IRON RIDGE, Wis. -- A 4-year-old girl was attacked and killed by a dog Wednesday afternoon in Hubbard Township near Iron Ridge, according to the Dodge County sheriff.
Dodge County Sheriff Todd Nehls said Taylor Becker was taken to Beaver Dam Community Hospital, where she was pronounced dead.
Taylor, from Hustisford, was visiting the home where the attack happened. Both families said they knew each other, and the girl had been to the home before, Nehls said.
The dog was on a leash and chain in the back yard of the residence with a length that permitted access to the entire yard where the attack took place.
Nehls said the dog and the girl were alone at the time of the attack.
"You'll never be able to answer why the dog reacted or did what he did," Nehls said.
The dog was a 5-year-old boxer and was taken to the Dodge County Humane Society, the sheriff said.
Investigators said a neighbor saw the attack from the roadway and ran to the family's front door, telling them to call 911.
"He saw something fly that didn't look right," neighbor Shirley Blecher said.
For nine minutes, a dispatcher gave CPR instructions over the phone, Nehls said.
Then for an hour, various emergency personnel tried to save the little girl's life, according to deputies.
Blecher said she is praying for the family who lost their little girl and the family whose dog attacked.
"That's got to be horrific. I wouldn't want to be in either one of their positions," Blecher said.
The dog will remain there under quarantine for 10 days, then his owners will decide what to do with him.
