1 Year-Old's Death Suspicious in Newport News

NEWPORT NEWS — Police say the 1-year-old boy who was found dead Tuesday at his home had visible signs of trauma on his body.

Medical examiners are trying to determine how the boy died. An autopsy was being conducted Wednesday as police continue to investigate the boy's "suspicious" death while in the care of his mother's boyfriend.

Authorities received a call at 4:34 p.m. about an unresponsive child at Aqua Vista apartments. The boy, who was found in a bedroom, was pronounced dead shortly after police arrived, according to Holly McPherson, a spokeswoman for Newport News Police Department. The boy's 5-year-old sister was also in the apartment but unharmed. McPherson said the mother of the children was at work Tuesday and her boyfriend was caring for them. The apartment complex is located in the Southeast Community behind King-Lincoln Park.

The woman's boyfriend, who has not been charged in the boy's death, was questioned by police Tuesday evening.

Calvin Sneed says he was passing out fliers Tuesday around 9 a.m. when he saw the woman's boyfriend with the boy.

"The kid was running behind him. He was like, 'This kid is so [expletive] spoiled. I told you to come on.'" Sneed said the tiny boy struggled to keep up. The boy was barefoot and only wearing a diaper, Sneed said.

Later that day Sneed heard a little boy was dead. Sneed says he realized it was the same boy from earlier when he saw police questioning the boy's caretaker from that morning.

"When I saw the man sitting on the steps I said, 'I know that boy.'"

Police are still investigating how the boy died and how long he had been dead when they responded.

About 100 people Tuesday evening stood on doorsteps, in stairwells and on sidewalks watching police detectives go in and out of building 668.

"It's really sad to know that a little kid died out here," said resident Karen Brown-Harris. "A little baby that doesn't even know what life is all about."

Carmen Craighead, who says she is a friend of the mother, said the child, as well as his 5-year-old sister, usually attended daycare with her two sons. Craighead said a daycare worker told her that the children had not been coming lately. The last time they had seen the boy, he had bruises.

Carmen Craighead, who says she is a friend of the mother, said the two children usually attend daycare with her two sons. Craighead said a daycare worker told her that the children had not been there lately. The last time they saw the boy, he had bruises.

"She told me that the boy had bruises on his face," said Craighead, who heard about the boy's death when she came home Wednesday. "When I heard what happened, it brought me to tears. I can't imagine if I lost any one of my boys."

Police are still trying to determine how long the boy had been dead when they responded. A neighbor said he saw the child walking with the woman's boyfriend at 9 a.m. and he was barefoot and only wearing a daiper.

A family friend, who declined to give her name Wednesday, said she saw the boy last week and he had bruises on both cheeks. She said when she asked about the bruises she was told that he was hurt while playing.](I'll bet it was the Boyfriend playing "whackababy")
"This is really sad. I think parents need to supervise their children more," said Sararita Delgado, a neighbor who has four children. "I just don't let anyone watch my children — I refuse to."

Neighbor Leah Dews said she saw the woman and her two children three weeks ago. They had just come from washing clothes. Dews says the woman was excited about being a few months pregnant with a baby boy. Lovely.. stupid breeders..

Aw, Geez! Why wouldn't he take the baby to the daycare? Was this a cost cutting measure? One year olds are not fast walkers unless they see something that motivates their interest. Hell, they don't speed up for years. You have to have patience when walking with little children. Not something I see a lot of adults do anymore. It's all strollers, baby carriers, carts etc. Where was this taking place? And, for Christ's sake, what happened to the boy? Was he hit by a car? Shaken and abused? Kill the guy!

The mother had 2 children already. She knows what normal bruising from playing looks like and what is abnormal. Such as bruising on the cheeks. WTF kind of playing causes that? I'll tell you what. Squeezing the kids cheeks while yelling in his face. That kind.

She is also prego. That makes her more likely to look the other way. I bet she knew he was being "rough" with the baby but didn't think he would die. I guess she shouldn't have chanced it huh?
