Good thing to at least have a mother who gave him to ppl who seem to care for him and can provide for him. More than I could say for a good 92% of mothers we find on here...

The hunt for 2-year-old Syler Newton is into its fourth day, and the search area is about to get bigger.

Dwight D'Evelyn, spokesman for the Yavapai County Sheriff's Office, reported Tuesday that investigators plan to widen the search area to make sure searchers are being as thorough as possible.

"(The search is) moving forward, but these things take time," he said.

While the investigation and search into Syler's disappearance continues, people such as Larry Lowe are vital to search efforts.

Lowe, a recruiter with the Yavapai County Jeep Posse, said the 48 active volunteer members do practice searches and classroom exercises at least once a month.

Topographical map reading and using GPS are some of the tools they rely on, according to Lowe, who said another important tool is their 4-wheel-drive vehicles that they load with food, clothing and first-aid equipment.

All that prepares them for missions like helping to find Syler in all types of terrain and weather.

"Basically, what it amounts to is you're equipped for all conditions at all times," he said.

That said, tracking down a missing child is different than looking for an adult, Lowe said.

That's because adults usually know to bring the right clothes and other items for hikes or camping trips.

And Lowe said adults use their reasoning and judgment skills, something young children like Syler don't.

"Kids just go, and they go until they exhaust themselves and then they'll hunker down someplace until they rest up or they are found or something of that nature," he said. "Children don't realize they're lost, adults do."

According to police, Priem said the boy had been sleeping next to her, her mother and Priem's 12-year-old daughter before he disappeared. Priem's 14-year-old son and his friend were sleeping in an adjacent tent. The family had been camping at the site since Friday evening.

D'Evelyn said that Priem and her mother, Nancy Collins, have both taken polygraph tests and have been cooperative with police. Both Priem's and and Collins' cars were taken by detectives to be examined, said D'Evelyn.

I hate to even say this but the 14 yo and the friend sleeping in the adjacent tent to Syler's tent, has the "friend" been checked out? its not unheard of babies being assaulted by predators 14 yrs of age and even younger.

I wonder if they passed the polygraph test? the cars were reported taken days earlier.
Curious why and if they found any evidence pointing to a crime.

I still think the most likely scenario is Syler wondered off and fell in the creek, the tent not being secured well. At 4 days now whatever happened I don't see him being alive at this point. I hope I am so wrong on that, makes me so sad he's my sons age.

Oh, man. Not another one. I hope Syler is found safe and sound. Silva, I wondered the same thing about the teenagers. There was recently a story in the news about a stepbrother or half brother who raped and killed his little sister and burned the house down or something. You just never know any more. Hoping Syler is okay.

The search is a conundrum for Jeff Newnum and his crew.

A search of five pools in the area also came up empty, according to Newnum, who said they have not found any trace of blood from an animal trying to take the toddler away.

Mountain lions, insects, lizards, bears and coyotes live in the area.

"We have not seen any type of predatory attack in our search area," he said.

And by the map it looks like the camping site is close to a road. Are they thinking he could have been abducted?

I cant imagine how the mom feels, i lost my son once for about 5 minutes, was outside with him and my husband who was working on the car. Asked hubby to watch my son while i ran inside real fast. Came back out about 2 minutes later and he was nowhere in sight. Hubby thought he was in the house with me. I was in tears running up and down the road screaming for him. Turns out he was at the neighbors house playing with her little girl. The neighbor thought my hubby heard her say he was coming over to play. I about died in those few minutes. She must be going through hell, that poor woman.

I think baby Caleb fell in the river OR was dumped. My God how my mind thinks. I just can't help it after reading on here for so long.

I just want him found. He's not likely alive but his body out there somewhere never to be found is so wrong. This is all so wrong.

Searchers Refuse to Give Up on Missing Ariz. Toddler

(July 29) -- It has been nearly five days since anyone has seen Syler Newton, a 2-year-old boy who vanished from a northern Arizona campsite on Sunday. But authorities say they are not yet ready to give up hope.

"It is still a search-and-rescue effort," Yavapai County Sheriff's Office spokesman Dwight D'Evelyn told AOL News. "[There have been] cases where there is survivability up to 96 hours, and we're right in that territory. There is no plan to terminate the search.

Temperatures in the area since Syler went missing have averaged in the upper 70s. The summer heat, combined with high humidity, has made the search difficult. And the clock is ticking.

"A lot depends on [a child's] physical health, the terrain, predators [mountain lions, bears and coyotes] and the weather," says Gary Peterson, former deputy director of Texas EquuSearch, a missing-person search-and-recovery group. "Young children like that can be pretty resilient.

According to Peterson, small children are typically found within a mile of where they were last seen, often in a place where they can crawl in for shelter.

Sheriff's deputies, along with search-and-rescue personnel and assisting units from the Coconino County Sheriff's Office, today expanded their search grid beyond the initial five-mile sweep around the campsite. Aerial searches are being conducted over a broad area, and dive teams are checking local waterways.

Meanwhile, detectives from the Criminal Investigations Bureau are continuing to examine property and vehicles that were recovered from the campsite. The vehicles are a Toyota Camry and a Toyota Corolla, which belong to Priem and her mother, Nancy Collins, respectively.

If we had some indication he has been taken or where he is, obviously we wouldn't be out here," D'Evelyn said. "They're evaluating all this day by day, but as it stands now, the search will continue."

I don't see how little Syler could be alive, I really don't unless he was abducted and is being cared for. The wait is grueling as is in any missing cases, this is why I can't do these very well.....I hate NOT knowing! Be found Syler, alive and well!

