His body likely came to rest in the area because of recent flash-flooding, according to a press release.
Agents from the FBI, sheriff's detectives and a forensic anthropologist are in the midst of a criminal investigation as they recover the boy's body.
Meanwhile, Jeff Newnum, search and rescue coordinator for the Sheriff's Office, headed a search that took rescuers through pools in the area and across rugged terrain with helicopters, bloodhounds, horseback riders and ATVs.http://www.prescottaz.com/main.asp?S...rticleID=84145The Sheriff's Office questioned local sex offenders and cast a bigger net that included searching area landfill and trash dumpsites, according to YCSO spokesman Dwight D'Evelyn.
The FBI and YCSO went through more than 200 tons of waste material at the Gray Wolf Landfill in Dewey-Humboldt.
As deputies came up empty in their search, Lt. Tom Boelts of the Criminal Investigation Bureau said at an Aug. 2 press conference that he was "confident" that there was no body in the search area and he believed Sylar was taken from the campsite and was dead.
Very disturbing.
I am so PO'd at the police investigation. Maybe I shouldn't be but really....2 miles out and all that 'searching' with no results? Who ever tried to hide him did a pretty good job for all that 'searching' they performed. Ugh I am in agony as to who did this? Was it the adoptive mom???? Grr... ANSWERS!

i thought this was very interesting.
Authorities believe someone tried to hide the remains and they ended up in the wash after recent flash flooding."Somebody didn't want us to find him," sheriff's Capt. David Rhodes said.
I want to know who took this sweet childs life from him, stole it so selfishly. And there is nothing that can explain the why, nothing that will ever make sense. I feel bad for the grandmother I saw in several pictures and the video, her eyes, you can see the love she had for him.
My heart breaks for you littlest Syler as I see my own son about to turn three, and realize you will never see three or others never more.
Angel kisses little one, heaven's light always...

http://www.azcentral.com/news/articl...rant-abrk.htmlA search warrant released Friday shed light on the hours before the disappearance of a 2-year-old Flagstaff boy whose body authorities believe was found in a wash weeks after he went missing.
[...]
Judge Mary Hamm of Seligman Justice Court signed a warrant July 25 allowing the Yavapai County Sheriff's Office to search property belonging to Sylar's custodial mother, Christina Priem, and her mother, Nancy Collins.
Priem and Collins had been visiting the campsite with Sylar, Priem's son and daughter, and a 14-year-old family friend.
The search warrant said campers reported seeing either Priem or Collins be "verbally abusive" to the boy and "push Sylar to the ground because he could not find his shoes." Campers also told investigators they heard the child crying between 7:30 and 9:30 p.m. but could not hear anything after.
Priem's daughter, 11, told detectives that earlier in the afternoon, she saw Sylar staggering and then could not wake him, the warrant said.
Records indicate the family friend told detectives he heard Sylar had got into Collins' lockbox and ingested a muscle relaxant. Collins told detectives she knew of another time when Sylar had ingested her medication. She said her lockbox was kept in her car, but other family members told detectives it could have been in the tent.
Collins admitted to smoking pot the same day Sylar went missing, the search warrant showed.
Records sent to the Sheriff's Office by Flagstaff Police Department revealed that "both mother and grandmother have an extensive history with the police involving drugs, assault, child abuse and child neglect."
No one has been named as a suspect, and a reward of up to $3,500 is being offered for information leading to the arrest and conviction of anyone involved in Sylar's death.

I had a child that loved me, he would play with my hair and I was so fucked up in the head I would slap his hand away and say dont touch me, I couldnt and still cant stand for anyone to touch me, everyone here acts like they are such perfect parents, I regret what i did but I couldnt help myself, now that Im older I know I fucked up and should have just let him kiss me and play with my hair, I have regrets, very much regrets, cant change it now. This is the cycle of abuse, you can break out of it, but not until you are older and understand how life is, some can break out young others cant, Im so fucking sorry for what i did to my kids and they know it, because I tell them daily but I think the cycle is broken because I see these sons with their kids being kind and they tell me Mama. I know, and then talk kindly to their kids, Im so sick of this world, and I am the only one being honest here, we all fuck up and make mistakes. They still love me and try to make my old age easier... Im so sorry...![]()

