JERSEY CITY, N.J. (AP) ― Jersey City police say a Newark man threw gasoline at his ex-girlfriend's new beau and the man's 9-year-old son, then tried to set the man on fire.
Thirty-nine-year-old Tracy Ferguson faces attempted murder charges.
The boy suffered chemical burns on his scalp and was being treated at the Jersey City Medical Center. The father wasn't hurt.
Police Chief Tom Comey said the victim was taking his son to school around 8:30 a.m. Friday when Ferguson jumped out from between parked cars and threw a large soft drink cup full of gasoline on them. He then took out a flare and tried unsuccessfully to ignite it.
Ferguson ran off and was soon arrested. He's being held by police pending a court appearance and has not yet retained a lawyer.
