Flint (Michigan) Serial Killer At Large,Killer Fatally Stabbed 15 Men,Police Say

    This was our news tonight
(Get more news on American News then on Canadian news so I watch it)

FLINT, Mich. -- Authorities are investigating a serial killer who has stabbed five men to death and wounded another 10 in Flint.

Investigators said that since May, the serial killer has been targeting vulnerable, small-framed African-American men. Two of the men he stabbed had special needs, police said.

"To me, he's a bully. He's picking on people smaller than him or somewhat vulnerable. He doesn't give a warning; he doesn’t rob them. He gives them no reason at all," said Flint police Lt. Tim Johnson during a news conference Thursday.
Most of the stabbings have occurred late at night or early in the morning near major roadways in Flint and Flint Township, where authorities said it is easier for the killer to stalk people and flee quickly.

In many cases, the killer asks his victims for directions and then begins to repeatedly stab them, police said. Sometimes, the killer gives no warning at all, said officers.

In several occasions, he just got out of his vehicle, walked up and started stabbing his victims," said Johnson.

The most recent incident happened on Monday in the 2100 block of South Saginaw Street in Flint. Arnold Miller, 59, was stabbed to death.

Miller's slaying comes on the heels of the July 30 killing of 60-year-old Frank Kellybrew in Flint Township.

Kellybrew's body was found in front of the Italia Gardens Restaurant on Miller Road, police said.

Priscilla VanSickle told Local 4 that her 27-year-old nephew, who has special needs, was stabbed four times by the serial killer.

"He said he just started stabbing him and stabbing him. He's still in the hospital. He's not doing good at all," said VanSickle.

The serial killer is described as a white man, about 5 feet 11 inches to 6 feet 2 inches tall with a heavy or muscular build.

"He's a serial killer. He's crazy and needs to be locked up," said VanSickle.

Authorities are working with a forensic psychologist to determine whether the stabbings are racially motivated hate crimes.

Police have beefed up patrols in the area and are working on a sketch of the person suspected in the stabbings.

Ummm, he should certainly stand out in Flint, especially driving around after hours.

They need to alert local churches, clinics, government assistance offices and any shelters.

They also should provide a sketch of him. If he has 10 survivors, one would think at least 2 or 3 could give an accurate facial description.

Unless all his survivors are homeless and drunk. Quite possible, but I hope not.

Hell man, if it were up to me the posters would say IF A BIG WHITE GUY WALKS UP TO YOU ASKING FOR DIRECTIONS, RUN

But it's not up to me.

This is my hometown. Isn't that special? Flint is gonna go under like Detroit. Mark my words. It's all car plants and those are struggling if not closed. That's a lot of manual labor workers and little white collar. The balance is screwed. Shame.

MID-MICHIGAN (WJRT) -- (08/06/10) -- UPDATE -- There have been five deadly stabbings and at least eight other incidents since last May in Flint, Flint Township, Burton and Genesee Township.

Michigan State Police are coordinating the multi-jurisdictional investigation.

Flint Police Chief Alvern Lock says all agencies are working to catch this suspect before anything else happens.

Forensic profilers are being consulted to try to determine his motivation, and sketch artists will be made available.

Police want the public to be aware of his M-O as well.

"This suspect is preying upon being people's good will. He's seeking them out and asking them for help, and receiving it - and repaying it by repeatedly stabbing," Flint police Lt. T.P. Johnson said. "He doesn't rob them. He just attacks them for no reason at all."

According to Johnson, the man appears to be "hunting."

The suspect is described as an adult white male between 5 feet 11 inches and 6 feet 2 inches tall with heavy or muscular build. He may have light colored hair.

Investigators say he drives around at night pretending to be in need of assistance.

"Anyone that knows someone that's of that vulnerable population, talk to them and advise them not to be out alone," Lock advised.

All but one of the victims have been African-American males. Most are smaller-framed and all are either older or otherwise vulnerable.

Investigators believe the stabbings started in Flint.

David Motley, 31, was found in the parkway near Leith and Dexter around 6 a.m. on May 24.

June 21, 59-year-old Emanuel Muhammad Dent was stabbed a number of times in the area of Wood and Avenue B at around 3 a.m.

On July 26, a neighbor found 43-year-old Darwin Marshall outside a home in the 800 Block of Garland.

"I'm hurting, other mothers are hurting. I just want it to stop. I really do. I just want it to stop," said his mother, Velma Marshall.