VXIII, I want to first say how brave I think you are. Brave for admitting to your short comings as a person and a parent, and how in awe I am that you can be so honest. I also want to say I don't think I know anyone here that THINKS they are a PERFECT parent. At least, I'm not aware of any and I am friends with some here.
There is no such thing as a perfect parent, it simply does not exist in the way the word defines it. You want to know what I think perfect is?
a parent who learns from mistakes and does their best never to repeat them again, I'll say again, LEARNS from them.
Lord knows, I have my share of days I wish I could do-over. Because of the way I was raised (abuse/neglect), I was scared to become a parent and repeat the cycle again, never sure if I could be what I wanted and needed to be as a parent to my children. And the God honest truth is, there is not one day I don't think on how I can be a better parent than the day before. And I can tell you, I am my harshest critic, guess its hard to let go of some things.
Breaking a cycle from abuse is hard shit. I think many of us know that for fact here and I've read enough posts to know that many have admitted to mistakes time and again. Hell, I've posted enough on my own mistakes when it comes to parenting, surely, I could be called a careless or dare say negligent mother in some circles. But you know, what kind of parent you want to be for your children, is a personal relationship between you and your children. And I can tell you I know a lot of fine parents here because of mistakes they have shared on AND success, because of that I continue to learn.
What happened to you before that has left you with regrets only tells me that you have done much soul searching, and care enough today to learn from that and remedy as you can and move on. Don't beat yourself up over what you read here, no one here really knows who you are day in and day out. Only YOU can be your harshest judge and only YOU know the real truth. I guess what I want to say if it's worth anything, I think you are the real deal, a shinning example of someone who has beat the cycle and said to yourself one day, no more.
I completely respect you for sharing with us something I know wasn't easy to do.
My heart breaks for little Syler as I'm assuming he is no longer alive. He was cheated of a fair chance at life EVERYONE deserves a fair chance at happiness especially those most innocent and vulnerable.

All these kids are cheated of a fucking life, they cant grow up or have babies. I talk to Nixmary Browns brother who is about 14 now, he is smart and wise, I just feel bad talking to a kid over internet so pretty much keep it to the basics, but if anyone ever wants to know how it feels, he will tell you, upfront, in person and he still loves his sister... he has a new life now with puppies and is growing up, he will be a man in a few years, from what I can see, he will be a gentle man.

Not that it's any surprise:
http://www.abc15.com/dpp/news/region...d-sylar-newtonNewly released autopsy results confirm skeletal remains found near a northern Arizona campground in August are those of 2-year-old Sylar Newton, who vanished July 24.
Yavapai County Sheriff's Office spokesman Dwight D'Evelyn said detectives last week received DNA results from the human remains, which were found at the bottom of a wash less than two miles from the campground where Sylar was last seen.
The families of the boy have reportedly been notified of the identification.
[...]
D'Evelyn said an increased cash reward has been offered for information regarding the case. The reward, now set at $8,000, has been provided by both Yavapai Silent Witness and the FBI.

Custodial mom of Ariz. toddler found dead arrested
http://www.boston.com/news/nation/ar...dead_arrested/FLAGSTAFF, Ariz.—Authorities investigating the death this summer of an Arizona toddler whose body was found in a wash have arrested his custodial mother on suspicion of child abuse.
Tweet Be the first to Tweet this!..Yahoo! Buzz ShareThis .
But it was unclear Monday if the charges involved the boy who died or some other child.
Yavapai County sheriff's officials arrested 36-year-old Christina Priem in Flagstaff on Monday on felony counts of involving a minor in a drug offense.
[..]
The arrest stems from an investigation into the disappearance and death of 2-year-old Sylar Newton. The boy was camping with Priem and her family near Rimrock in July when they reported him missing. A distant relative found his remains weeks later.
Witnesses at the campground told detectives the toddler appeared to be under the influence of drugs or medication.

