OCEAN SPRINGS (WLOX) - New details are emerging about the death of 80-year-old Joan Armstrong.
Ocean Springs Police confirm that two weapons were found at Armstrong's condo, a knife and a brick. Investigators tell WLOX News Mrs. Armstrong was beaten in the head with the brick, and stabbed multiple times. So far, nobody has been charged with her murder.
An autopsy performed on 80-year-old woman killed Saturday evening showed blunt force trauma to the head. Jackson County Coroner Vicki Broadus confirmed the findings, Sunday afternoon, as the cause of death.
Ocean Springs police found Mrs. Armstrong dead in her condo at 527 Front Beach Saturday evening.
Police say when they arrived at the home, Armstrong's 48-year-old son met them at the door with blood-stained clothes. According to police, John Armstrong was treated for self-inflicted wounds and has been hospitalized under guarded observation.
Police say the son is a suspect though he has not been charged. Lieutenant John Flowers says police have been unable to talk to the son due to his current medical condition.
Flowers says the investigation is still underway as police continue to collect evidence and establish a motive into the killing.
Mrs. Armstrong's neighbors say they were devastated when they heard news of her death. They say she had lived in their condo community for years.
Many described her as sweet lady who knew everyone in the neighborhood. They say she was well-respected in the Ocean Springs community, especially in the arts community. Several of her friends spoke with Trang Pham Bui about just how devastated they are about losing their friend.
Monday would have been Mrs. Armstrong's 81st birthday.