Last Friday, July 30, a garbage truck driver spotted the body of 60-year-old Frank Kellybrew in the driveway of a Flint Township restaurant. The apparent cause of death was multiple stab wounds

Monday morning in Flint, 49-year-old Arnold Minor was found around 2:30 in the 2100 block of South Saginaw.

There have been a number of other victims - men that have lived. "I went to help him and he just started stabbing me," one victim said.

This man showed us his wounds and shared his story. "I'd give anything to find him."

A Flint family is holding out hope that their loved one's killer will be brought to justice.

The loved ones of Arnold Ray Minor are asking why would someone commit such an evil act.

"My heart is crying from the inside. I am so hurt," said mother Elzora Minor.

Arnold Ray Minor was found stabbed to death. The family says he was stabbed in the chest and abdomen in the 2100 Block of South Saginaw Street in Flint early Monday morning.

Investigators believe he was stabbed by a man described as white and muscular who is connected to similar stabbings in the area.

"He has to be the devil to want to take someone's life," Elzora Minor said.

His sister, Stephanie Ward, last saw him Sunday night. She believes he was about a mile from his home when he was stopped by the suspect.

"If somebody came to him and asked him for directions or help and he walking, he's the type where you need. 'Where you trying to go?' That's him," Ward said.

This death is particularly hard for the Minor family, which lost another relative to violence.

"I lost my older sister to a murder 26 years ago, but to relive this all over again, I just don't understand," Ward said.

The family says the funeral for Arnold Ray Minor is set for Monday at noon at Swanson Funeral Home in Flint.

The family is asking for donations be sent to the funeral home to help pay for the service.

Anyone with information is asked to call the Flint Michigan State Police post at (810) 732-11-11 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-422-5245

A knife-wielding slasher who Michigan police believe is responsible for the stabbing deaths of five African-American men since mid-May is still "learning how to kill," an expert says.

"He's honing his craft," former FBI agent Harold Copus told AOL News. "Soon, he'll take it [to] another level and you'll see more violence."

The slayings and attacks on eight other men have have occurred in Burton, Flint, Flint Township and Genesee Township, police say.

The latest victim was Arnold Minor, 49. He was found stabbed to death on Flint's south side Monday. Police say the location was not far from where several of the other attacks took place.

"When they found him, he wasn't far from home," Minor's sister, Stephanie Ward, told The Detroit News. "He bled to death on the street. You don't know what goes through somebody's mind to do something like that."

On July 30, Frank Kellybrew, 60, was killed. That slaying took place in Flint Township, not far from Kellybrew's home, police say.

Investigators have declined to identify the other victims and will only say the crimes date back to mid-May.

The killer, an unknown white male, typically selects older victims who are more vulnerable to his attacks, investigators say. Among the 13 attacks the killer is believed to have committed, only one of the victims was white, police say.

Flint Police Chief Alvern Lock said the killer does not rob his victims. A motive in the case remains unclear.

"We are still trying to nail that down in particular, but we are trying to be responsive to the community and warn the community while we are still gathering that information and putting it together," Lock told AOL News.

In an interview with The Detroit News, Frances Gilcreast, the president of the Flint branch of the NAACP, expressed concern over the handling of the case and found it alarming that the attacks had not been made public until now.

"Why didn't we know about it?" Gilcreast asked the newspaper. "We didn't know there was anybody out there stabbing black folk. If it had been in another community, and it had been vice versa, they would have alerted them."

Lock declined to comment on whether the killer is purposely targeting a specific race and will only say his department has characterized the victims as "vulnerable citizens."

According to Copus, the type of the victims the killer is selecting is much more telling than their race.

"He is going after individuals who are less able to protect themselves," said Copus, head of Copus Security Consultants in Atlanta. "Race has nothing to do with it. A major factor is most likely the areas where he is doing his hunting."

The fact that the killer uses a knife as his weapon of choice is also very significant, Copus says.

"A gun is highly impersonal," Copus said. "I could shoot you from a distance and it is almost meaningless, but when I use a knife, it is personal. I am going to show you I can dominate you and I can take your life. There is a certain amount of thrill I can get by thrusting that knife in right in front of you. I'm taking your life and you're dying."

Copus added: "This guy enjoys seeing the blood and everything else, and that is the reason he is using the knife."