Sylar Newton's custodial mother, grandmother charged
Additional charges were announced Thursday night in the ongoing investigation into the death of 2-year-old Sylar Newton, according to a media release.
Yavapai County detectives are seeking additional charges against Sylar's custodial mother, Christina Priem, 36, for child abuse when done intentionally or knowingly, the release said. She is currently being held on a $300,000 bond.
Nancy Collins, 57, Priem's mother, went missing Thursday afternoon, the release said. Collins faces a single charge of child abuse when done recklessly.
Officials said the charges against the mother and grandmother relate directly to the events leading to Sylar's death while in their custody.
The release says detectives have not been able to locate Collins and are seeking her on a child abuse warrant.
Collins is described as a White female, 57 years old and approximately 5 feet tall.
A reward is available for anyone whose tip leads to Collins' arrest.![]()

Priem, Collins may seek grand jury remand in Sylar's death
http://verdenews.com/main.asp?Sectio...rticleID=40270CAMP VERDE - Christina Priem and her mother Nancy Collins were back in Yavapai County Superior Court Tuesday on a case management conference linked to the death of 2-year-old Sylar Newton at the Beaver Creek Campground last summer.
Priem and Collins' attorneys now suggest they will to ask that the case be sent back to the Grand Jury.
The custodial mother of Newton and Collins are charged with child abuse and drug offenses linked to the child's death.
Even though they appeared in court together, Priem, 36, and Collins, 57, have separate attorneys. Michael Shaw represents Collins, but Flagstaff private attorney Tony Gonzales has now withdrawn from representing Priem and Deputy Public Defender Robert Gundacker has assumed her defense.
Shaw asked the Superior Court Judge Tina Ainley for at least 30 days before a pre-trial conference is set in order to review the "significant discovery" he has now received.
Gundacker told the judge that he has received the discovery as well, but complained that "there is so much that has been redacted," that it is difficult to follow the chain of events. That black ink is "causing a hindrance" said Gundacker. He said "every non-victim's name has been redacted" and there were dozens of people and officers involved in the search. He emphasized, "even the search map is redacted."
The judge ordered that the attorneys be provided with a non-redacted copy of the discovery.
The judge asked Shaw if he has determined whether the case should be dubbed "complex," which would allow a longer timeframe for the trial process but Shaw says he is not ready to ask that yet. Ainley said that question would be decided at the case management conference she set for March 1 at 9 a.m.
Both women have claimed that Sylar wandered away from the campsite in the middle of the night.
After an exhaustive search of the surrounding area, Sylar's body was not found until three weeks later, about a mile away. The Sheriff's Office has ruled the case a homicide.
Priem is held pending $300,000 bond on drug and abuse charges. Collins is held on $75,000 bond on child abuse the child abuse charge.

Sorry, I had not seen this before until someone pointed it out to me today so didnt answer, @Rockin Ma I dont have an answer why I babied one over the others, it could have been because he was the baby, that is something I dont have an honest answer for, could also be my own family was the same with the younger ones being treated like kids and the older ones as slaves and also having been around here long enough now I can see most of the people here are doing the best they can to raise their children the best they can even though some of them themselves have been abused and beaten as kids also, if you knew me I have a knack for writing things the wrong way and offending someone when that wasnt my intention...

Trial starts May 30th 2012. Pre-trial motions heard.
http://verdenews.com/main.asp?Sectio...rticleID=47417Neither Christina Priem, nor her mother Nancy Collins spoke Tuesday morning while their attorneys argued pre-trial motions to preclude evidence or testimony in the child abuse case over Sylar Newton.
[...]
The afternoon of the day before little Sylar vanished, as Christiana Priem's mother told investigators, Sylar got into her "lockbox" while the adults were taking a nap. The small decorative box was kept closed with a screwed-on window-latch, inside which Nancy Collins kept the prescription seizure medicine Klonopin, marijuana, paraphernalia and methadone.
Prosecutor Dana Collins Tuesday read from an investigator's interview with Collins, who gave varying accounts of how much Klonopin Sylar may have ingested. Collins reportedly said she knocked a half-pill out of the boy's mouth, which she took later.
The child was never taken to a doctor. During a prior incident, Priem had seen how emergency room doctors had treated the situation in Flagstaff when Sylar ingested Klonopin and decided not to call 911.
Several hours passed during which Sylar fell on the ground and acted groggy, and water was splashed in his face to refresh him, and that he leaned against a chair. But then he reportedly was alert at dinner.
The adults woke just before 2 a.m. the following morning and found that Sylar had vanished, prompting a lengthy search.
Priem's attorney Robert Gundacker, Tuesday, asked the court to preclude first-hand testimony regarding Klonopin, since, he said, the defendant Collins was the only one who actually saw Sylar and the pills at the same time. The minor children witnesses and others' testimony was based on what Collins had said about the incident, he said.
Gundacker also asked Judge Michael Bluff to preclude co-defendant Collins' statements about Klonopin. A third motion would preclude any statements by the State that the defendants concealed the victim's body on the grounds.
Finally, Gundacker says Priem is joining a motion by Collins to dismiss the child abuse charge.
Michelle Shaw, representing Collins, agreed with her co-attorney, "the State doesn't have any independent evidence of Klonopin ingestion, It's a black hole, a mystery," she said.
Shaw stated, "There is no evidence that either of these women did anything to cause harm to Sylar. I am not opposed to remanding the case back to the Grand Jury for more realistic charges."
Gundacker agreed, "We don't have any autopsy, we don't have toxicology, we don't know how Sylar died."
"They are asking you to be the decider," Deputy County Attorney Dana Owens told Judge Bluff of the defense attorneys. "The Grand Jury has already made a determination that there is reason to charge. I can give you a laundry list of pieces of evidence."
In terms of the motion on "discarding the body," Owens argued, "We are not saying they killed him or dumped his body. We don't know how he got there."
Judge Bluff made no rulings on the motions, but agreed to a 10-day extension for additional motions based on some interviews that are still pending.
The attorneys suggested that another motion would face the judge that would sever the trials of the two women, forcing separate trials for each.

