Miranda Dalton wasn't going to let the death of Paul Maidman stop her partying ways

A woman accused in a deadly DUI crash is caught partying at a bar. Miranda Dalton had been free on bail since the deadly crash last month. Not only was she caught at a bar, but the person who caught her is a member of the victim's family.

"It's almost emotionally, it crushes you inside. Where's the justice in any of this,"asks Dawn Fullerton.

She is still grieving the death of her brother Paul Maidman. On April 8th Paul Maidman was going to make copies for his online class. He got into his Buick Century and was waiting at a traffic light at Cheyenne near Soaring Gulls, between Cimarron and Durango. Police say that's when Dalton's Jeep Grand Cherokee slammed into the back of Maidman's car, killing him.

Dalton was less than one mile from her home at the time of the accident.

Police arrested and charged Miranda Dalton with drunk driving. She posted bail on the condition she stop drinking and wear an ankle bracelet that monitors alcohol consumption. That was short lived though.

"I had gotten calls that she was out at different bars," says Fullerton.

May 1, Dawn Fullerton went to Dylan's Roadhouse on Boulder Highway to see the 29 year old for herself. What she saw was unexpected.

"She was wearing a long haired black wig and glasses," she said.

Fullerton says pictures show Dalton dancing, sitting in one man's lap and wearing the same outfit she wore the night her brother died.

Before Paul's sister could testify, Dalton admitted she was going out to bars with her friends.

"Obviously you have no remorse, you have respect for law or humans or anything. And the Judge remanded her to custody. It felt good to watch those handcuffs go on her," said Fullerton.

I was just reminded of this story while looking at an article about the one year aniversary of another drunk driving crash and the update about the drunken #@! who killed Melodie Osheroff and severly injured her father having karma visit him.
One can only hope she'll get some of the same treatment. It's disguisting that not even a month goes by and she's out living it up and partying with friends without a care in the world. And of course she has a prior DUI conviction.
Since then, she's asked twice to get her bail reduced, as she needs time to prepare her young daughter for the fact she'll be going to prison(her own fault). Umm, you had that chance before sweetheart, and decided going out to bars and drinking with your friends was more important than following bail conditions that kept you out of jail and with your daughter. Never mind the fact what it says about you as a person. You clearly have no respect for the court or the fact you took a man's life.

I am Paul's girlfriend.

On April 9th of this year, Miranda Dalton's irresponsible and reckless decision to drive while under the influence changed my life forever.

Paul was a person the rest of us could only strive to become. He was a decorated Air Force veteran, having served our country for 8 years before being honorably discharged. He spent 2 of those years in Japan, and another in Saudi Arabia during post 9/11 times. He continued to contribute to the success of our country by going to work for a government contractor for the Department of Energy. He was also a full time student, working towards earning his masters degree. He was a humanitarian, reaching out to anyone in need. If you ever met Paul, you were his friend for life, and he would do anything for his friends. Paul's goal in life was to make the world a better place, and I have no doubt he would have done just that, had Miranda Dalton not ended his life.

Paul no longer has a life to live. He was young and happy, and as his girlfriend, I am certain that he was no where close to being through with life. We had been high school sweethearts, and remainded in close contact throughout his Air Force career. After 10 years, the timing was finally right for us to reconnect, and be together. We were planning vacations, and hoped to earn our degrees together. We intended to eventually get married, and raise a family. He wanted to work in government until he retired. All of the hopes and dreams we shared as a happy young couple with a bright future have been destroyed at the hands of another drunk driver.

I've been overwhelmed by the support of MADD, and that of Paul's family and friends, collectively called Team Paul. We are the legacy he created for himself, without ever knowing what Team Paul would one day become, and the vast meaning it would hold for us all.

This year, someone will die in a drunk driving related crash about every 45 minutes. Paul was the 21st DUI related death in Las Vegas this year, and now only 4 months later, that number has reached 45 deaths this year. Let Paul's story be an example to others who might otherwise make the irresponsible choice to drink and drive. On average, a person has driven drunk about 87 times before their first arrest. This was Miranda's second DUI. On my count, thats an average of 174 intoxicated road trips, each one holding potential of injuring or killing an innocent person. In 10 days, I will be in a Las Vegas courtroom to witness Miranda receiving her sentence, which could be up to 20 years.

There is no restitution that can give me back what I have lost. Nothing will replace the love I shared with my boyfriend, or the wedding we will never get to plan together. Nothing will make me forget about the children we'd planned to have, that I will never get to meet, their lives ended before they ever began. Nothing can clear my memory of Paul's sister, calling me to tell me that he had been needlessly killed 12 hours earlier by a drunk driver. Nothing will make me feel safe while I am in constant fear that my loved ones and I are sharing the road with impaired drivers that might end our lives at any moment. My entire life was shattered in the instant that Miranda Dalton struck Paul's car at over 80 miles per hour without ever hitting her brakes. I will spend my life wondering what could have been.

This has literally been my worst nightmare come true. It's something that we all think will never happen to us, but now it has never been more clear that it can happen to anyone. It could even happen to any of you. None of us are immune to this, and in fact, one in three of us will be involved in an alcohol related crash in our lifetime. The next time you consider getting behind the wheel under the influence, I hope you take a moment to remember Paul Maidman, and then call a cab!

As for your victim impact statement in court, I believe what you just wrote to us is powerful enough for all to hear.
On a side note, I've seen clueless and enabling friends before, but Miranda's rank up there as the dumbest and most enabling ones of all time. She didn't make a mistake, she made a choice to drink and drive and kill someone. It angers me how they support someone who clearly doesn't care about the fact she killed a man or the suffering of those he left behind. Her actions when she was let out on bail shows that all she cares about is clubbing and getting drunk, the suffering of others be damned.
It also angers me they have the gall to try and use her daughter as a sympathy ploy. She had time to spend with her daughter (a luxury Paul's family didn't get) and chose instead to defy the court's orders and show everyone what a sociopath she is.
Eight to twenty isn't enough punishment.... or enough protection to the public. People like her don't change.

I really don't have any words to convey how sorry I am, or that this had to happen to you at all. It was senseless and 100% preventable. I agree with Ninja that there is no real just punishment for a crime like this.

Keep your head up and keep on because I am sure that's what Paul would want you to do. My deepest condolences to you and everyone that had the pleasure of knowing and loving Paul.

I did send a Victim Impact letter in - This was pretty much exactly what it said. I'm not certain if they are letting us speak during the hearing, but hopefully the judge and the parole board have already heard what I have to say. Thanks for your support.

She showed exactly what kind of person she was when she was out on bail. Instead of taking care of her daughter or warning about drunk driving or just laying low,she decides to go out and party without a care in the world. It sickens me.

Newsflash to her friends, she killed someone and it wasn't a bad decsion, it was a selfish choice to put everyone else on the road at risk. Her behavior while out on bail showed how "remorseful" she was. She only cares about partying, the loved ones of Paul and her own daughter be damned.