Another interesting aspect of the crimes is the fact that there is not much of a "cooling off" period between the killings, something Copus says is typical of serial killers.

"This is highly unusual and very risky," Copus said. "My reaction is he is practicing. He has a mental issue and he can't suppress it. He is like that lion or that tiger that is eating flesh -- once you got the taste, you can't get away from it. You just better pray that he hasn't mastered the killing phase because once he does, he'll be harder to catch."

Lock says that despite all the unknowns in the case, he is hopeful the slayings will be solved "real soon." In the meantime, he is asking residents to take extra precautions to protect themselves.

"We just ask them to be careful. ... When they are out by themselves at night and someone wants some help or some information from them, [to] be wary of those individuals and try not to be by themselves," Lock said.

VA Police: Flint Serial Killer Has Struck
Both Police Departments Believe Attacks Were Racially Motivated
Two cities halfway across the county are on high alert after police said a serial killer committing racially motivated crimes has crossed state borders.

Police in Flint, Mich. and Leesburg, VA, said the same man who is responsible for the stabbing death of five men and wounding at least another eight men in Michigan since May, stabbed three more men in VA last week.
The last fatal stabbing in Michigan was last Monday and the last reported stabbing by the serial killer was on Friday evening in VA.
Investigators said that in most cases, the serial killer is targeting small-framed African-American men.
After the word that a serial killer was on the loose in Flint, detectives in Leesburg, VA reached out to the Michigan State Police Sunday and began sharing information.
Leesburg police said three separate incidents in the past week may be linked to the Flint serial killer. The first incident was on Tuesday evening when a 15-year-old was stabbed.

The second incident was last Thursday, when a 67-year-old man was followed into the lobby of his apartment complex.
The 67-year-old victim told police that suddenly he felt a sharp pain in his back. He said he turned around and saw a man attacking him.

Both men remain hospitalized. The 67-year-old man lost a kidney as a result of the attack, police said.
The third incident was on Friday evening. A 19-year-old was approached by a man from behind and hit with a hammer. He was treated for non-life threatening- injuries.
    [...]
Leesburg police said they also believe the crimes are racially motivated and that in the last instance, the serial stabber yelled obscenities. He would not go into detail about what the serial killer said.
However, the reason investigators think there may be a link in the stabbings is because the perpetrator's vehicle description is similar and so are the physical characteristics.
The serial killer is described as a white man in his late 20s to early 30s, about 5 feet 11 inches to 6 feet 2 inches tall with a heavy or muscular build.
He may have light-colored hair and usually wears a baseball cap during the attacks.

Many of the victims have described his vehicle as a dark green, possible lighter color shade on the bottom half, Chevrolet Blazer or GMC Jimmy.
Leesburg police said that in the attack at the apartment complex, surveillance cameras captured the suspect's vehicle, which police identified as a green 1995 to late 2000 Chevrolet S-10 Blazer, with lighter-colored panels. Also, the vehicle did not have any VA required inspection stickers or a front license plate tag.

Police said that in all the cases, the victims were alone and vulnerable.

Police investigate 16th stabbing linked to serial slasher
FLINT, Mich. (WXYZ) - Police are now investigating the stabbing of a 16th person in Genesee County. According to the Michigan State Police Task Force, the victim said he was stabbed repeatedly on July 27th around 3 a.m.

The victim said he was walking on Pierson Road near Flemming Road, when a man approached him and asked for help with his vehicle.

The victim's descriptions of the suspect and his vehicle were similar to previous victims' accounts.

An investigation is also underway in Toledo, Ohio, where 59-year-old Anthony “Tony” Leno was stabbed Saturday. Leno said he was stabbed by a man who was asking for directions. It happened outside of the church where Leno works, near Collingswood and Bancroft.

Because the church is located just blocks from the I-75 freeway, police believe it could be linked to attacks in Flint.

On Monday, police in Leesburg, Virginia announced that a series of attacks there may also be connected with the serial slasher in Flint.

The Washington Post is reporting that police officials in Leesburg have been in contact with investigators in Flint about the case. Leesburg is about an hour northwest of Washington, DC, near the Virginia-Maryland state line.

According to the Post article, three incidents in the Leesburg area have similar details to the cases in Flint. In each case an African American male has been attacked by a white man. In two cases, the assailant used a knife. A hammer was used in the third attack. None of the victims have been killed in the Virginia cases.