http://verdenews.com/main.asp?Sectio...rticleID=47663The woman who had hoped to adopt Sylar Newton, Christina Priem of Flagstaff, has pleaded guilty to two counts of child abuse. Two-year-old Sylar disappeared from the Beaver Creek Campground in July 2010 and his body was found in creek a mile away, two weeks later.
The Yavapai County Attorney's Office says Priem could face from 10 to 32.75 years in prison for the two crimes.
Christina Priem's mother, Nancy Collins, who is a co-defendant, could also reach a plea agreement.
[...]
The key charge for which Priem will be sentenced is child abuse per domestic violence, a Class-2 felony that is a "dangerous crime against children in the first degree."
That offense carries a prison sentence of 10 to 24 years in prison with a "presumptive term" of 17 years. A special condition, required by the plea, is that the sentence be served as "flat time," meaning that Priem would not be eligible for early release.
The 38-year-old mother of two is facing two separate filings. An original arrest charged her with involving a minor in a drug offense with three counts of providing marijuana to her son twice and to a friend of her son, who joined the camping party.
Those three marijuana offenses will be dismissed. However, a fourth count was stipulated for child abuse by domestic violence, a class-3 felony. That offense is punishable by a prison sentence from 2.5 to 8.75 years with a presumptive term of 3.5 years. In this case, however, if the judge agrees, probation is available to Priem of up to her lifetime after her release from prison.
Another condition of the plea agreement requires that the two sentences be served consecutively -- back to back, rather than at the same time -- which gives the possibility of the nearly 33 years.
The sentence will also require that Priem be responsible for restitution for economic loss of up $50,000 to Charity Newton, Sylar's birth mother, and to the guardian or parent of her own son and the boy's friend.
Charity Newton reportedly had given up Sylar first to Christina's sister and then to her.
Judge Bluff will sentence the woman June 4. She will be credited for time served, since she and her mother were jailed in December 2010.

How did the baby get into the locked box anyway? Reality is merely an illusion, albeit a very persistent one...
Has there been any information out on why charity newton gave up her child? If it was because she couldn't care for him, how do we call her a pig?
Ww certainly can't say on a abuse story " why didn't they give the child up if they didn't want them or couldn't care for them " and then turn around and fault a mother for just that? How did sylar pass from the sister to the killer?
I need to reread this thread before I can pass judgement on the mother.

http://www.dcourier.com/main.asp?Sec...ticleID=106378Hot on the heels of a plea agreement accepted by her co-defendant, Nancy Collins has also taken a plea for her role in the disappearance and death of 2-year-old Sylar Newton in 2010.
Collins, 57, pleaded guilty to one count of child abuse per domestic violence.
Christina Priem, 37, of Flagstaff - Collins' daughter and Sylar's custodial mother - last week pleaded guilty to two counts of child abuse in the case, avoiding several related drug charges.
[...]
Collins faces up to 3.75 years in prison on the child abuse charge, a class 4 felony. She could also be sentenced to lifetime probation.
Priem could be sentenced to as long as 32.5 years in prison, followed by lifetime probation.
Sentencing will be on June 4.
