Man convicted in notorious animal cruelty case back in jail

CLEARWATER - Robert Bruce Pettyjohn, who was involved in one of the most notorious animal cruelty cases in the Tampa Bay area, was booked into the Pinellas County Jail this morning on charges he violated his probation.

Pettyjohn, now 27, had pleaded guilty to being part of a two-month animal cruelty spree in 2001 that spanned Hillsborough and Pinellas counties.

In 2002, Pettyjohn was sentenced to eight years in prison, to be followed by two years of community control and five years of probation.

He was released from prison on Oct. 17, 2008, and is supposed to undergo drug and psychiatric treatment, according to the terms of his probation.

Pettyjohn violated the terms of his probation by failing to give a urine sample once he showed up at a probation office in Hudson on March 9. He then refused to return for the urine sample the next day, and also failed to show up March 25 and April 24 for random drug tests.

Pettyjohn also falsely reported that he had paid the Department of Corrections $200, when he in fact had paid nothing and was $3,500 in arrears in payments, the affidavit says. He has also failed to pay restitution to the victims of his various crimes.

In addition to animal cruelty, Pettyjohn was convicted of grand theft, burglary and cocaine charges.

If he is found to have violated his probation, he could be sentenced to an additional 40 years in prison.

A Hillsborough County judge has ordered 27-year-old Robert Pettyjohn to prison for 10 years after he failed a drug test during a court hearing this morning.

Pettyjohn was on probation for one of the Bay area's most notorious animal abuse cases. In 2001, Pettyjohn and his friend Brandon Eldred tortured and killed animals in Pinellas and Hillsborough counties.

Pettyjohn and Eldred beat and gouged out the eye of a baby llama named Willie Wonka and beat, sodomized and killed an adult llama named Monopoly.

The two were also convicted of using bows and arrows to shoot and torture bulls in Hillsborough County. One of the injured animals died.

Pettyjohn has a history of probation violations, including skipping and failing drug tests. This morning in court, Pettyjohn assured Judge Daniel Perry that he would be able to pass a drug test.

Judge Perry ordered an immediate test, which Pettyjohn promptly failed. There were tears in the courtroom from Pettyjohn's pregnant wife as Judge Perry imposed a 10-year sentence.

I remember reading about this case.... I knew there was no way this guy was going to make it through probation. Not with drug and psychological issues.
The scary thing is...he was only sentenced to 10 years, three years of which he has credit for already from his prior prison term. If he behaves himself, with credit for time served, he could be out in five and a half years. And when he gets out, there will be no supervision this time. He will be free to come and go as he pleases. And that scares me.

I am beyond happy that he is going to prison, and although she doesn't know it, his wife should be, too.

There is a correlation between people that kill or abuse animals and those that abuse children. Her child will be safer going to visit daddy with a cage or sheet of glass between them.

He really was a horrible person in high school ... every once in a while I check up on him and see where he is at.

What he did in 2001 was sick and he did his time for it, hard time. For all we know, he is a different person, a better person. I'm not saying he is anyone I would want to hang out with, but he might not be a drain on society any more. If the only thing in his system was marijuana then the 10 year sentence is bullshit. Our prisons are way overcrowded with guys charged with this same kind of shit. We have contractors who build prisons lobbying the government for stricter and stricter penalties for lesser and lesser crimes because it is money in their pocket.

I think society would be better off with a guy who smokes marijuana to calm his nerves than the alternative....
Now we have another child in this country growing up without a father. We have a guy rotting in prison who will come out more violent than he went in and we're paying for it.

He did not do his time. He was let out early. While marijuana may not be that high on the list of "no-no"s, he proved that he still didn't want to live by any rules but his own.

He's not a better person - different maybe, but not better. He was given a set of rules to follow and chose not to. He couldn't refrain from using drugs for a few years. He lied to the court, his lawyer, everyone until he was proven a liar. He didn't pay his restitution, he didn't pay his fines, he skipped tests, failed multiple tests, and assorted other things that says he didn't give a shit about the rules. Basic pond scum behavior.

He made his choices. He can live with them (and Bubba).

Robert Pettyjohn, while handcuffed to a gurney told the paramedic he was looking for an object to use to stab the other paramedic in the heart. Pettyjohn also told the deputy the "he would see him through a rifle scope one day" and promptly spit on him according to other sheriff records.

After further investigation, it was discovered that on April 13, 1998, Pettyjohn assaulted a 17-year-old in the neck with a pen in the high school's gym area. Pettyjohn told the juvenile that he had an icepick, was just messing with him, and left the area laughing with his friends.

In October 2001, witnesses told Investigators that Pettyjohn and Eldred had killed a neighbors pet goat named Peter and buried the remains on Pettyjohns property. In a sworn statement one witness stated the goat was used as a living pinata, tortured and killed.

20 year old David Gary Bowers, an acquaintance of Pettyjohns and Eldred, stated in a sworn statement that Pettyjohn would shoot squirrels with a BB gun, then cut their tails off and he would pin them to a wall in his garage.

Another acquaintance, 19 year old Alexander Gregg, told investigators that he knew Pettyjohn had attacked the llamas after reading about Willie Wonka's eye being gouged out in the newspaper. He knew because Pettyjohn had discussed popping out someone's eye to Gregg.

They need more extreme situations to get the "high" that comes from this behavior. If he hasn't already moved on to doing this to people he just hasn't been given enough time.
Ever heard of Ted Bundy, David Berkowitz("Son of Sam") and Jeffrey Dahmer?! Terrible monsters all three of them and they all started out with animals.

I know that animals are killed for food all the time, but for the most part the animals are killed swiftly so there is no suffering.
When people will torturem rape, and murder an animal, they have no business being in society. The same goes for pedophiles, rapists, baby beaters, and murderers.
