Deadly fire investigated as murder-suicide - boy, 14, may have cut 3 siblings' throat

The fire that killed a Staten Island mother and her four children is now being investigated as a possible murder-suicide - and detectives believe a 14-year-old boy may be the culprit, police sources said Thursday.

Investigators believe troubled C.J. Jones slashed the throats of at least two of his younger siblings, sliced his own throat and set fire to his family's apartment

C.J. was found in the back bedroom of the modest Port Richmond apartment, a straight-edge razor lodged under his body, the sources said.
Though flames ravaged the home and badly burned the corpses inside, two of C.J.'s siblings - Brittany, 10, and Melony, 7 - also had their throats cut, the sources said.

The dead girls were found in the charred living room near their brother, 2-year-old Jermaine, and the body of the children's mother, Leisha Jones.

Cops believe C.J. Jones, 14, (top left) slashed the throats of his siblings Brittany, 9, Jermaine, 2, and Melanie, 7, in a murder-suicide.

Jermaine died at a nearby hospital. It could not immediately be determined what killed him or Leisha Jones, 33.

The three-alarm blaze tore through the second-floor Nicholas Ave. home at 4:15 a.m. and firefighters fought through a wall of flame to find the bodies, officials said.

Investigators now believe the fire was set just inside the front door, possibly to prevent rescuers from entering the home, sources said.

Witnesses told investigators that C.J. was spotted setting pieces of paper ablaze outside the family's Nichols Ave. home Wednesday night as his siblings rode bicycles and drank apple juice.

The teen - who was suspended from Intermediate School 72 this spring - had also been ejected from nearby Faber Pool hours earlier for setting a fire, the sources said.

It was not immediately clear how the fire was set, officials said.

Before learning he was the leading suspect in the fatal fire, neighbors raved at how C.J. took care of his younger siblings.

"[He was] the man of the house," said friend Chandra Franklin, 29. "He took care of his sisters like a dad."

"He never let anything bad happen to them," said Franklin, 29. "He made his mom laugh so hard. He looked out for her."

No one else in the building was injured.

The apartment did not have a smoke detector, which is mandated by law, according to officials.

The device is required to be provided by the building's landlord. The landlord at the Nicholas Ave. building, Albert Morcos, is on vacation in Egypt, according to residents.

Stunned by the tragic deaths, relatives and friends mourned Leisa Jones, 33, who they applauded as a model mother.

"My family, my family!" wailed Martha Anderson, Leisha Jones' mother, when reached at her Washington, D.C., home.

Autopsies complete in NY fire investigation
NEW YORK (AP) - An autopsy has failed to reveal the cause of death for a teenager suspected of killing his mother and siblings and setting the family's Staten Island home on fire.
    [...]
She says the examination was inconclusive as to the cause of death for 14-year-old suspect and his mother.

It confirmed that two young girls found with slit throats died of neck wounds.

The bodies of Leisa Jones and 3 of her children were found in their torched apartment early Thursday. Her 2-year-old son was pulled out alive but died later at the hospital.

An earlier autopsy confirmed that the toddler died of smoke inhalation and burns.

Could it be possible that someone else actually killed the entire family and set it up to look like a murder-suicide? I wonder, especially since the boy was described as the "man of the house". I wonder if mom perhaps had a scorned lover who came in and did all this? I hope she did, I don't like knowing that a 14 year old could do such a thing.

Charred note found at fatal fire scene

NEW YORK — A badly charred note with the words "am sorry" was discovered Friday in the torched apartment where investigators suspect a teenager killed his mother and siblings before committing suicide, police said.

New York Police Department spokesman Paul Browne said the note — with only fragments of words and sentences still legible — was found along with a melted butane lighter in the Staten Island home. It was being analyzed to try to determine who wrote it and if it had any significance

The teenage boy recently had been seen setting a fire at a public pool, and neighbors described him lighting paper on fire in front his apartment building in recent days, police said.

Neighbor Raquel Fagone said she spotted the teenager lighting scraps of paper in front of the building a few months ago.

"I told him not to do that, and he put them out," Fagone said.

Then, early Thursday, she heard a commotion in the family's apartment, directly above hers.

"It sounded like a little child running, upset, in distress, upset, screaming, running around," she said. "I heard a bang and a kind of kaboom."

