Font Size: WAYNE COUNTY, W.Va. (WSAZ) -- A mother from Wayne County has been charged with child abuse resulting in serious bodily injury, after she confessed to jerking her 3 1/2 month old son's leg so hard that it broke.
According to the criminal complaint, Lisa Witt, 21, of Wayne confessed to jerking her son's legs while she was changing his diaper on July 10 and hearing a crack. She claims she was angry with her husband at the time.
However, she did not take her son to the doctor. The criminal complaint also says she told her cousin that the baby fell because she was afraid of getting in trouble.
Witt told Wayne County Sheriff's Deputies that at a later date she was bathing her baby while she was angry with her husband. She admitted to being rough with the baby while getting him in and out of the tub, and she heard another pop. However, she still did not take the child to a doctor.
The criminal complaint says on July 23, Lisa Witt and her mother took the child to his family doctor because he couldn't straighten his leg. The doctor found that the child's left tibia was broken. He also noticed an old fracture to the left femur and right tibia.
The child was released from the hospital 3 days later.
That's when the boy and his sister were placed in the custody of family members.
On August 4, Sheriff's Deputies met with the boy's father. He agreed to take a lie detector test, but failed. He then admitted that he witnessed Lisa Witt jerk the baby's legs in anger while she was changing his diaper.
Deputies were finally able to get in touch with Lisa Witt on August 10. That's when she admitted to the jerking her son's legs on two separate instances.
Witt was arragined in Wayne County Magistrate Court Thursday morning. She was charged with one count of child abuse-leading to serious bodily injury.
