Of course, I will never get why they throw the babies into dumpsters either.

So this isn't uncharted territory for her. Bah. I'd be more inclined to believe she did not know she was pregnant if it were the first time. She knew.

I am certain fear is a good part of it. Fear of what will she do when baby is born and the responsibilities that follow. Desperation alone can take one to places they have never been. I understand that well, but still. This was a persons life in her hands and she decided death was her fate.

I am most interested in what goes through a woman's mind when she decides to birth a life and toss it out like trash. Even if she is in denial most her pregnancy, nothing like labor to bring one to reality....is that what happened? reality?
The labor....she feels every movement this baby makes in unison with her body to breath life; she see's her infant girl for the first time, hears her whimpering cries. So how does one decide to trash this precious baby? frantic, scared, desperate, yes! but, HOW then, does the heart and mind find the deepest, darkest pit as to do such a thing?

A helpless infant who had no choice, none but to die in a dumpster; she choose this. Shame on this woman. What a selfish, unfathomable act, completely void of any respect for life. She knew more than many first time teenage mothers, she likely knew of other options, she had to know this would mean murder in a most cruel and terrible way. I hope she never forgets. Her every living day, the womb she carries, a constant reminder to the one she gave no worth to and threw away.

I'll remember you baby girl as Bella Mariposa.
You deserved a fair chance at life with someone who's dreams consume them in holding one as precious as you.

Even if this isn't a state where you can leave your baby no questions asked, you can put your baby up for adoption and when you leave the hospital - no baby! We need to hook these people up with the women running around cutting babies out of the bellies of pregnant women that want their babies. Hmmm.... sounds like either a web site or a game show to me!

It is my understanding that all of the lower 48 states have a variation of a "Safe Haven? law. Every one of them would encompass this child. Some only go to a few days old but some (like my state) go up to a year old.

Sadly it seems that some selfish cum dumpsters would rather a dead baby than one raised without them. Like it never happened.

Yeah, I'd rather be known as someone who gave up her baby than someone who killed their baby thru neglect or abuse or whatever else you can do that harms a baby. It seems that these women seem to think either that they can throw it away and no one will be the wiser or that it is more shameful to give a baby away to someone who'll love them than to kill them. I don't get it, cause I would rather do the one that would get me in the least amount of trouble.

The photo top right is of Gering after hearing the charges against her.

Curious if the baby wasn't her boyfriends? she makes me so angry and sick, crying over the charge not for the baby she left for dead.
RACINE, Wis. -- A Franklin woman was charged with first-degree reckless homicide and concealing the death of a child on Tuesday after she gave birth to a baby last month and put it in a trash bin, police said.
    [...]
Detectives questioned Gering, who eventually admitted to giving birth in the bathroom of a Perkins Restaurant where she was a manager, before disposing of the newborn's body.A coworker told authorities that Gering allegedly complained of cramps and bleeding and went into the bathroom - asking the employee to bring her three trash bags and ten towels.

After having the baby, Gering allegedly stuffed the baby into a trash bag along with her clothing and bloody towels. When she emerged from the bathroom, she reportedly carried the trash can to a metal garbage bin behind the Westgate Mall where she disposed of the body.

Police searched the bin and found a fully developed deceased infant girl, weighing six pounds twelve ounces and twenty inches long. An autopsy showed the child was born alive.

Gering was booked into the Racine County jail and charged with first-degree reckless homicide and concealing the death of a child. Her bond was set at $100,000, with the condition that she be monitored by a GPS device. If convicted, she faces a 63-year prison sentence.

Gering also has a three-year-old daughter, who is staying with her boyfriend. Child Protective Services have investigated the home and determined that there is no reason to remove the toddler.
her MS...no pics of her 3 yo but oh, yeah, her and her man. Wonder if he is the father of the 3 yo....I hope little one will be OK in his care. We know the statistics with boyfriends especially those who are pissed off.

Baby girl was perfect. Someone would have taken her and loved her like their own.