All three Virginia attacks happened in the first week of August. The latest Virginia attack came on Friday, August 6. The other two were on August 3 and August 5.

The Virginia attacks follow the 16 attacks in Flint. Five victims have been killed. All but one of the people who have been attacked in Flint have been African American.

Police in Flint have released both a sketch and a vehicle description in the case. Virginia authorities say the vehicle matches the description of a vehicle used in at least one of the cases there.

The vehicle is described as a 1995 to 2005 Chevrolet Blazer or GMC Jimmy with two large dents in the hood. The vehicle may be either dark green or a two-tone green over beige or gold.

ATLANTA, Ga. (WXYZ) - Michigan State Police investigators are on the scene of a home in Flint that they believe may be the residence of the man suspected in the serial slashings.

Investigators are interviewing neighbors and digging through trash.

Police arrested the man they believe to be the serial stabber at the airport in Atlanta, Georgia. Around 10 p.m. Wednesday night, the suspect was arrested as he tried to board a flight headed out of the country. U.S. Customs officials say they arrested the man at the Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport as he tried to board Delta flight 152 headed for Tel Aviv, Israel.

He is currently being held on unrelated charges.

WXYZ.com will carry a live news conference from the Flint Township Police Department starting at 2:00 p.m.

Late Wednesday afternoon, police say a tip developed into a strong investigative lead. Police say the individual identified has ties to both Flint and Leesburg, Va.

Police had received more than 500 tips in the case, and were working around-the-clock to catch the man that became known as the "serial stabber."

Police believe one person is responsible for at least 16 attacks in Flint, five of them fatal. Authorities say the same person is tied to three attacks in Leesburg, Va., and another in Toledo, Ohio.

Stabbing Spree Suspect Arrested At Atlanta Airport
Authorities In Atlanta Arrest Man Thought To Be Suspect In Spree Of Stabbings; May Have Been Trying To Flee Country
A suspect in a string of 18 stabbings that terrorized people across three states and left five dead was arrested in front of startled passengers at an airport gate as he tried to board a plane for Israel, officials said Thursday.

A judge in Flint, Mich., where the attacks began in late May, signed a warrant Thursday charging Elias Abuelazam, 33, with assault with intent to murder in connection with a July 27 stabbing.

Antwoine Marshall, 26, of Flint, the victim of that attack, told The Associated Press that the FBI visited him at 3 a.m. to show him a picture of the man arrested in Atlanta, and he identified him as the assailant.

Marshall said he was going into his apartment building when the assailant approached and asked for help fixing his car. He was stabbed twice when he opened the hood. Three of his organs were cut, and he has a long scar from his chest to his pelvic area.

Marshall said he wants to "retaliate" but "I'll let God handle it. Every time I look at my scar, I get angry."

In Michigan, Genesee County Prosecutor David Leyton said authorities still don't know the motive. Most victims were black, and police have said the attacks may have been racially motivated, though Leyton said there was no evidence of that.

Atlanta police said they went to Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport at the request of Michigan State Police and paged Abuelazam over the intercom as he waited to board a Delta Air Lines flight to Tel Aviv.

Investigative leads prompted CBP officers to check the flight manifest where they found his name, CBS News correspondent Bob Orr reports.

Passengers on that flight said as they arrived in Tel Aviv that he was tense and talking on his cell phone when he was arrested at the boarding gate shortly before takeoff. They said six police officers led him away without incident.

"He was talking on the phone. I didn't hear what he said," Romi Shaked, who was on the plane, told The Associated Press. "I just saw him talking to different people and moving around and sitting in different seats."

Leyton said Abuelazam's uncle bought him the plane ticket, which cost about $3,000, and is now cooperating with police.

The suspect has ties to Flint and to Leesburg, Va., the site of three similar attacks last week, Leesburg Police Officer Chris Jones said.

"While this is a key step in the investigation, there are still many issues that need to be addressed before we identify this individual as the person responsible for this horrific crime spree," Jones said.

Police in Arlington, Va., said Abuelazam was arrested there during a routine traffic stop last week.

Arlington Detective Crystal L. Nosal said police realized he was wanted on a simple assault warrant in Leesburg, about 30 miles away, but a magistrate released him on personal recognizance, meaning he was responsible for returning to court.

Leyton, the Michigan prosecutor, said the Arlington stop was for failure to obey a highway sign and police found a knife in the driver's side door and a hammer on the floor of Abuelazam's 1996 green and gold Chevrolet Blazer. A hammer was used in one attack in Virginia, on a 19-year-old man in a parking lot.