    Trying to Fathom the Unfathomable
For who knows how long, C. J. Jones had been sending out flares.
In front of his home and at a Staten Island pool, he had apparently been lighting fires, flashes of heat and light that spoke, it turned out, of something more than just a fascination with flames. Inside, he burned.

The heat of that rage consumed the 14-year-old boy and left in its place, it would seem, an all-too-mature murderer. Early Thursday morning, so early all should have been still, he used a razor to slash the throats of his two younger sisters, Brittney Jones, 10, and Melonie Jones, 7, investigators said. Before he slit his own throat, they said, he set the fire that would take them all: the girls; C. J.; his brother, Jermaine Sinclair, 2; and his mother, Leisa Jones, 30.

Before the mind can try to grasp why, it stops at how. Were his younger siblings, the same ones he shuttled back and forth to school or day care, sleeping so soundly they made his work with the blade easier? Had he thought so far ahead that he intentionally set the fire near the door, as The Staten Island Advance reported, to ensure no one escaped? How could someone so young be so skilled in what criminologists call “family annihilation”?

Familicide — they also call it that — is common enough that a profile exists for those who commit it: usually white, a bread-winner, older. “It’s typically a husband or father who has suffered some major stress,” said Jack Levin, a sociologist and criminologist at Northeastern University. “He has lost his job and is deeply in debt or lost money in the market, and he thinks he’s protecting his family from suffering. Or he’s in the throes of a nasty divorce and decides to get even with his wife by taking what she loves most, which is the children.” In the few cases where it is a child, he said, the child is usually at least 16.
For the young adolescent who destroys himself and the family that surrounds him, no such profile exists; the numbers are too small for there to be anything typical. (Paul Mones, a children’s rights lawyer who has worked on hundreds of cases involving intrafamilial homicide, said he had seen only a few involving siblings killing siblings.) We can take comfort in such numbers, although small numbers are also discomfiting: With no profile, there is no way to predict when another comparable tragedy might occur. Who is the troubled fire-setter who will go on to other petty crimes, and who is the troubled fire-setter who will go on to commit a massacre?

Even if the experts cannot predict, they usually can explain. “The statistics would suggest there was probably family discord, disorganization, chaos — strife between family members and within this boy,” said Bradley Peterson, chief of the division of child and adolescent psychiatry at Columbia.
The neighbors saw mostly a happy, well-adjusted family; but then many also saw, in C. J., a loyal helper to his mother, a responsible young man who regularly ran his younger siblings to the pool and park. There was clearly more to C. J. than they could see, or even imagine in their darkest nightmares; the family’s life may prove equally surprising, and similarly troubling.

At a minimum, there was tremendous financial tension: one near-eviction after another. And this week had been a tough one for C. J.: On Monday, he was suspended from school.

“You’re the man of the house,” a family friend reminded him, suggesting that he behave accordingly.

It’s the rare 14-year-old who is up to that untimely challenge. For C. J., whose psychological problems had recently been noted by school officials, that challenge would seem even more overwhelming, especially given the family’s crumbling finances.
    [...]
Ideally, even though the boy died with the crime, the police should conduct a psychological autopsy to shed light for mental health researchers, said J. Reid Meloy, an expert in forensic psychology and a clinical professor of psychiatry at the University of California at San Diego. That would mean talking to loved ones, friends and teachers about the events leading up to that grim Thursday morning.

Maybe C. J. confided his plans or his problems at home, if he had any, to someone else. But in a family considered private, those secrets may have burned along with those who held them close, leaving the rest of us to wonder in the dark.

Police: Mother apparently wrote note in fire
STATEN ISLAND (WABC) -- Police believe a mother who died in a suspected murder-suicide and arson in her home penned a badly charred, fragmented note with the words "am sorry."
New York Police Department spokesman Paul Browne said Sunday that the note's handwriting matched a diary also found in the Staten Island apartment. He says police believe both were written by Leisa Jones.

Investigators have described Jones' 14-year-old son as a suspect because he had a history of playing with fire. But they haven't ruled out his mother.

The bodies of Jones, her son and two young daughters - their throats slit - were found dead early Thursday during a fire at the home. The son had a razor under his body.

The father of the 14-year-old Staten Island boy suspected of killing his family in a gruesome murder-suicide blamed the mother for the crime - and new evidence could prove his allegations, sources said.

Undigested pills found inside the boy's stomach and handwriting from the charred "am sorry" note discovered Friday could point to the mother of the slain family, sources said.
    [...]

