The incident happened at 317 N. New Hope Road in Gastonia.
Karl Anthony Delaney, 42, told police his step-son put pesticide in the ground coffee mix in which he and the suspect's mother used for coffee.
According to the police report, the pesticide was placed in the coffee sometime between Sunday at 11 p.m. and Monday at 6 a.m.
Police obtained a warrant against Calvin Robert Sheppard III, 18. He now faces a charge of felony aggravated assault.
Sheppard was placed in the Gaston County Jail and is being held under a $10,000 secured bond.
