Yeah Obama went to church every Sun. alright, to the great preaching of Jerimah Wright with all his "Goddam America" hate bullshit. Then during the election all that priceless Jerimah Wright video of preaching good will came out and Obama throws Jerimah Wright right under the bus after 20 yrs. How christan like of Obama!

Obama now doesn't go to church he has a spirtual advisor! I think it would be easier to find the holy grail than to try and find out what Obamas true religion is.

It would make sense if Obama was a satanist after all many believe Obama is the Antichrist! And so was Bush at one time, Obama would sport the horns better than Bush!

People do seem to really care what religion Obama is, its a pretty hot topic.

You can't just put a band-aid on what is still very deep wound for NY and the rest of the US. This mosque feels like adding salt to the wound. Call me retarded but I can't help but to think if the roles were reversed the middle east would have none of it. The mosque can go any where why there? Whether it is 2 blocks or not people in NY are very sensitive to it.
Why not just give them that respect.

I don’t usually write about politics. It’s important, but something I want no part of – kind of like a raw sewage treatment facility. But frankly, I haven’t been this upset in a long time. And it’s due to the logic-hating, herd-mentality rhetoric that some have been flinging in opposition to the so-called “Ground Zero Mosque.” For the uninitiated, there are plans to construct an Islamic Community center in lower Manhattan. And, of course, lower Manhattan is where the World Trade Center stood before terrorists destroyed it, thereby murdering 3,000 Americans. I was working in New York City at the time. As was my father. As was my pregnant wife. I remember the day well. And the days that followed. I think most of all, I remember standing on the Staten Island Ferry, coming home with 200 other silent, reverent New Yorkers of every age, race, and religion, as we watched our city still smoldering a full week later. And it is with this backdrop that I can say to every politician spouting off and opposing the construction of this Islamic community center: “Shut up. Go away. You hate America.”

I’m talking about people like professional political tumor, Newt Gingrich, and future worst President ever, Sarah Palin, who have both slammed supporters of the Islamic community center with rhetoric so flawed, I’m afraid even linking to it might impair your computer’s higher functioning circuits. But it’s not just them. Due to the wave of misinformation being spread, apparently 68% of Americans also oppose the mosque.

How did this happen? Well, basically a complacent or a complicit media helped perpetuate three ideas that are either outright lies or intellectually dishonest arguments designed to bring out the very worst in all of us. And as you continue to hear them–and you will–take out this column which you will have already printed and laminated, and recite thusly:

Even the guys that make dick jokes on the internet for a living know that this debate lame. Please read the link and really think about it.

This is a map of the proposed site for the mosque. Look at how far away it is.

Cordoba House is to be part of "The Community Center at Parks51" that would be open to people of all faiths. There would be a private area for muslim prayer set aside, but the majority of the complex would be for general community usage. (source)

    Cordoba House
We're all about multiple points of entry, offering programming in the areas of arts and culture, education and recreation. Within that larger vision, Cordoba House will be a center for multifaith dialogue and engagement within Park51's broader range of programs and activities.
    and
    Vision
Park51 will be dedicated to pluralism, service, arts and culture, education and empowerment, appreciation for our city and a deep respect for our planet. Park51 will join New York to the world, offering a welcoming community center with multiple points of entry.

With world-class facilities, a global scope and strong local roots, Park 51 will offer a friendly and accessible platform for conversations across our identities.
    http://www.park51.org/cordoba.htm

Around the corner from the Parks51 site is a porn store and a few doors down is an OTB. THAT would be far more offensive if I was in the mood to get all uppity about it. I bet Ground Zero souvenirs will get hawked by street vendors (if they aren't already). I can't wait to get my snow globe with the towers in it and little planes floating inside...

Personally I like porn, what I don't like is what the name insinuates and the location chosen
They built it as close as they possibly could to ground ZERO, and the chosen name tells you why
This is not a positive or friendly act, this is an evil defiant act, meant as a slap in the face to all Americans
Most see it for what it is, others still believe we went to war to save the world from Saddam Hussein

It is not a mosque. It's blocks away. Where is the imaginary line that makes it OK? I do not have to go there for any reason (even if I lived next door). It's not like they are hanging a "Na Na Na Boo Boo" sign on the front door... people are only imagining one.

I don't care that it's "meant as a slap in the face of all Americans". As far as I'm concerned, that is just misinformed hype. The more I read, the more I am sure of that. If people are not offended, it kinda takes the wind out of their sails. The more people act all OMG and flap their hands about it, the more comical it gets.

It's not like this is something new. A mosque/cultural center near Ground Zero.

I do wish that the people in charge of the mosque would be understanding and maybe compromise a bit. However, we need to understand, it is human nature that as soon as you start vilifying someone and demanding things, it makes them want to dig their heels in even more and compromise less.

My stance is this: the more we change from what we were before 9/11, the more the terrorists win. The more we fight amongst ourselves, the more the terrorists win. Why not be the better ones, and say "Although we wish you would be more sensitive to some of the family members and Americans who are opposed, this is the US and we will not interfere with your rights." Let's not forget that some of the first responders on 9/11 were Muslim, some of the soldiers dying in Iraq and Afghanistan defending our Constitution are Muslim. I wonder how they must feel about this guilt by association?

    What a fucking insult ..
Actually, you cant see it. Also, have you been there? I have, a month ago. You know what you do see?

