Michael Dwain Cypert, 36, was jailed July 2 following the attack on an initial complaint of first-degree arson, but his charges were updated to murder Wednesday based on the victim’s death July 16.
Prosecutors accuse Cypert of
pouring a half gallon of 100-proof vodka onto Robert Scott Nichols, 45, before
setting Nichols on fire with a lighter at a home in the 500 block of North Santa Fe Avenue.
Nichols was taken by ambulance to a hospital with burns on his face, torso, right arm and chest, according to arrest reports.
Assistant District Attorney Jack Thorp said the medical examiner’s report hasn’t been finished.
An affidavit signed by Cypert says he lives with a friend at the residence where the attack took place but does not pay rent.
