The suspect, a 19-year-old Kalamazoo man, was arrested near the scene and faces aggravated assault charges.
The Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety received a 911 call at 8:30 p.m. Thursday regarding the assault near Lawrence Street and N. Westnedge Avenue. Officers arrived and found the victim from Kalamazoo with injuries to his head and face. He was taken to Bronson Hospital.
The investigation revealed the victim was in an earlier altercation with a juvenile. A relative of the juvenile -- the 19-year-old suspect -- then confronted the victim and hit him in the head with the gas can, police say. The victim was knocked to the ground and then punched multiple times in the head and face, police said in a news release.
