SPOKANE, Wash. - A 17-year-old Spokane Valley boy awoke early Sunday to a man slashing his neck with a knife. He survived the assault, but afterward found his mother dead on the floor of their kitchen.

Police are now looking for the suspect, 39-year-old Jan R. Demeerleer, a former boyfriend or ex-husband of the deceased woman.

Demeerleer may be driving a silver 2005 Saab with Washington license plates ABA0658. His whereabouts are unknown and police are asking the public's help to locate him.

Police responded to the victims' home in the 600 block of North Ella Road after the 17-year-old call 911 at 2:49 a.m. Sunday. The hysterical teen told the operator that his stepdad had attempted to cut his throat and had killed him mom

Officers arrived and learned that one of the woman's twin nine-year-old boys had suffered a severe head injury in the attack. A second twin was uninjured.

Both the teen and his younger brother were taken to a downtown hospital for treatment. Detectives at 9:30 a.m. said their conditions were unknown, but the younger boy was on life support.

SPOKANE VALLEY -- Police believe the suspect in a deadly Sunday morning attack in the Spokane Valley has been found dead at his home.

Detectives believe the body they discovered inside a garage in the 8300 block of E. Briant Lane Sunday evening is that of 39-year-old Jan R. DeMeerleer.

The discovery effectively put an end to the manhunt for DeMeerleer, who was suspected of killing his fiance and one of her sons, while severely injuring another early Sunday morning.

Dispatchers received a frantic call at about 2:49 a.m. from the woman's 17-year-old son who said he woke up to DeMeerleer slashing his throat.

When officers arrived at the home in the 600 block of N. Ella, they found the injured teen who said DeMeerleer shot and killed his mother and shot one of his 9-year-old twin brothers in the back of the head.

Medics rushed the 9-year-old to a downtown hospital where he was placed on life support. Hospital staff pronounced the young boy brain dead at about 5:45 Sunday evening. Detectives say the other twin brother was not injured during the attack.

Spokane Valley Police say a woman and her 9-year-old son were killed in an early Morning attack Sunday morning. KXLY4's Tori Brunetti has more from the murder scene.

Detectives discovered the body inside the home at about 5:00 p.m., they said they had no reason to believe it wasn't DeMeerleer.

Roads were closed off around both the N. Ella address and DeMeerleer's home late Sunday evening as investigators processed evidence at both crime scenes.

Investigators say DeMeerleer and the female victim were engaged to be married and had lived together for a short time at his home on E. Briant Lane.

Friends and neighbors told KXLY that the victim is Rebecca Schiering, owner of the Reclothery, a consignment store in Downtown Spokane.

A close family friend said that Schiering moved out of DeMeerleer's home and into the home on N. Ella about 6 months ago because DeMeerleer was abusive to one of her 9-year-old twin sons.

I'm glad this POS is dead but I also wish he wasn't. I would liked to have known that he went through some type of hell before dying, some kind of suffering. Now the other twin and 17 year old are without a mom and brother because some asshole couldn't get his feelings in check. Sad.

The neighbors and a friend said that Schiering moved out after one of the twin boys, who was autistic, was injured by DeMeerleer in a domestic violence incident.

Sheriff’s Sgt. Dave Reagan, spokesman for both the sheriff’s office and Spokane Valley police, said DeMeerleer reportedly suffered from bi-polar mental disorder, according to interviews of people who knew him.

So this bastard got violent with her son. Shiering was a real mom so she kicks him out. He doesn't like the fact he's now out of her life and has a potential new man. What a selfish fuck to take it in his hands to destroy her life because HE was an asshole.

Oh, man I hate these stories. Poor children devastated, lives shattered! I am very glad to read the 17 yo made it as his 9 yo brother will need him desperately. I also read somewhere, must find article, that he leaves behind a 9 yo daughter.

SPOKANE VALLEY -- Spokane County Sheriff's deputies say the boy shot in the head Sunday in a gruesome murder-suicide has been taken off life support.
Investigators say the boy, 9, was shot in the head by Jan R. Demeerleer, 39, his step-father.
Police say Demeerleer also killed the boy's mother and slashed his 17-year-old brother's throat in the same attack early Sunday morning. After a massive search for Demeerleer, he was found later that day on the floor or his garage, dead of an apparent gunshot wound.
A 911 call came in at 2:49 a.m. Sunday from 600 N. Ella in Spokane Valley from the teen whose throat was slashed. He told operators he woke up to his step-dad slashing his throat and found his mother dead in the kitchen. Investigators say when officers arrived, they learned the suspect had also shot the teen's 9-year-old brother in the head, but the 9-year old's twin brother was not hurt.
At about 5:45 p.m. Sunday, the boy was pronounced brain dead. He was taken off life support and died of his injuries Monday morning.
After finding the crime scene, officers launched a manhunt for Demeerleer, effectively using the 911 callback program to inform Demeerleer's neighbors about his appearance, what car he might be driving, and the potential danger in their neighborhood. SWAT set up around his Northwoods home in the 8300 block of East Briant.
Autopsies for both Demeerleer and the female victim are scheduled for Monday to determine the official causes of death.
During the investigation, detectives learned that the suspect and the female victim were engaged to be married. They had live together for a period in the Northwoods home.
