A woman was arrested after a neighbour allegedly saw her drown her newborn baby in a bucket of water in Ivory Park, east of Johannesburg on Wednesday, Ekurhuleni police said.
The 26-year-old woman's neighbour was woken by a baby's cry on Wednesday at about 4am, Constable Neldah Hlase said.
When she went outside to investigate, she saw a woman carrying a bucket full of water with a baby already dead inside.
The baby's head was facing down inside the bucket.
She called the police and the woman was sent to the Tembisa hospital under police guard.
She would face a charge of murder on her release from the hospital. - Sapa