"If anybody set fire to that house and killed those children, it's their mother," said the teen's father Earlston Raymond, 39, from his home outside Kingston, Jamaica. "She's got a high temper."

And investigators haven't ruled out that possibility.

A source said detectives are waiting for toxicology results on the pills found in the troubled teen's stomach "to see if mom doped any of the kids to make it easier for her to slit their throats."
    [...]

Because there is so little to the note, detectives can't say for sure that the mother penned the letter, the sources said.

Still, investigators don't believe the teen's infatuation with fire is enough to explain the brutal mass murder, another source said.

"Cutting people's throats is usually something a psychotic grows into," the source said. "And so far no one has reported he tortured animals or other kids or his brothers and sisters - so it's a puzzle."

Family members disputed claims that the mother of four killed her children and set the house ablaze.

"My sister is not a murderer," said Sharon Scott, 29. "Those kids were her life."
    [...]

The cause of the blaze is still under investigation, but fire marshals found a metal butane lighter - to which the supposed confession note was fused - near the bodies of the mother and three of her children.

Detectives were also still examining the burned remnants of the family computer to see if anyone wrote any alleged plans in an e-mail or online.

PORT RICHMOND, N.Y. (WPIX) - Investigators initially thought a 14-year-old slashed his siblings' throats and set his house on fire, killing the family of five. But they are now shifting the focus of the case and believe the late mother may be responsible for the fatal tragedy on Staten Island.

Cops originally thought C.J. Romoy, 14, killed his siblings, torched the house on fire and committed suicide. He was found with a razorblade underneath his body and had a history of behaviorial problems and setting fires.

But autopsy reports state that C.J. Romoy and his sisters -- 10-year-old Brittney and 7-year-old Melonie -- were already dead before the fire was set and did not die from smoke inhalation. All three kids were found with their throats slashed.

Reports say Leisha Jones, 32, wrote the badly charred signed note with the words "am sorry," which was found in the house on Nicholas Avenue in Port Richmond. They believe she may be the one who committed the murder-suicide and arson that killed herself and her four children on Thursday.

"We believe both the note and the diary were written by the mother," NYPD spokesperson Paul J. Browne stated in an e-mail.

Jones and her 2-year-old Jermaine Sinclair died of smoke inhalation, according to autopsy reports. Young Jermaine Sinclair, who was found near the front door, was rescued from the blaze but died at Richmond University Medical Center in West Brighton.

The autopsy report also showed that Jones and her 14-year-old son had undigested pills in their stomachs, suggesting she may have tried to commit suicide or she may have needed to drug her son before killing him.

The New York Post reported Monday that, months ago, Jones told a female friend she had contemplated killing her children and setting her 2 1/2-story house ablaze.

According to the Post, C.J. Romoy's father Earlston Raymond, who lives in Jamaica, told their mutual friend: "At times, I feel like killing the kids and burning the house down and killing myself." He alleges he did not learn of this threat until after Thursday's tragedy.

Neighbors steadfastly dismissed the allegations against the 14-year-old and described him as being "the most loving person in the world" who helped care for his younger siblings.

After being evicted from her Washington, D.C. apartment, Jones moved her family to Port Richmond. But she had difficulty paying her rent and, in 2007, was sued by her landlord for $7,000 in back rent.

Jones was a single mother with children sired by different fathers. She was working part-time as a security guard in the Macy's at Staten Island Mall to make ends meet.

After slitting the throats of her three oldest kids and setting fire to her home, Staten Island mom Leisa Jones may have tried to save herself and her toddler at the last minute.

That's the latest scenario investigators are eying in last week's horrific murder-suicide that wiped out the family, sources told the Daily News Monday.

The theory is fueled by the fact that Jones, 30, and son Jermaine, 2, were found near the door with the mother "sort of on all fours, like she was trying to crawl out," one source said.

The toddler died of smoke inhalation, an autopsy found.

Pills were found in Jones' stomach, but the cause of her death has not been determined.

Sources say soot was found in her lungs, meaning she was alive when the blaze started.

There was no soot in the lungs of her 14-year-old son, C.J. - who was initially believed to be the killer - suggesting he was dead when the inferno was set.
    [...]

C.J.'s father has said from his home in Jamaica that friends told him the mother talked about harming the kids and burning the house down.
    [...]