If my fat manager complained of cramps and then asked me for 10 motherfucking towels and 3 trash bags i would call 911. I may not know she is having a baby but that is way too much bleeding for any woman. Do people just turn a blind eye because they are lazy and thoughtless? I don't know. I do think that if just one coworker had shoved her way in the bathroom to check on her they would have seen what was going down, and maybe this baby would be alive still.

This part will haunt me a very long time.
She walks out with bag in hand unknown to anyone, she has a baby in there who is dying... suffocating....can't cry or whimper. I tell you, it would have been sweet justice if this bitch would have bleed out from delivery. My mind is kind of numb over this. I mean she threw out a perfect baby, a tiny helpless human being. I'd taken her. As hard as things are right now, I would have taken her.

Rest in peace littlest Bella you deserved to live a long happy life loved.

Lays to rest the question of whether she knew she was pregnant or not, you wouldn't ask for towels and trashbags if you didn't think you were going to produce something to put in it, as horrible as that sounds.

As usual, the typical crying picture... not of remorse... but of being caught at being a stupid cold blooded cunt that deserves to be stuffed into 3 trashbags and dumped into a dumpster behind some mall in Hell. I just hate that crying look!!! It's all about me look.

1.) How long was she in that bathroom with cramps and bleeding?
2.) Not only did the staff ignore shit the patrons in and out of that bathroom ignored shit too. SOMEONE had to hear that baby cry its first breath.

This is just disgusting and I hope that fat cunt dies from gangrene of the uterus.

My last daughter was born just over one hour from the first (actually 3 in a row) contraction. There was no one within a one mile radius that didn't hear me in labor, no meds, no epi, no episiotomy, nothing. Totally on my own and it was NOT silent. Bullshit the staff didn't know. I agree with Nell.

A woman who gave birth in a restaurant bathroom, then left her newborn daughter in a trash bin, has pleaded guilty to reckless homicide for the infant's death.

Breanna Gering, 24, of Franklin, was at work at Perkins, 4915 Washington Ave., on Aug. 16. About 9 a.m. she went into the bathroom and gave birth to a girl.
    [...]

She was charged with first-degree reckless homicide and concealing the death of a child.

In court Monday morning, Gering cried and rocked back and forth as she listened to Racine County Circuit Court Judge Allan "Pat" Torhorst and answered his questions.

"Do you understand what you did to incur the charge?" Torhorst asked.

"Yes, sir," Gering answered, her voice breaking.

"Do you understand how your conduct fits in with that charge?" he said.

    "Yes, sir."

    "What is your plea?"

    "Guilty."

The state will recommend she serve substantial prison time for the conviction of reckless homicide; the charge of concealing the death of a child will be dismissed. She is due to be sentenced March 11.

I pushed a smaller baby out (5 lbs 6 oz) in under 5 hours, with no drugs or augmentation. There is no way on this green earth that I could have done it silently.

that myspace account is actually Gerings ex-husband who was arrested several times for spousal battery.... After years of mental and physical abuse this poor girl just panicked and was probably thinking of what he would do to her when he found out about this kid. It's a horrible and sad situation....

Seriously I am considering placing ads in the paper, on craigslist, on/around dumpsters and in public bathrooms. Hell, I should invest in printing ads on trash bags and plastic grocery bags. I would give nearly anything for a baby. I would meet these chicks anytime/anyplace. They would have to sign some papers and that would be it, they can go do whatever, no one would have to know.

My parents adopted a baby boy when I was a baby, his "Mom" was a drug addict and left him with sitters or where ever, she eventually OD'd (in the bathtub) and her family found out about him and came to my parents asking for him. They allowed the family to raise him after much thought and discussion. They only had him for a few weeks but who knows what would have happened if his "mom" had him between when they got him and when she OD'd? They said it hurt like hell, they were so upset for a long time but the fact that they could give him a safe, warm and loving home when he needed it and now he is 28, he's getting married and he has no recollection of the tough start he had.
At first, I was thinking, "Oh, what the FUCK is this shit?" Then I was chewing my nails and screaming at Mr. Lizard: "PAUSE IT! I HAVE TO GO PEE!" ~Lizard