Police impounded the Blazer, which matched a vehicle described by some stabbing victims who survived, then gave it back to Abuelazam, Leyton said.

According to court records in Loudoun County, where Leesburg is located, Abuelazam was arrested in December 2007 and charged with felony gun possession. Those charges were dropped the next year.

He was also charged with misdemeanor assault in 2008, and had a court date scheduled next week.

Abuelazam is an Israeli citizen who is living in the U.S. with a green card, Leyton said.

Police had focused their hunt on Flint - where 16 stabbings took place - until Leesburg police reported three attacks. Authorities in Toledo, Ohio, say a stabbing in that city Saturday appears to be linked to the violent spree.

In Mount Morris Township, near Flint, a few dozen people who heard about the arrest gathered outside a convenience store where Abuelazam worked. One yelled that the owner should have been suspicious. Police cleared the parking lot.

"He was a good guy. All of my employees, we never thought nothing about the guy," said Abdulla Farrah, manager of Kingwater Market.

Farrah said Abuelazam worked there for about a month before leaving Aug. 1. He said investigators looked at store video Wednesday.

Jessica Abuelazam, an Arlington, Texas, woman who identified herself as Elias' ex-wife, said she was struggling to cope with the news too.

"I'm shocked," she said in a phone interview. "I'm trying to figure out what's going on."

As of Wednesday afternoon, a task force led by the Michigan State Police and including the FBI had received 469 tips.

The attacks began in late spring and police said they usually followed a pattern: The suspect approached black men late at night on lonely urban roads and asked for directions or help with a broken-down car. Then, without warning, he pulled out a knife and struck. Then, he sped away, leaving them for dead.

The brazen nature and the frequency of the attacks - the assailant struck an average of about once every four days since the first stabbing in May - has terrified some of those in cities he's already targeted.

The youngest victim was 17; the oldest was 60. They ranged in size from 5-foot-4 inches and 120 pounds to 6-foot-1 and 190 pounds.

Authorities in Leesburg, a predominantly white city, believe the three victims there were chosen because they are black.

The Leesburg victims were a 15-year-old boy, stabbed near a gas station, a 67-year-old man attacked with a knife while sitting on the steps of an apartment building, and a man hit in the head with a hammer, reported CBS News correspondent Elaine Quijano. All survived.

"I believe his motivation is pure hatred," Leesburg Police Chief Joseph Price said at a Tuesday news conference in which he released a short video clip of the vehicle the suspect drove after attacking a 19-year-old man with a hammer

Suspected serial killer waives extradition to Michigan
A suspected serial killer who was captured in Atlanta waived extradition Friday afternoon and will return to Michigan to face charges he stabbed at least one person. The afternoon hearing for Elias Abuelazam was scheduled after his attorney did not show up for a morning hearing, at which the suspect also waived extradition. Abuelazam has been linked to at least 17 other stabbings in three states.
Abuelazam shuffled into Fulton County Superior Court Friday morning wearing a blue jail jumpsuit with with his hands handcuffed to chains around his waist.

Abuelazam seemed confused about the purpose of the hearing. At first he said he wanted to stay in Georgia and force the governor of Michigan to initiate the formal extradition process, and he asked Fulton Superior Court Judge Richard Hicks to define the word extradition.

"Is it possible to think about it?" Abuelazam said in a thick accent. "I won't go to Michigan."

After the judge explained Michigan authorities had 15 business days to retrieve him, Abuelazam said, "OK, I'll do so, it's more logical to go right now."

A Michigan judge signed an arrest warrant Thursday morning for Abuelazam just hours after Atlanta police took him into custody at the request of investigators assigned to the stabbings in Flint, Mich.
    [...]
Abuelazam was taken into custody Wednesday evening after Atlanta police had him paged over an intercom at Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport where he was waiting for a 10:15 Delta Air Lines flight to Tel Aviv.

Abuelazam is being held in the Fulton County Jail, where he was transferred after first being taken to the city jail in Atlanta Wednesday night.

Genessee County, Mich., prosecutor David Leyton told reporters Abuelazam was in all three cities where the stabbings occurred -- Flint, Mich.; Leesburg, Va.; and Toledo, Ohio -- on the same days of each attack. They said they also believed Abuelazam's green Chevrolet Blazer was the SUV victims described or the car captured on surveillance video in the area.