Just saw this article on the Arizona Republic newspaper website. Today, investigators started searching through a landfill near Flagstaff looking for clues in the case of Sylar Newton. This is made my heart hurt and my tummy do a flip flop. I hope he is NOT in there.
Also, there have been a ton of storms and flooding around the Flagstaff area. I am feeling more and more like this boy will not be found.

A 2-year-old boy reported missing from Beaver Creek Campground late last month is presumed dead, and the case has now turned into a criminal investigation, the Yavapai County Sheriff's Office said Monday.

The Sheriff's Office announced at a Monday news conference that investigators do not believe the boy, Sylar Newton, wandered off of his own volition.

Though the Sheriff's Office scaled back some of its search operations Saturday, it is still conducting a "limited continuous search" and will pursue any leads from the public about the boy's fate.

Based on evidence at the scene, Sheriff's investigators believe he was taken from the campsite, but they are uncertain whether he was dead or alive when taken, officials said.

However, they made clear that they believe the boy is now dead because they couldn't find any trace of him near the campsite, and if he wandered away, statistics suggest someone that age has a slim chance of surviving past the first 96 hours.

Investigators have not found any credible leads after a nine-day search of landfills and dumpsters around the campsite. Even bloodhounds were used to search the campground to no avail.

Investigators continue to interview people, including family members, about the boy's disappearance, but say they have not yet identified any suspects in the case.

The only other option is someone opened the tent and removed him. Pretty frikking brave for an unknown predator!

That only leaves the kids in the tent or the soon to be stepmom to remove him. Probably after something disgusting happened. Not like they have bears to drag a kid off in AZ.

REALLY made me so sad to read this, but not surprised on the news, call me jaded, but you know given the time he's been gone. Now it's just a matter of narrowing down just who took this precious child, and the why. I get this terrible feeling he may have been fussing that night keeping them awake, someone took the liberty in quieting him. OR my other feeling that one of those there did something depraved to him and disposed of him.

I wonder if someone there knows something like someone up at the middle of the night at an odd hour, or heard something unusual, covering for someone? This turns yet into another mystery like little Kyron,(tho that one is more of a crazed circus), not sure I can hold out to the end....it's so heart wrenching.

Presumable dead, yes, but the bloodhounds failed to detect his scent so I'm hoping this means he's alive, perhaps with someone that wanted him for his own, and not for depraved reasons. Of the other 25 people there at least one knows something.
Christina Priem's rap sheet is not making me feel any easier about who might have done this, and I really don't want to read that it was the mother, either one of them who did something to this sweet child.

After nine days of searching, Sheriff Steve Waugh and two leaders of his investigative team faced a sea of reporters Monday afternoon to update the process.

The search was scaled back Saturday to what Search Commander Sgt. Jeff Newnum calls a "limited continuous search. It will go on as long as we have areas to search."

Lt. Tom Boelts of the Criminal Investigation Bureau said, "We are confident that there is no body in the search area" and "we believe the child was taken from the camp site and is no longer alive. We are now in a recovery mode."

The campground host called 911 about 3 a.m. Sunday, July 25. When search crews arrived, campers had already begun searching for the child. The "Hasty Team" was brought in first to begin combing the campground.

Sheriff Waugh said, "A 2-year-old has no survival skills. When they are hungry, they cry. When their diaper is dirty, they cry. It's a rugged area and we thought we would hear him crying for those needs. That did not happen."

The family has been cooperative during interviews, Waugh said, but officials have yet to complete analyzing polygraph interviews. Christina Priem is adopting the child. She was with her mother, and three other children.

Boelts would not identify specific persons of interest: "We have not ruled anyone in or out."

The Sheriff's Office has canvassed sex offenders in the Verde Valley and combed through 200 tons of garbage taken from the campground at the Grey Wolf landfill.

There still are video camera films to examine from surrounding stores and businesses.

Behavior analysts from Utah and experts from the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children have advised detectives on a child's movements, which would have been limited to less than a mile radius around the camp.

Boelts said the agency has received numerous tips. "We have the usual psychic tips. We have had tips from the National Center, that I would rather not go into. We have also had tips reference Internet activity."

The Child Abduction Rapid Deployment Team with manpower from Boston, San Francisco, New Jersey and Phoenix have assisted in the search. Horses were brought from Coconino County. Search crews had access to sonar equipment from Pima County. They checked water pools, used cameras in wells and even checked vault toilets.

Newnum said to date, 380 search personnel have invested 4,109 hours over the past eight days and searched 8.5 square miles, working with lines of 15 people one arm length apart. If there were clues, "we would not have missed them," he said.

"It's heartbreaking," Sgt. Newnum said. Many of the searchers have children as well. "We fell in love with Sylar even though we never met him.

"I have four kids at home and you go home and hug your kids. Nobody wanted to stop."

Even so, the search and the investigation continued as reporters were briefed. The campground has now reopened, with posters everywhere asking visitors to help find the missing 2-year-old from Flagstaff.

I know... now. lol I am such a wank. I posted it because when I did the search I spelled the name wrong and it didn't show up.... the post that was posted early yesterday only had his first name (spelled correctly though). So I posted it too. ugh.

Anyway, I was up half the night thinking about these two little guys. The amount of helplessness and deep emotional pain that a parent would be under if their child was missing would be unbearable. I often wonder how people deal with being functional in any capacity under this type of circumstance.

I hope to God these babies are found. I am not feeling that Syler has much of a chance... and it has already been quite a long time for Emmett. :(