A big giant hole in the fucking ground. Rubble. Metal fencing all around. Construction equipment. THIS IS HOW WE HONOR THE 3000 PLUS PEOPLE THAT DIED THERE. TEN FUCKING YEARS LATER.

I respect some of you guys' opinion on the mosque. But what I want to know is, why isn't anyone just as outraged that in this great country of ours, we cant even build a monument over the course of 10 years to honor the biggest loss of life in our country's recent history??????

Pictures I took myself of Ground Zero last month:

All that priceless video? Wasnt it one or two sermons out of the course of 20 years? Kind of reminds me of Glenn Beck demonizing the guy in charge of the mosque for saying that 9/11 may be a result of our foreign policy, only to find out that Glenn Beck said basically the same exact thing a couple years ago...

NEW YORK – Talat Hamdani traveled to Mecca to pray that her missing son, an EMT, was safe in the days after 9/11. She held out hope that his Muslim background had led to his detention as a suspect, considering it better than the alternative.

When part of his body was returned to her — his lower half shattered into 34 pieces — it was final proof he had indeed been killed when Islamic extremists brought down the World Trade Center. As Americans take sides over plans to build an Islamic cultural center and mosque blocks away, Hamdani says it feels personal.

"Why are we paying the price? Why are we being ostracized? Our loved ones died," she said at her Lake Grove, N.Y., home. "America was founded on the grounds of religious freedom," and opposition to the cultural center "is un-American. It's unethical. And it is wrong."

The thousands of relatives of the 2,976 victims have no single representative and no unified voice, even as another 9/11 anniversary approaches. The conflict is dividing a group that in many ways has never been united, with some saying the cultural center would reopen old wounds too close to hallowed ground and others saying that opposing it is tantamount to bigotry.

And some, like Vandna Jain, walk a middle ground.

"It is unfair to persecute the group, however, in turn, there should be some respect for the feelings of the people that are forever attached to this site due to their losses," the New City, N.Y., resident, whose father, Yudh, died in the north tower, wrote in an e-mail. "I think people have a right to be upset about it, just as much as people have a right to build a mosque."

I thought long and hard about this all evening. I must admit that my reaction to the news was based on ignorance. I don't have an issue admitted it. After giving it much thought and what it really means to ME, this is what I believe.

Yes, the 19 or 20 men that blew up our Towers, and the Pentagon, they were of Muslim belief. However, I will not paint all Muslims with the same brush. I haven't had the pleasure of meeting anyone that is Muslim. So I don't really know anything about their religion, other than what has been reported in years after the 9/11 attacks. But even with the little that I know, I don't feel that they are all like this. It's no different to me, than saying that all Christian's bomb Abortion Clinics. We all don't do that, and it would be unfair to say that we are all murderers.

It's a touchy subject with a lot of people, especially New Yorkers. But like Nell just posted, Muslims were also killed when they struck the Towers.

What happened in 9/11 was not the Muslims, it was Terrorist that hid under the Muslim religion, just like that Eric Rudolph who bombed many Abortion Clinics called himself a Christian. Well as far as I know, Christian's don't condone murder. What he is a white supremacist that called himself a Christian, much like the Terrorist that attacked us back in Sept 11, 2001.

Americans Muslims are also protected by our Constitution, so are we prepared to deny their rights to make us feel better? If we do, when will it stop, and with what? Are you prepared to loose some of your rights? I am not, and neither should they.

Yesterday, I really felt offended but I have thought about what I was offended about and now I am ashamed of it.

I feel exactly like Babies Momma. After reading the posts here and started doing a little research I have to agree. My response was at first the emotional reaction. I believe the media played to big a role in reporting things out of context. Its never too late to learn

Pete, if you are referring to me...Weak would not be the word to describe me. I would deserve the label of weak if I wouldn't stand up for what I believe in. I will not subscribe to anyone's belief's just so that I won't get attacked. Attack me if that makes you feel better, I can handle it....I have pretty much walked on hot coals all my life, this would be a cake walk.

Pete it does seem pointless once you realize how much the media blew this out of proportion and reported shit out of context

That is nothing new... it's almost laughable sometimes. Laughable, that is, if it wasn't so pathetic how many people jump on the bandwagon and follow blindly.

Touche, Taco... but here's the difference. I've spent my entire life surrounded by Americans, living amongst them, being ONE of them... and I've seen similar lack of reason applied to myriad topics. The issue is systemic; this is merely one example.

To that end, it is hardly disagreement that causes such a reaction from me. Look around - there's several years worth of disagreements I've been engaged in around here. I can respect disagreement if it has merit. My problem with the opposing argument in this case is that it is rife with inconsistency, emotionalism and ignorance. THAT, I cannot respect.

You see, logic is consistent. If you feel this way about the mosque, as I and others have suggested, it is only logical to apply the same reasoning to a Turkish cultural center in an Armenian neighborhood or, like Broken said, Japanese restaurants in Pearl Harbor (I especially like that one). But, as far as I can tell, there's nothing consistent about the application. People have decided to feel funny about the mosque because... why? Maybe because 9/11 still evokes a painful emotion that blurs logic? Maybe because Muslims tend to be brown? Maybe because they strike people as foreign, even if they're families have been American for generations?

There are lots of reasons why people would feel weird about a mosque near Ground Zero, even though they don't experience similar discomfort in other, like situations. Problem is, none of them are logical.