Arlington, Va., police came across Abuelazam on Aug. 5 during a routine traffic stop. They impounded his green Blazer when they discovered an outstanding warrant charging him with simple assault in Leesburg, about 30 miles away. Police found a knife and hammer in the Blazer.

But Arlington authorities knew nothing of a possible connection with the stabbings, so the 33-year-old Abuelazam was released on his own recognizance.

Police say he used a different vehicle during an attack on Aug. 5 but retrieved the SUV from police impound the next day and he was driving it later that evening when a surveillance camera captured images a green Blazer stalking a man who was hit with a hammer.

"Were it not for the courage of everyone to pick up the phone ... law enforcement would not have solved this case as quickly as it was solved," Leyton said.

Less than 45 minutes before Abuelazam was to board a Wednesday night flight to Israel, Michigan State Police contacted Atlanta police. They said Elias Abuelazam was at Gate E-17 and asked APD to hold him until Michigan investigators could get to Atlanta. Abuelazam's family lives about 20 minutes from Tel Aviv in Ramleh, a mixed Arab-Jewish town in the center of Israel.

    APD had him paged.
Abuelazam, carrying an expired Israeli passport, simply walked up to the ticket counter at the gate, where four uniformed Atlanta police officers were waiting to take him into custody around 9:30 p.m.

The Department of Homeland Security said Abuelazam was changing planes at Hartsfield-Jackson so he did not have to pass through the security checkpoints at the Atlanta airport.

He was arrested without incident and taken to the Atlanta city jail, according to Atlanta police. On Thursday morning in Flint, Mich., a judge signed a warrant for his arrest. Later Wednesday, Abuelazam was moved to the county jail, where he was being held Friday.
    [...]
Little is known about Abuelazam -- even his name, which is spelled four different ways in public documents. The Michigan Secretary of State records had it as Elian Abuelazam. It was Abu Elazam on his Michigan driver's license that expired in 1997. Records show he had it changed in 1995 to Elias Abullazam. And the Atlanta police report and the warrant the judge signed listed it as Elias Abuelazam.

He has lived in Virginia but records show his last home address in Grand Blanc, Mich. Various media reports said he worked the month of July at a party supply store outside Flint.
And he has an ex-wife living in Arlington, Texas, who said she had not talked to him recently and she was shocked by the arrest.

“I just heard about it,” Jessica Abu Elazam told the Detroit News.
Police have not said how the crimes were tied together.

Initially they thought Abuelazam allegedly was only targeting frail, elderly black men. But two white men and a 17-year-old have since been added to the list. Three victims were in Leesburg, Va., one was in Toledo, Ohio, and the rest were in Flint.
Leesburg police suspect the killings there were racially motivated.
"While this is a key step in the investigation, there are still many issues that need to be addressed before we identify this individual as the person responsible for this horrific crime spree," said Leesburg police officer Chris Jones.

Michigan and Ohio authorities declined to speculate on motives for the attacks

Survivors said their attacker would ask for directions or help with a broken-down car and then would suddenly pull a knife, stab them and drive away.

One such attack was the basis for the arrest warrant a judge signed Wednesday, accusing Abuelazam of assault with intent to murder in connection with a July 27 stabbing.
Antwoine Marshall, 26, of Flint, told police he was going into his apartment building when his attacker asked him for help fixing his car. Marshall was stabbed twice when he opened the hood, cutting three of his organs and leaving him with a scar from his chest to his pelvic area. Marshall said the FBI showed him a photograph of Abuelasam around 3 a.m. Thursday and he identified him as the man who attacked him.

The most recent attack was in Toledo. In that case, a custodian was stabbed while taking a smoke break outside Collingwood Presbyterian Church. He is expected to recover.
    [...]
The manager of the Kingwater Market told reporters Abuelazam worked the 3 p.m. to 2 a.m. shift there for less than a month and he had not been back since Aug. 1, telling his boss he was going to visit family. Manager Abdullah Farrah said FBI agents and Michigan police detectives viewed store video to get a good look at Abuelazam.

"He was friendly. He was a nice guy," manager Abdullah Farrah told reporters.

