Ronald & Laura Jewell Accused Of Torturing 8yo Granddaughter,Almost Taking A Ear

LOUISA COUNTY - 412 Lakeview Circle in Louisa County. What happened inside of this home? That's what investigators are trying to figure out.
According to an arrest warrant obtained by CBS 6, it's a story of alleged cruelty and torture against an eight-year-old child. She's the granddaughter of the two suspects, Laura and Ronald Jewell.
The two were indicted Monday morning by a Louisa County grand jury and are facing serious charges. Prosecutor Rusty McGuire says the grandmother is facing the most, three felony counts.
"First felony child neglect, cruelty and malicious wounding. Mr. Jewell was also indicted by the same grand jury for felony child neglect and the same cruelty charge," McGuire tells CBS 6.

The girl suffered serious bruising on her body, a foot injury and injuries to her ears. One of her ears was partially torn off, according to one Louisa investigator.
Leaving court on Monday morning Laura Jewell shuffled out of court in handcuffs and hid her face from our cameras as she was led to a waiting police car. A similar scene from Ronald Jewell who had to be guided by a deputy because he buried his face in his jail uniform and was unable to see to walk to the car.

A grand jury indicted a Louisa County couple yesterday on felony charges in the alleged torture of their 8-year-old granddaughter.
Laura Jewell, 49, and her husband, Ronald Jewell, 48, were indicted on one count each of torture and felony child abuse. Laura Jewell faces an additional charge of malicious wounding.
A neighbor called 911 on Thursday shortly before 3 a.m. after the child left the home she shared with her grandparents, arrived at the neighbor's home, and reported that she had been abused, Louisa sheriff's Maj. Donald A. Lowe said.
"She had bruises all over her," Lowe said. "Her ear had been partially torn. She had blood on her."
The girl had bruises on her head, arms and legs, Lowe said. One of her feet was broken, and some of her hair had been pulled out.

"It just looked like a lot of beatings," Lowe said. "It might have been ongoing."

"This was especially shocking, what we saw," Lowe said. "And actually pretty heartbreaking to have a child go through that -- to have to sneak out of the house and have to report it to somebody."

He said the girl had been living with her grandparents and some siblings in Blue Ridge Shores, which Lowe described as a gated community on Lake Louisa.
"The parents appear to be absent from the children's lives right now," he said.
Lowe said none of the other children appeared to be hurt. They were released to social-services officials.

Ronald Jewell's attorney, John R. Maus, said yesterday that his client became distraught during a court hearing last week.
"When he saw the pictures of the child at his bond hearing, he broke down in tears and told the judge he had no idea that was going on," Maus said.
Maus said Ronald Jewell had been working in the Washington area installing or maintaining sprinkler systems. He would work nights and sleep during the day, Maus said.
Messages left for Laura Jewell's attorney were not returned yesterday. She faces up to 35 years in prison if convicted on all charges. Her husband faces up to 15 years.

Laura Jewell this morning entered an Alford plea to charges of felony child neglect and malicious wounding in connection with the abuse of her 8-year-old granddaughter in Louisa County.

As part of a plea, in which Jewell did not admit guilt but acknowledged authorities likely had enough evidence to convict her, prosecutors withdrew a charge of torture of a child.

Sentencing was set for Feb. 23 in Louisa County Circuit Court.

Authorities say the girl suffered a broken bone in her foot and extensive bruising and that her ears had been pulled, leaving open, bloody wounds.

Louisa Commonwealth's Attorney Thomas A. Garrett Jr. said a cooking pan was hung on the door to the girl's bedroom and served as an alarm that would sound when she stepped outside the room.

Defense attorney John R. Amos told Judge Timothy Sanner that despite what is shown in pictures of the girl's injuries, Laura Jewell is a loving grandmother and maintains her innocence.

He also said it is possible the girl broke a bone in her foot jumping from a balcony when she left the house.

He said his client was trying to discipline as best she knew how.

Ronald Jewell is awaiting trial.

Ronald Jewell was convicted Monday of felony child neglect of an 8-year-old girl who authorities say was abused by Jewell’s wife, the child’s grandmother.

Jewell, 48, entered an Alford plea to the charge in Louisa County Circuit Court, meaning he does not admit guilt but acknowledges that prosecutors had enough evidence to convict him.

Under a plea agreement, prosecutors withdrew a child-torture charge against him. Jewell, who has been jailed since July, essentially was sentenced Monday to time already served, said Deputy Commonwealth’s Attorney Rusty McGuire.

“We are pleased with the outcome,” McGuire said. “There was little evidence to show Mr. Jewell’s involvement in the crime. This agreement ensures he will not have any more contact with the victim or her siblings until they reach 18.”

A Louisa County woman was sentenced Wednesday to serve seven years in prison for severely abusing her 8-year-old granddaughter.

Laura Jewell, 49, was sentenced in Louisa Circuit Court to 30 years in prison, with 23 of those years suspended, on charges of malicious wounding and felony child abuse and neglect. In November, Jewell entered an Alford plea to those charges, meaning she did not admit guilt but acknowledged that authorities had enough evidence to convict her.

The victim fled the home on July 8, banged on a neighbor's door about 3 a.m. and told the neighbor she was being beaten, authorities said. She said her grandmother had stomped on her foot, pulled her hair and hurled vulgar insults at her. She was wearing a soiled pull-up diaper and had not bathed in days.

Laura Jewell admitted to authorities that she would discipline the girl but denied abusing her, saying that the child would wet her bed and sometimes did not respond to punishment. A cooking pan was hung on the door to the girl's bedroom and served as an alarm that would sound when she stepped outside the room, authorities said.

OMG! Judges sleeping at the bench again!

OF COURSE the child was wetting her bed when "Granny" hung a pan on the door to alert her when the kid got up to pee. She probably came running with an ass whipping at that time as well.

I hope the ugly bitch gets her ass a hell of a good beat down in the big house.

With enough evidence why would they plea deal and suspend sentence.....WTF Grandmothers seemingly have the balls to torture, where are the balls of our DAs to prosecute? This is fucking bullshit! The only hope I get from this story is that an 8 year old was strong enough to help herself, I believe she has the will and strength to live and survive...