The NYPD hasn't officially declared Jones to be the killer and is waiting for the results of toxicology tests before making a final determination.

    the agony here.
As awful as this story is, I am somewhat relieved to learn that the 14 yr old boy did not in fact do this. that would have caused nightmares on my part, just replaying the story over and over trying to piece togther why he would do such a thing. As for the mother... jiminy christmas. I wonder if her diary would have had more detail as to why she could have done this to her own flesh and blood! Did the diary get smoked too, like completley unreadable??

And as far as finances go, bs. If she truley cared for those kids, she could have given them a decent chance at life and sent them to relatives for a stable environment. You don't just light them up and god for sake, slit their throats because you're having a rough time. So fucking selfish.

Mother's death in NYC fire is ruled a suicide

The New York City medical examiner has ruled that the death of a mother who died in a fire with her four children on Staten Island was a suicide.

Spokesman Ellen Borakove said Thursday that autopsy results show that Leisa Jones died from smoke inhalation. She says that Jones' 14-year-old son, C.J., died from a wound to the neck and his death was ruled a homicide.

Investigators had initially described C.J. as a suspect because he had a history of playing with fire.

Jones' three other children also died in the blaze. Two had their throats cut, and one later died from smoke inhalation at a hospital. C.J. had a razor under his body.

How does a mother murder her kids?

The suicide and killings that left Leisa Jones and her four children dead on the morning of July 22 were likely acts of severe depression and desperation, but psychiatric research suggests that in the mother's own mind, likely warped by mental illness, the murders were acts of love.

The logic is twisted but consistent in such cases, says Dr. Donna Cohen, a professor at the University of South Florida and a leading expert on murder-suicides:

"The person with a mental illness has an intense attachment to the victims and in most cases feels threatened that their relationship is about to change. The motivation is that nobody else can take care of them: 'I'm responsible, and I would rather we'd be dead than not be able to control things,'" she said, surmising, based on the thousands of cases she has studied: "I'd say this mother was feeling unable to provide for them. ... I think she saw herself as a good mother who would rather see her kids' death than to see their world fall apart and not be able to take care of them. That's love, for her."

We know that Leisa Jones was overwhelmed. The mother of four, who was attending beauty school in St. George, had last worked in January at Macy's in the Staten Island Mall, where she was hired on as a holiday-season security guard. She had been indebted to her landlord in Port Richmond and had been evicted for non-payment in 2008 from her home in Washington, D.C., where she was, for a brief period, and unbeknownst to her blood relatives, homeless.

Roughly 2,000 Americans a year are killed in murder-suicides. The perpetrator is usually a man; 70 percent of murder-suicides involve couples, and 6 percent involve infants and children, according to data from the Violence and Injury Prevention Program at the University of South Florida.

From various descriptions of Ms. Jones emerges a picture of a mother who was devoted and exacting, yet also harsh and hot-tempered.
    [...]

Authorities at Laurie Intermediate School, where C.J. was enrolled, had been concerned about his family life; social workers there had observed Ms. Jones being "verbally or emotionally abusive" toward him, said a school official who requested anonymity.

But friends, neighbors, and other relatives also describe Ms. Jones as doting.

She demanded polite manners from her children and kept them neatly dressed, according to several accounts.

    Innocence.

The word that arises almost inevitably when children are victimized by crime is doubly poignant when lives are cut short. As the murders unfolded, the Jones children were presumably asleep.
    [...]

The night before the early morning slayings, a neighbor said that C.J. had combed his hair and his brother's before bedtime. The children presumably went to sleep happy: They'd be going to Coney Island the next day, their mother had told them.

Murder-suicides involve distorted thinking, researchers say. But, Dr. Cohen says, they are never "senseless" acts:

"A person who commits suicide after murder feels completely helpless and hopeless and has made the decision to die," according to Dr. Cohen. "The murder-suicide is intentional and well planned, often weeks, months, and sometimes years before it occurs. There is usually a trigger, a straw that breaks the camel's back, but most likely she was vacillating between die/live, die/live. To us this is really horrific. In her mind, this was totally rational."

"People who commit familicides aren't malicious criminals," said Dr. Cohen, "they are people who see this as a way out. Leisa probably really, really loved those kids."

This case is sad on so many levels....the worst being that the media rushed to judgement and basically had C.J. pegged as a psycho kid who brutally murdered his family...whoops,turns out he was innocent.
I imagine that is the only solace his father has at this point..