Farrah said Abuelazam was polite to all customers and he never treated African-Americans differently than white customers.
Regular customers knew the man as "Eli," according to the Flint Journal.
Kingswater Market customer Yolanda Randolph said Abuelazam was kind to her.
"“He’d park that green truck right out there on the corner,” she said. “He was always friendly. I’d buy my Lotto ticket from him and he’d say, ‘Good luck, sweetheart.’ ”

Serial Stabbing Suspect Had Charge Dropped in Israel
RAMLE, Israel (AP) -- Israeli police said Friday the suspect in stabbings in three states also was a suspect in a separate stabbing attack in Israel earlier this year, but charges were never pressed.
A senior police commander said Elias Abuelazam was believed to have stabbed a close acquaintance during an argument in a parked car in central Israel about six months ago. The commander said police dropped the case because the victim refused to cooperate with investigators.
    [...]
Abuelazam is suspected of attacking people in Michigan, Ohio and Virginia, leaving five people dead and 13 wounded. He was arrested Wednesday in Atlanta as he prepared to board a flight to his native Israel.
The 33-year-old man appeared in an Atlanta courtroom on Friday, agreeing during a brief hearing to return to Michigan to face charges in one of the attacks -- an attempted murder in a July 27 knife strike in Flint, Mich., that put the victim in a hospital for a week. Authorities said more charges were expected in the three states.
Abuelazam, who was expressionless as he responded to questions from Judge Richard Hicks, first told Hicks he wanted to stay in Georgia and face the charges. But Hicks told him he would have to return to Michigan if he wanted to fight them.
After Hicks explained the process further, Abuelazam agreed to waive an extradition fight, a process that could take months, and go back to Michigan.
"All right, then I'll do so," he said. "It sounds more logical to go right now than in 90 days."
But moments after the hearing ended, Abuelazam's attorney called Fulton County Superior Court to request another hearing. Hicks agreed to the request and scheduled another hearing for Friday afternoon in Atlanta.
In Ramle, a hardscrabble Israeli town southeast of Tel Aviv with a mixed Jewish-Arab population, residents in the Arab neighborhood where Abuelazam grew up expressed shock that the shy son of a respected family could be a suspect in such a gruesome crime spree.
"I wouldn't believe it even if I saw it with my own eyes," said Abuelazam's cousin, also named Elias Abuelazam. He said the news had devastated the suspect's mother. "I was there last night. She couldn't stand up. She took medicine to reduce her blood pressure. She was hysterical."
But the senior Israeli police official said Abuelazam was believed to be the attacker in the car stabbing months ago. The official said he and the close acquaintance got into an argument and Abuelazam pulled out a screwdriver and stabbed the other man in the face.
The official said Ramle police investigated, but because the victim refused to press charges, authorities could not arrest Abuelazam.

Suspected Serial Stabber a 'Jekyll and Hyde' Character

To many acquaintances, suspected serial stabber Elias Abuelazam was a "nice guy" who would chivalrously escort ladies to their cars. To others, he was a "frightening character" who abused his dogs and couldn't bear to be crossed.

Police believe the Israeli man carried out knife attacks in three states -- including stabbings in Michigan that left five people dead. But his ex-mother-in-law calls him "such a nice person."

"It's eerily akin to a modern-day 'Jekyll and Hyde' tale," journalist Nicholas Graham wrote in an article about the case for the Loudoun Times-Mirror of Virginia.

Authorities on Thursday announced the arrest of Abuelazam, who was taken into custody at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport as he was about to board a flight to Israel. The 33-year-old appeared today in an Atlanta courtroom, where he declined to fight extradition to Michigan.

Abuelazam is charged in Michigan with assault with intent to murder in a July 27 attack in Flint on a 26-year-old man. Investigators said more charges are likely as they seek to link Abuelazam to 18 stabbings in Michigan, Ohio and Virginia. All but two of the 18 victims were black. Investigators have said it's too early to tell whether race was a motive.

According to Israeli media reports, Abuelazam is a Christian Arab from the city of Ramla, east of Tel Aviv. Born Elias Abu El Azam on Aug. 28, 1976, he moved to the U.S. with his mother when he was a child. After residing in the States for a few years, the family reportedly moved back to Ramla.

His mother, Iyam al-Azzam, told Israel Radio that she did not believe the allegations against her son.

"Elias, my son, is a religious, God-fearing man who always assists anyone who needs help," al-Azzam said, speaking in Arabic.

An unidentified neighbor of the family in Ramla told the Israeli news agency Y-Net that Abuelazam was "a bulky man, a frightening character; someone you don't want to mess with."

A former classmate described Abu El Azam as a nice guy, but added that he seemed to go through changes later in life.

Suspect In Serial Killings Denied Bond
Elias Abuelazam Extradited From Georgia; Back In Court Next Tuesday
FLINT, Mich. -- A man suspected in 18 attacks in three states, including five fatal stabbings, was extradited to Michigan on Thursday and denied bond at his arraignment.

Elias Abuelazam, 33, left an Atlanta jail that Thursday morning and landed at a secluded runway far from the main terminal at Bishop International Airport in Flint around 12:15 p.m.

He was wearing a bulletproof vest, leg irons and handcuffs. He walked about 30 yards across the tarmac and was whisked away in a police van to the Genesee County Jail.

According to jail records, Abuelazam is 6 feet 5 inches tall, 280 pounds and wears a size 18 shoe.
You saw the movie 'Hannibal Lecter,' and you saw what precaution was taken with him. Maybe he doesn't eat people, but he's killed people. He's killed a lot of people," said Genessee County Sheriff Robert Pickell.

Abuelazam was escorted by two Michigan State Police sergeants and two troopers.

Abuelazam is charged with assault with intent to commit murder in the July 27 stabbing of a 26-year-old Flint man. It's one of 14 stabbings of men in the Flint area, northwest of Detroit. He's also suspected in similar stabbings in Virginia and Ohio.

He was video arraigned at 3 p.m. from the jail by judge Nathaniel C. Perry III.

Genesee County Prosecutor David Leyton asked that bond be denied for Abuelazam because he is an obvious flight risk.

"The defendant has already shown he will flee the country if he has the opportunity to," Leyton said.

On Aug. 11, investigators went to a market outside Flint where Abuelazam had worked for a month. A store video showed Abuelazam matched the description of the suspect. He had not been seen at work since Aug. 1, when he told people he was off to Virginia.

Using electronic records, investigators tracked Abuelazam to Atlanta's airport and arrested him at the boarding gate for a flight to Israel.

He grew up in Israel in a small Arab Christian community in Ramle, where he had been a suspect in a screwdriver stabbing earlier this year.

Abuelazam's pretrial hearing is set for 8:30 a.m. next Tuesday.

Pickell said Abuelazam would be kept in solitary confinement.

"He told me he was hungry, that he had not eaten since 2 a.m. this morning. I told him I would get him some food," Pickell said. "He also said that he expressed some concern with all the cameras being around. I told him he's going to have to get used to it."

During a news conference immediately following the arraignement, Leyton said he would be seeking the maximum punishment for Abuelazam -- life in prison without parole.

"I believe he is not sick, he is evil. In my years as a prosecutor it has become clear to me that some people are without conscience -- they are just bad to the core," Leyton said. "He is now where he belongs, in jail awaiting trial on this charge."

Leyton also said he expects more charges to be brought against Abuelazam. He said there is physical evidence, blood evidence, linked to other cases being processed at state labs.

"We will leave no stone unturned. At this time, we don't believe there is anyone else involved in these crimes," Leyton said.

Roughly every four days since late May, police said the killer approached men on lonely roads at night, asking for directions or help with a broken-down car. Then he'd pull out a knife, plunge it into his victim and speed away; in one case he used a hammer. The youngest victim was 15, the oldest 67.

Killed were David Motley, 31; Emmanuel A. Muhammad, 59; Darwin Marshall, 43; and Arnold R. Minor, 49; all of Flint, and Frank Kellybrew, 60, of Flint Township.

All died before Aug. 4, when Michigan authorities concluded the attacks were the work of one serial killer.

At least 15 of the 18 victims were black, but it was unclear whether the attacks were racially motivated.

Seventeen-year-old Etwan Wilson was in the courthouse Thursday. He is recovering from a stabbing attack that police are investigating as being connected to Abuelazam
I know it's the guy who stabbed me for a fact," Wilson said.

Wilson said Abuelazam's face is still fresh in his memory from the attack.

"Every night I had flash backs to what had happened, you know?" he said. "I just want to know if he's going to remember my face."

Wilson said he was disappointed that he didn't get to see Abuelazam in person.

Investigators also think Abuelazam may also be connected to another attack in Indianapolis, Ind.

Sources confirm with Local 4 that Abuelazam was in Indianapolis at the time of the stabbing, but are not saying when it happened. Authorities continue to investigate that attack.
